We might get a bird!
Yes, my mom has always wanted a bird, and she had one a few decades back! I'm so excited! Right now I'm looking on PetFinder for some available adoptees.
She wants a bird that talks, but is on the less expensive side. With her own home, we're on a tight budget. Any ideas?

i don't know much about birds, but congrats on getting one:cool:

You're getting a bird?!?! Yippee!!!!
What kind of bird are you thinking on? Pretty much all parrots can learn to talk.........even parakeets, but it depends on the bird and there's no guarantee on that. Male cockatiels do talk often, but again, not *all* of them do. Pretty much all of them can learn to whistle though. In the smaller/less expensive birds, I think conures talk more commonly. Keep us updated!

If she doesn't have a lot of expreience with birds I'd suggest a male cockatiel or budgie.
Other good ones that might be a bit more challenging tht I can think of....
Senegals: Not the BEST talkers, but they do talk a bit. They're small, and they tend to bond very closely to ONE person. They'll tolerate other people, but they bond most with one.
Green-Cheek Conures: VERY CUTE! They have soft little voices that can be hard to understand if you aren't listening closely. They're very sweet, although conures can be a bit louder than some people like.
Male Parrotlets: You're not guaranteed a talker, but they are SWEET, playful, silly, and all-around awesome. (I'm a bit biased because they're my favorite bird!)
Moustache Parakeets: Pretty little birds, a bit better talkers than budgies. Friendly, and less active than a lot of birds.
I can think of a few more, but I'll leave the list there for now. I can answer any questions about any of these, but PCB knows WAY more about 'tiels than I do. We don't carry tiels at work. :(

Awww, I just checked out our local bird rescue's site.....the 55 year old green-winged macaw I loved is being adopted!! HAPPY!!
Edit: here's something I've never seen before: a greater Vasa Parrot. I don't know anything about them, but a quick search turned up some pages that made me think they might be a consideration too. This one's a bit broken, but she's still good! :)

I wouldn't get a conure, they are rather loud screamers. Quakers are another loud bird I wouldn't get. My favorite bird is a cockatiel, although they arn't big talkers they are very friendly birds who love to be with people. I also adore Indain ringneck paeakeets. They are great talkers and very friendly, but yet they are not very big. Here is a picture of my Indain ringkneck, Oscar.
