Sad tale of a really determined suicidal houseplant

:( Can you stand this tale of distress and horror?

I entered my bathroom and discovered that the cat-friendly plant that had been watering there had suddenly been overcome by suicidal thoughts. The death scene was dreadful. I have no forensic training, but to leap from the sink top and then fling oneself rolling the length, the breadth, the depth of the room (and apparently circling the toilet at least once) shows such determined despair it brought tears to my eyes. Especially when you think how few muscles plants have.

Judging by the paw prints, one (at least) of my fur-babies attemped a Heimlich maneuver, and probably other lifesaving attempts. They didn't work. Fortunately, my cats are phlegmatic: although the attempts at life-saving didn't work, they chose to bravely go on with their own agendas without being sucked into the morass of despair that overcame the houseplant.


It's amazing. I had NO IDEA that the plant was depressed. Life is uncertain. Go home and hug your fur-babies (and plants, if you want to).

we had the same experience few months ago.... weird, what's wrong with plants anyways ;)

My turn to ROFLOL. Now I will know for sure if Edwina is sneaking onto the computer. (She has NEVER touched any house plant except the cat grass I occasionally have for her.) If I experience a jump in my vegetation mortality rates I will know why!

The only question will be whether she logs on while I'm at work or during the night when I am sleeping! (I picture the eerie glow of the computer screen piercing the dark of the night. I've wonder what she does when she leaves for a few hours about 2 or 3 in the morning!)

Just read of the horrible demise of the house plant. Didn't
leave a note or anything? How sad...Well at least the kitties
have not been emotionally scarred by the whole incident.

There was something scratched in the dirt near the scales. It looked like it said "THE CA". Not sure what it was trying for.

I don't dare bring home a real house plant, they practically steal the bun's veggies every night!! (Noah has been known to steal them directly from the fridge!!) :rolleyes:

I think your plant belonged to the same secret sects as mine and opted for mass suicide! Now I fenced in the survivors so that I can prevent them from hurting themselves :D

I may follow in your footsteps. It's hard to tell when a plant is depressed. (And it would be horrible if the depression spread to the cats.)

Aren't there any signs of depression in plants? I'm sure we could find a webpage on it somewhere on this World Wide Web... I mean it would seem like plants with half-eate..oops I mean droopy leaves would just need some counseling. And if they're really quiet, keep to themselves alot. You know, any changes in their normal routine and behavior. Who knows? Just be satisfied that the recently deceased plant did not get a hold of a gun and go postal on the other plants. That would have been a nightmare....That is why I firmly believe in keeping the gun laws strict and keeping guns out of the hands of plants!!! You never know with them...

My kitty wants me to put a bumper sticker on my car "Cats don't kill plants, Plants kill plants!" :p ;)

A few years ago, Richard and I had a similar experience with a giant amaryllis. It sat atop a slate-topped cabinet in the dining room. One morning two gorgeous orange-red flowers were open at the top of the 24 inch stalk, and another bud was getting ready to pop. That afternoon I found it on the floor with its stalk broken in the middle. Both Buster and Spot sniffed and smacked it in an attempt at rescuscitation with no success.

Later in the year we brought in a large potted catnip plant to let the kids have random access to fresh catnip. There was some hiding and growling for a while, and then Buster apparently misunderstood what he was supposed to do with it. Buster climbed into the middle of the pot and tinkled. By the next morning the catnip plant had turned yellow and wilted.

After that, we only brought in cat grass.
