Anyone familiar with the San Francisco area?

I'm taking a 2 week trip traveling across a couple of states then ending up in San Francisco at the end for a couple of days before heading home to San Diego. The problem is I'll have Hunter with me, which is fine for the entire trip except San Francisco. I'll have to board him for 2 days while there, but I don't know anything about boarding facilities in that area, so I was hoping maybe someone here might be able to recommend a good one. I'll be staying near the Fishermans wharf area. I'm still hoping to find a hotel that accepts pets in that area, but the ones I've found only take small dogs. Somehow I don't think 70 lbs qualifies...any help would be appreciated.

I took a peek at dogfriendly.com and found these hotels listed. Perhaps you could see if there is a weight limit at these hotels:

I was in San Fran for a work conference back in May and wolflady and RedHedd were a joy to meet and a huge help in getting to know the city. :D

Don't let the "Small or 30-40# limits" scare you away!

CALL the hotel/motel directly (NOT the central reservation number)
and just ask if they'll allow a "WELL BEHAVED 'larger' dog" ...

I've even managed to get THREE Dawgs into a "NO pets" motel
with a friendly phone call in advance!

Often helps to say you'll accept a "smoking room"
on the ground floor.
Unless they are booked up; most places will bend their
published 'rules' to sell the room.

Thanks everyone! Dogfriendly.com that wolflady suggested helped me at least find hotels that accepted pets, but most had restrictions or fees listed on their sites. Phred I took your advice and contacted a hotel directly, and it turns out they don't have a problem if you can crate them and thanks to a mixup in the reservations I can actually afford the room! :D Thanks again!

Are you considering using the hotel/motel as a "boarding facility" for Hunter to
"stay in" while you go somewhere?

Leaving a dog "ALONE" in a hotel/motel room is usually NOT permitted!
LOTS of reasons to not do it ...
* Fido hears "noises" and often starts *barking*
* Housekeeping might come in - *scaring* everybody!
* Most hotels/motels specify you can't leave pets alone in the room!

If you're going somewhere where Hunter CAN'T go - you will need to find a
"dawg-sitter" to watch over him!

Consider:
* Doggie DAY Care facility - most run from morning till 4-5-6 PM
* Find a "pet sittter" who will "sit" in the motel room
* Find a boarding facility nearby
* Find a Friend nearby who would like to have a Doggie Visitor for a day or two

YOU should check references for whomever you decide to use;
and the Service will probably want to see Hunter's VET & SHOT records
before they will "accept" him.

Sorry for the confusion....Originally I was planning to since I didn't think I'd have much luck finding a hotel in downtown San Francisco that allowed pets, especially one his size no matter what his manners/temperment is. :( Since I did, I plan on taking him with us the majority of the time. ;) The only time I could see leaving him is maybe an hour or so for dinner, but I've already checked with the hotel and it's not a problem as long as he's crated and we put a do not disturb sign up for housekeeping. Since this is the end of a 2 week trip I'm guessing I'll have a fairly exhausted pup on my hands by then so an hour in his crate shouldn't be a problem. I've already gotten a copy of his shot records (just in case...), since we'll be going through a few states, and he has a rabies tag on his collar. We don't really have any set plan for while we're in SF but the doggy day care idea sounds good just in case we want to do something for an extended period. I'll do some searches and see if I can find one. He's never been in one, but he's dog and people friendly so I don't think it should be an issue. :)

Last time was an overnighter in Findlay with all THREE of em ...
We had a pizza & Dawg food; and I decided we needed ICE for my pop.
Pizza safely "stored" on top of the garment rack - I told The Gang I'd "be rite back"
and slipped out for the 3 minute round trip to the ice machine 2 floors down ...

Shudda KNOWN the guy I passed in the stairwell was headed to the room across from ours ...
TWO floors down I heard the muffled *WOOF* - *YIPP* - *YAPP* LOUD & CLEAR!
... OMG!!

It wasn't so "muffled" when I got to the door and tried to shut em up before I
opened the dooor!

And Cinder is usually good for one Oh:dark:Thirty Panic Attack when
a motel "neighbor" comes in in the middle of the night or leaves early ...

If you really plan to leave Hunter IN the room "ALONE" - I'd suggest you leave
for a few minutes, then come back and *knock* on the door to determine
just how he'll react.

To be honest his barking was a huge concern last time I took him. He barks at the drop of a hat at home, which we're painfully working on.... :mad: Anyway last time I was traveling alone and needed to run into the store. It was hot so I didn't want to leave him in the car so I figured I'd try crating him in the room. I crated him and went outside for about 10 min. Unfortunately/fortunately the hotel had put us in a high traffic area. Within 10 min people had walked by talking, a couple of cars had driven by the window, our neighbor came out closing the door (not quietly), a dog even barked, and not a peep out of him. :) So I figured I was safe and went to the store. When I pulled back in what do I hear......him howling :o I was horrified. Later I ran into the people next door to us and apologized. They said they actually hadn't heard anything out of him until they heard me come back. :confused: Then I remembered, he always knows the sound of mine or my roomates cars at home and starts howling as soon as he hears them, and I'd parked right outside the room..... He's a little.....ok lot strange ;)
