Hi Will, welcome to pet talk. This would be a good question for a vet. I am uncertain if the panleukopenia (sp?) virus can live in the environment or if it needs a live host. You'd be better off knowing the facts before getting new kitties.
Any age cat woiuld be good to adopt, but I personally suggest an adult. First, you can judge its character much more reliably. But more importantly, many very deserving adults go unnoticed and it is sad. And adopt 2 if you can. Each animal deserves to have company of their own species.
I have 2 girls already, but I want the little one to be able to have adopted children, like her mother.
The vet gave 3 answers, and others gave diffrent answers, so when I saw that there was a question about FIP, I thougt Id join and ask
Are the 2 cats you have safe from the panleukopenia? And what were the vet's opinions? (just curious)
Also, I am certain that others here have dealt more with it and can give you an answer better than mine.

From what I understand PanLeuk can survive in the environment for up to a year! (in one piece of cat litter!)
You need to thoroughly disinfect with bleach (20:1)
ALL the areas that your PanLeuk kitty was. : (
If you decide to get another cat, it should be fully innoculated with FVRCP.
I would not get a kitten, their immune systems are not as strong as adults.
If you want to be completely safe though, it's one year.
Four months, is another opinion.

well first the vet said a couple of weeks, then he said 3 months, then 6 months, and alot of vet nurses(thats what they call them in britan) that ive talked to said to get something called A-33 and that gets rid of it right away. Then other people said 8 weeks. And get an older cat, 3 months plus.
My cats are safe from it as they got all their shots and all.
Theyre 4 and 5, and their names are Molly, black and white, and Peaches the mother who is orange.
