Cruciate Surgery

Does anyone know anything about Cruciate Surgery? A friend of mine from work, her 1 1/2 year old Black Lab Euker has torn his cruciate and needs to have surgery. Any info on it, would be greatly appreciated.

My rott had her repaired in one leg Jan. 01, then just a couple months ago tore the other one... we are waiting on surgery for that one... its not too bad yet in the one leg.

There are different types of surgeries to help correct the problem.

My Great Pyr had the surgery when she was about 2 yrs. old. She tore the cruciate ligament jumping down three stairs. Also, my niece's dog just had the surgery done on her chocolate lab. There is a long recovery time, but my Pyr did well with it and my niece's dog, Guiness, is doing well, too.

This seems to be a common problem in our Retrievers, for sure. I have heard of many Goldens and Labs that have had to have this surgery, although we have been lucky and none of ours have ever needed it (knock on wood).

I hope Euker will be fine, Staci. Helen's "other" family has a Chocolate Lab, Ben, and he had to have this surgery last month. He is doing great. Keeping them quiet, after the surgery, seems to be the hardest thing.

There are two methods for this surgery, my Tawny has had both, the first time was about 5 years ago. on one knee, she had theis method iwhich completley changed the shape of the knee so, there would be any movement back and forth. This is very serious surgery and take a long time for recovery but it was worth it and should only be done by an orthopedic surgeon. The second time we just didn't have the $1400 cdn and our vet used a wire method. She bore holes and tied wire around the joint, Tawny has developed arthitis in this knee but she is using Medicam (no steroids) daily and get around really well. She is 13 going on 2. Both methods require about 6-8 weeks of being very careful, no walks for the first while even to get her pee mail. It was well worth it. Don't wait too long as they are in pain.

Euchre had surgery today and should get to come home Tomorrow! Is doing pretty good!!!
