looking for a 4month old puppy st.louis mo

hi i'am looking for a 4 month old puppy,(reason 4 months old) well, i had gotten a pit bull from a rescue pl and she had all her shots and i was socializing her ( i was told to socialize her very well being the breed she was and so we went to class, parks ,pet stores , and just everywere ) and one day she got sick so off to the vet we went and then i got told she had parvo , the vet said she must have gotten it in beteen shots?? i just dont understand it, i would have never took her to all those pl if she didnt have all 3 sets! i thought with 2 series of shots and her last series she had for a week that she should of not gotten this deases and the vet also said that pit bulls and rots are realy more venerable to this dease then other dogs? so anyways , i left her there to get treated and then that night after work i stoped in to check on her and the vet said that she would not make it . i had to have her put to sleep i was just heart broken she was just a pup and we were just starting out she was a great pup and it was hard for me beacaus the hole reason i had gotten her was that i had just put my 11 year old dog (murphy) to sleep she had diabetes and i had been giving her shots twice a day. and one day she took a turn for the worse,her kidneys were shutting down due to the diabetes. and with her i just felt like i had been through so much and did everything i could for her and i still lost her ( but i do need to remember she was 11 years old ) i just didnt wanna see her go yet. so i had her put to sleep which was 3 months before i had gotten the pit bull. so i have had to but 2 dogs to sleep in 6 months . which was very hard for me ! anyways , just wanted to tell my storie from the beginning that way everyone would know about me(my pet story) and why iam looking for a dog and besides this seem like a nice pl to chat with other pet owners so i thougth i would join (and get the word out that iam looking for a puppy LOL) ok heres why my new puppy has to be 4 months old, (that would be the youngest that i could have) the vet said my new pet would have to be old enough to have had all its series of shots and since the last series of shots is around 16 weeks that the pup would then be coverd not to get the parvo (even though i have bleached the yard bought kennal gard for the house and just on and on, he said that you just cant get it all and that a pup would prob.still get it somehow so thats why i need a pup at least 4 months of age (i dont think that you could give a pup all of its series of shots any sooner then that?) so if there is any body out there that has a puppy(i fogot to menchen i need a female i have a small male Chihuahua and the vet said it would be best if i did not get same sex.) in the st.louis,mo area i would drive to IL, also) i would like a short haired dog like a boxer mix but not a must. i would give it a great loving home. just go to www.dogster.com (and under name typ in "zina" and you can see that i love my pets. we would be going to classes because i belive in well manners (lol) and just becausi love to go . and we go all summer to purina farms also if ur wondering about shelters and rescues well i have tryed. most of the puppies there are to young for me to have since they must have had all there shots or there are no females. iam still look online everyday at shelters. wow sorry so long i could just go on and on lol. hope to make new friends in here. thanks sylvia:) by the way every one should check out www.dogster.com great pl:)

Yup - http://petfinder.org is a good resource. Perhaps waiting until January, when all the ill-considered "Christmas Puppy for the kids" start ending up in shelters ...

Welcome. What a tragic story. I'm sorry to hear that.

Yes it is best to socialize any dog at a young age but you do have to be careful.

There are some safer places to socialize a pup, like car rides, friends & relatives homes where you know the history, obedience classes (reputable ones anyways).

The main places to stay away from is entirely public places, places where anyone & anything is allowed. Even though obedience classes are public, they are strict on their rules (UTD on vaccines etc..) Public parks are the worst.

I just want to point out that not only should you search for a dog that is older, but you want to make sure it has already had its series of shots before you aquire the pup. No matter what the age there is a good chance you can get a dog that has not had any or only its first series of vaccines.
ALSO you want to wait 2 weeks AFTER the last vaccine until you bring her into your home & out & about.

The best bet would be to wait 6 months (I know its hard) but parvo can live for 6 months.

You can also have your vet run a titre to find out how well your prospective dog will fare in a parvo-infected environment.

Have you checked local shelters?

Adult dogs usually have a higher immune system.

:) hey Sylvia! welcome to PT! I am so sorry for your loss, I have heard how deadly Parvo can be to puppies, and it isn't your fault at all. Zina was so gorgeous, it looks like she had a very happy life in the time that she was with you guys.

I agree, petfinder.com is an *awesome* place to find dogs! Just do a search for a baby/young, female, boxer in your city and all of the dogs in your area that are available will show up ;).. I did a search just for fun and this beautiful girl showed up. She looks about 6 months, so she has obviously had all of her shots, and she is just gorgeous. there are tons of dogs like her on Petfinder, really great dogs that are looking for loving homes like yours! Her name is Penny, it says she's probably a pure Boxer, looks like she could have a little pit or lab in her. She is in Indiana, but it says she can go to MO

There is a section of Pet Talk with "dog rescue" that you can check and see if there is on in there you would be interested in. Petfinder is definately a good place to look.

If you are looking for another Pit, http://www.pbrc.net is one of the best Pit Bull rescue sites to try. They have listings of Pits all over the country. Here in Houston we have an E-rescue that sends emails of dogs needing help all the time and there are many different one, including Pits http://www.e-rescue-houston.org

hello every one and thanks for the reply! im glad ppl are seeing my post.
iam still looking for a puppy, so anybody out there(mo area) wanting there puppy or young dog to have a great home just get in touch with me :) and thanks to "bckrazy" for taking the time out to search on petfinders for me but i have done that and that is a boxer rescue pl and they will not let ppl adopt dogs that do not have a fenced in yard?? why i dont know i think that that is not right because i sure would have taken penny the boxer you found! she is realy cute so thank you all for the help and im sure i will find one soon talk to you all later sylvia:)

The reasoning behind not adopting if you don't have a fenced yard is, they are affraid the dog will either be, chained outside or allowed to run loose. Some of the rules and restrictions rescue groups have either come from common sense or experience with previous adoptions. The "no fence, no adoption" is an experience they've probably had and they don't want to repeat it. I'm not saying you would, they've just heard people make promises and tell lies just so they can get a dog and chain it outside. Puppy season is coming, so just give it a little more time and the shelters will be full again, either with accidental litters or the Christmas puppies no one wants anymore.

i have heard that also that puppy season (so to say ) is in the winter and sommer for kittens sylvia
