OMG, I can't beleave this.....

Tundra has a really large lump under her right leg. It's huge, like almost the size of a golf ball. It's about as round as a quarter.

How did I miss this? I was really busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to play with them, but I did on Firday. I got them out and they played in the tub. I didn't even notice? Can they grow REALLY fast? I dunno?? I'm so worried. I don't want to loose her and I dont' want her to be in any pain. My poor baby girl :(

My mom came over to look at her and said it loks more like it is Fluid filled, what would cause this then? There are no marks on it or anything? I'm so worried.

I don't know much about rats, but I hope the best for you and your rattie girl. did you call the vet? Maybe they could help.

Most definitly an abcess! I wouldn't worry too much yet but take her too the vet and make sure it gets removed! You were lucky she didn't get it on her throat or stomach! My aunt's rabbit Muffin has had an abcess like that behind her leg for a year and now, she is 6 years old.

Thank you so much, my biggest worry is of course cancer. Rats are SO prone to it that I check mine every 3 to 4 days for cancer. It's so sad, but I know ALOT of rats who die from it. :(

Ash, I'm sure it's nothing serious. Let us know as soon as you can what they vet says.

It's going to be 100 dollars to get it removed. Not as high as I thought it would be.

Now I have to deced if it is worth it. Tundra is 2 (Thats old for a rat) years old and there is a higher chance she won't come out of the surgery :( my vet said she seems like she would be a good conidate for it though, she was pretty hopefully.

I won't know exactly what the lump is untill Tomrrow at 2. Please keep your fingers crossed it's nothing!

don't worry every rat i have ever owned has gotten a lump the only problem was after a while it grows and may cause problems with regular day to day activities.... I'm glad you took her to the vet and am hoping you come back with good news... yes 2 is old for a rat and is why she probably had the lump it could just be a lump of fat as well don't get yourself all worked up until you know what it is... so it is very common especially in female rats... Is it female? You might have already stated this.

Hey Ash, I am really sorry. I am in the same boat as you. Except, you are so lucky because your vet is not an "arsehole" and charge outrageous prices for such a small animal. It will cost me $300 to get them removed my other vet wanted $500. Chloe's tumor is in her armpit and is the size of a tennis ball- it's getting removed on Monday. Suzie has one between her back legs she will be getting hers removed too. Just make sure to help clean her since that tumor can cause bathing troubles. I know Chloe has a really hard time walking so I have her in a special cage set up until she gets hers removed. It is most likely not cancer, those tumors are generally benign 99% of the time.


Wabbitwuver, it is not an abcess. It is a mammory tumor, just about all female rats get them- especially pet store rats.

i dont think it is a absess honestly. it looks like a mammory tumor.
