‘Critter crawl’ could mean less roadkill
Device allows animals to go under highways rather than across

Updated: 1:57 p.m. ET March 18, 2005MISSOULA, Mont. - It may not help a chicken cross the road, but it may cut down on some roadkill.

The University of Montana has patented a professor’s invention to help small animals get across busy highways without getting killed.

It’s called “critter crawl” and consists of a metal mesh shelf suspended inside a culvert -- to let animals go under the road instead of across it.

It also has a side tube for use by smaller animals like mice.

Four of the shelves are now being used on a busy highway in southwestern Montana. An ecologist says he’s documented animals like weasels, raccoons and house cats using it.

maybe we could get a patent on a deer overpass.

we have overpasses here, the area alogside the highways are fenced and then there are fenced in overpasses for the animals to use.

at Banff(of Jasper?) National Park in Canada,they actually have special over passes for all the animals.It's really neat,the overpasses actually have grass and everything.And its all fenced on the side of the road,too.

They have special under passes on the Cocahala where deer, moose, bear and other animals pass under the highway. They also have special fences along the entire road so animals can not get onto the highway, they also have special one way gates for animals who manage to get on the highway so they can get off safely.
