Rescuing small pets

Hello, I'm new. I'd like to find tons of information about adoptions of pets other than cats and dogs (easy enough to find info for them!) We currently have a 12 year old cat who's been with us since she was 5 weeks. For the time being, since she's an only critter and pretty darn territorial, she rules the house. But since she's 12, we know we won't have her forever. :( After kitty, we'd like to adopt just a whole bunch of various small critters - rodents, reptiles, snakes and birds, just whatever - before we bring in new cats. So far, all we know to do is look in the papers for "free to a good home" and low priced pets whose current owners don't want to keep them. Does anyone have any other "how to" suggestions? We live in Pittsburgh, PA.
