Racoon Baby
My friend is raising a baby racoon! Her name is Lucy and she is 7 weeks old! She was abandoned (along with other syblings who are safe in other people) in a garage. Either the momma was shot, run over, or scared!
I am going to try and get pics of her, but I'm not sure if I can!
I got to feed two of her syblings (my mom works with one of the suragant parents) Their names were Emma and Edward! They are SO cute!
Sorry I probably bored you with this, but, I am so excited and happy for Kyrie'! She is such a nice person, but shy!
I have tried to get her involved with PT, but, she is afraid that people won't like her! It's a long story, but, her pets are Muffy and Spencer (Shi Tzu's), Bailey and Lucky (rescue kitties), Maz, Sammy, and Jak (degu littermates) Hubert (a turtle).

If she loves her furkids we will love her!

Raccoons are the #1 animal for carrying rabies. It's best to let a wildlife rescue care for the babies for several reasons. One being the people who work in wildlife rehab all have been vaccinated against rabies. Second reason is they have experience in bringing up babies of all kind and they will have the best chance of surviving there. Please for the safety of your friend and everyone please get the raccoons to a wildlife rescue right away. I know the're cute, but that's no reason to risk your lives.

How cool! My friend used to have a pet raccoon.
But I hope they don't have rabies or anything though, like KBlaix said.

Hey Steph. My friend raised a racoon for about 5 years, they kept trying to relese it, but it always came back.
Tell your friend that she is welcome to join, and I am sure she will fit right in.

Kyrie' all ready has it planned out, and, her parents "all of a sudden" got worried about rabies:( People who have a certified certificate with racoons (I can't remember what they called it) are now raising Lucy..She is SO cute though!--It is for the best that they gave her to this person though. You are right KBlaix!! Rabies is a major problem!
I have told her about Pet Talk and her newest "reason for not wanting to join is that,"My mom will get sooo mad if I join, besides, I'm never online!" Maybe some day I can convince her:rolleyes: Any suggestions on how to encourage her to join?

I had rescued a baby racoon, his name was coony( how original) and he lived to be about 8-9 yrs old. He went on family vacations with us and had the run of the house most of the time. I found him when he was about a week old, under a tree he'd probably fallen out of. We did have him checked by the vet and watched for 2 weeks for rabies and he passed with flying colors. Coony was a very sweet lovable racoon, and was always on my lap.
When we had our cabin out in the country, there wasnt a basement under our bathroom, just a crawl space. I could hear a mother racoon under the floor, and she had babies under there also. There wasnt anyway to get them out of there, so all we could do was wait for them to leave and block fix where she had gotten in. Well I started to notice I didnt hear the mother under there for a couple of days, and the babies were getting upset and loud, because they were starving(I found mama soon after dead on the road, hit by a car). There was a cupboard under the bathroom sink where the pipes went down into the crawl space. Pretty soon there were little baby racoon paws reaching up through the pipe hole(about a half inch around) I knew they were starving and didnt want them to die under there, so I put corn curls and catfood down the hole. And I put the food outside of the hole of the cabin foundation where they had gotten in. This took about 2 weeks but I finally coaxed them out!
It is a sad thing to listen and know an animal is starving or suffering, and when there is no wild life rescue or even a humane society in the area(they WONT help around here if it's not in their county!) You do what you can. It is wise to be careful of rabies with every animal you dont know! I was bitten by a mouse when I was 5 yrs old and the mouse head and I went to the University Hospital for rabies shots, and that was 35 yrs ago when they were given in the stomach! OUCH!!!!

Youch! That would hurt to get all those shots!!!!! Especially at five yrs old!!
That would be hard to listen to babies, or any animal starve to death! Luckily you got them out though! What did you do with them, raise them or give them to someone else? -- Thanks for sharing the stories!

By the time they finally came out from under the house they were probably around 6 or 8 weeks old and had been eating cat food and corncurls and anything else I could think of that they would like. So, once they found their way out, they took off and I never saw them again, and we fixed the foundation so that couldnt happen again!
I have to admit, when they heard me in the bathroom and would stick their little paws up through that hole to greet me, and wrap their little fingers around mine, I would just melt (there was no way they could reach up and bite, the hole was too small) I was glad they survived and were able to go free, but I sure did miss them. I would sit there and listen to them play and then get into a squabble and then play again. After they left it was soooo quite and it took me a few days to get used to the silence, LOL!
It was a great experience to be able to listen to their natural wild ways:)

Yea, I would have a problem with no noise too. I missed the train in the backyard at night when I moved out of the house! LOL!
The kits are lucky that they wound up under your your deck instead of some hunters deck!
