I have a 1 year old toy poodle mix pup. Before I ask the question, I will tell you a little about her. I got her when she was 7 weeks old, from my best friend. She is potty trained, and knows several commands. She is mostly well behaved, except two things. One, is that whenever she hears a little noise or someone knocks and the door, or something, she starts barking like crazy. She wont stop until she finds out what the noise is. And two, is that if she accidently gets out of the fenced yard she runs and runs and wont listen to me. It is really hard to get her. But in the house and in the fenced yard she follows me EVERYWHERE. how do I fix these problems?

I have the same problem with the doorbell and my dogs, they go mental! So what I have been doing, is asking my neighbours when they are coming in and out of their house, to ring my bell. Then when the dogs get all excited, I just sit calmly and ignore them. Then they start to realize the door bell ring is not such a huge event.

My prob with him isnt really a behavior one. He dont play
Nothing.... once or twice a day i will get him to rough house a little bit and he is hyisterical. But only for a short time. No playing other wise. He does not play with toys or get in the trash or play with the balls . I dont know how to get him to play. Hes very loving and sweet. But no playing..:confused:

Please try the search option and scan through Dog Behavior for the keywords 'doorbell' or 'recall'. I have the same problem with one of my dogs running away when she has gotten loose. The best advice I have is to be very careful not to let her get loose! I know that doesn't say much about how to change the behavior, but it would be terrible if your dog ran into the road and had an accident.

The problem with my dog probably started because she is smart enough to learn that I didn't always follow up when I asked her to do something. In other words, if I asked her to come and she didn't, I would just forget about it. Now, I enforce my commands (if she doesn't come inside when I call, I bring her inside, I also practiced using a 20 ft. leash). Her behavior has improved and she has been listening better. You might try that..hopefully it helps! Good luck

thanks everyone. i will try that. pembroke_corgi, do you know alot about corgis? cuz i might be getting a pup and i cant decide if a corgi is right for me. i have poultry and a cat and i dont want the dog to chase them (or at least hurt them)

Corgis are herding dogs, therefore if they're well-bred they have a very strong herding drive! Corgis are also cattle dogs, so they tend to be hard-mouthed ~ which might not mix well with cats and chickens running around. Any healthy Corgi WILL chase a chicken unless they're restrained, or you have done a heck of a lot of advanced off-leash Obedience with them.

Maybe consider a non-herding dog, if you don't want the herding instinct? My herding pup obsesses over our cat (not to mention anything else that is moving), and I will never be able to trust them alone together ;)... Corgi's are also KNOWN for their readiness to bark at anything and everything ~ and since you're already having problems with one dog barking, I dunno. Corgi's are small, but they demand tons of exercise, training, and attention to be happy... just like any herding breed. Please do lots of research at akc.org and the breed clubs/websites of whichever breeds you are interested in.

my other pup is at my moms house. (the one that barks). my dad is getting a pup cuz he doesn't have any. lol... prolly a good idea to try a different breed.

I agree with bckrazy that a Corgi would not be the best choice if you've got chickens. My corgi grew up with cats and she will still chase them occasionally, but she has learned she's not supposed to. I don't think she would be able to learn that with chickens, though. Plus, maybe your other dog wouldn't appreciate being herded around, either! Luckily my other dog is bigger than my corgi and thinks it is a great game.

If you are thinking about another dog, I've heard that Bichon Frise's are supposed to be very gentle with other kinds of pets. Other than that, I don't know!
