We are official!!!!

We just received our determination letter from the IRS. We are now officially a 501c3 non profit organization. Which means that any donations made to us are tax-deductible.

Not only that, but it allows us to apply for grants and gives us a lot more options with fundraising and operations.

I am so excited. It was a great deal of work, but it was well worth it.

Congratulations Clara :) That is wonderful. I remember when
you first posted about securing credentials as non profit .Wow,
you've been busy. I'm so glad for you & your rescue group.:D

I own a rescue and I'm going to try to apply for a 501c3 non profit license here soon. Any tips?

Your very first step is to do a great deal of research. Obtaining 501c3 status is not easy or cheap, but it can be done. We were very lucky to have a lawyer help us pro bono which kept the cost down considerably. Basically there are several steps you have to take. You will need to get incorporated by your state before you can apply to the IRS for Private Charity status.

A really good resourse is the book "How to Form A Nonprofit Corporation" by Anthony Mancuso. He has step by step instructions as well as sample Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and IRS paperwork.

What is your rescue called? I don't think I ever heard the name of it?

How long did it take you to get it? I'm not sure when I will be doing it because I do know it takes alot of time, and I have heard that you need to hire a lawyer.

Thank you for the name of the book! I'll look into buying it!
