Chewing and eating sticks?

Nebo has this annoying habit he enjoys. He goes outside in the far side of my yard and chews up sticks. ALL the time. We have some lilac bushes over there and he's just chewed the crap out of them. He just lays in the snow as calm as can be and completely ignores me when I call him to come in. I didn't realize exactly how extreme it was until I explored that side of the yard. It's like a weedwacker has ripped up an entire tree and spread it all over the place, it's a mess!

I don't like the thoughts of him doing that...I'm worried he's going to get a splinter in his mouth or something. Has anybody heard of dogs being injured from chewing and eating sticks?

I had a dog that use to chew on branches all the time.
A couple of times she would get a stick caught wedged across the back roof of her mouth, and I had to carefully cut the stick.

I hope at least Nebo is doing a nice trimming job
on the Lilacs. : )

Riley is a massive stick chewer--he loves to "sneak"into the house with them, and completely shred them to bits. It hasn't made him sick so far, but I do take them away from him when I catch him, just in case.

Bailey loves chewing and eating sticks. I try to stop her when she does it. If I don't catch her in time, usually I will be woken up at 3 or 4 am when she starts barfing up the stick pieces in her crate. YUCK!

Malone loves to chew up sticks, too. And funny thing is, he's completely shredded our lilac too. Must taste good to them or something. I've wondered about whether it is harmful to him, and usually don't let him do it for too long. But he likes to try and get away with it. :rolleyes:

Keegan does the same thing!!! She thinks she has hit the JACKPOT when she gets a stick. I remember when she was like 9 weeks old we were at my parents house and she was running across the yard stopped grabbed a stick about 5 feet long and came flying up across the yard to my dad. She thought she had done something good. She was just a weeee little fart. And it was like 10x bigger then she was.
I try to take them from her when she does it.
No clue why she does it.
