What is Gotcha Day?

What is Gotcha Day? I have seen this all over this board but do not know the meaning.

Gotcha Day is the day a person got their pet!
Since lots of us don't know their birthdays, we celebrate the anniversary of the day we "got them" or their gotcha day!
