How good is Peanute butter for your dog?

Breeze is a food HOUND! Seriously, no dog is as bad as she is (we remember the 20 pound of dog food incedent :rolleyes: )

Well, Breeze wolfs down her foor. She gets 1 cup twice a day. She eats a whole cup in 3 gulps. She seriously is taking in SOOO much air when she eats I worry she is going to get bloat. Seriously, she takes in more air at her meal time then I do ALL day!

Anyway, the ONLY thing I've found that calms and slows her down is peanute butter. I cut her food down a bit and add in one spoonful of peanute butter and then mush it all around. I dont' mind doing this twice a day, BUT how good is this for her? I figure it's not bad for her, but what if she eats it for like 2 months straigh twice a day, that can't be healthy as a long term solution.

Do you think adding the peanute butter and teaching her to lick her food will eventually help her? Is there some other way to train her?

I don't know if it is good or bad, but I must say it IS hilarious! I get a kick out of feeding my dogs peanut butter. lol.

Well, Major has that problem too!! My solution is simple and effective! I say 'leave it' and then I throw his food all around the yard. Then I say ok and he gets to find it! Haha! I'm sure it would work if Breeze is like Major with food, no doubt she is!

some other tricks for forceing a dog to slow down, is to place a rock in the center of the food dish that they have to eat around. or you can spread the food out in a large pan/tray. those are the 2 tricks I remember off hand :p

Peanut butter isn't bad for dogs. I think 2 tablespoons per day is fine, but you could ask your vet just in case. The shelter dogs at my shelter get a few kongs a day with probably around 2 tablespoons total of peanut butter. I don't give it to my dogs too often because I don't need to, but its Reece's favorite! I actually just got finished giving my foster dog a hollow sterilized bone with a bunch of peanut butter in it.

I was going to recommend the rock thing that Cali mentioned. I've heard it works really well.

Just make sure it's a big enough rock that the dog can't swallow it. I have a rock eater --or rather a former rock eater. Trust me, the surgery to remove the rocks is not fun or cheap!

What about using the Kong Stuff'n PB flavored instead? I don't know if that's any better for them, guess you could research and find out. :)

Both Nala and Kiara scarf down their food. I've often fed Nala in one of her food balls. Possibly you could feed Breeze with one of those. It only allows them to get a few kibbles at a time, plus its fun! :)

Food balls, Molecule balls, Buster Cubes, Kongs, etc are GREAT for feeding dinner.

I give peanut butter to my dogs at least once a day!

Some times I take Milkbone type bones, and spread peanut butter on them. Or make a little sandwich out of two of them!!

I like to fill kongs with treats, then top it off with peanut butter, this way they have to work a little before getting to the treats!

Yeah, I've tried leaving Nebo with a molecule ball...problem was, he doesn't like to eat his dinner most of the time (opposite problem of Breeze) so he just scattered dog food ALL over the house. Of course when Reggie and Sydney were let out he was suddenly hungry. :rolleyes:

Try putting water in his dinner. Honey never used to eat hers but now she gobbles it down with the water in it.

Peanut Butter won't hurt but don't give it to him on a regular basis, let's just say he'll get WAY overweight! Like Honey....she is so huge and plump partway from peanut butter part way from too many milkbones!:D Honey can't have peanut butter anymore 1. She is overweight as it is 2. She is nasty with it and will bite,she can't have rawhide bones because her viciousness either! I give her carrots alot though,she loves them but they turn her poop orange,lol. And sometimes broccoli which isn't good for digestion but good for dental like dirty teeth and stinky breath!:D
