Bunny Hutch Advice

Hi Bunny Lovers, on for more advice I'm afraid !!! I've got an indoor bunny (Fester) who unfortunately cannot run about FT as I need to supervise him with my cat. What I'm wondering is whether you line your hutch with anything before putting down sawdust and hay ??? I was lining Festers with newspaper but he started ripping it all up and eating it, I've currently not lined it at all but I just wondered what you guys did !!! I was also thinking about perhaps lining it with the stuff you line drawers with, figured it could be cleaned easily and would be hygienic (thinks its called fablon!) Anyway I'd love to know your views :)

Since my buns have cages with plastic floors sometimes I line with newspapers, other times I jjust put down a thin layer of baking soda..the baking soda acts as a deoderizer. Please go to www.rabbit.org and read up on litter....sawdust and pine and cedar shavings are not good bedding for rabbits....their urine mixes with an oil in the soft woods and can cause a cancer causing vapor. Yes, it takes several years for the cancer to develop but is it really worth the risk?

Have you been able to join the Tufy Forum yet? Those UK gals will be happy to give you advice on what they use for litter.

karis pen has a coroplast bottom and runner mat over top, then only bedding she has in it is in her litter box though..

We use rice-straw or maize mats we get at Pier 1 to line all the flat surfaces in Miss Hoppy's hutch.
I looked it up - the mats aren't listed on their website, but there is one in Glasgow!

You can buy them in 1-foot squares. I buy a bunch at a time, as they are also okay for them to eat, and apparently fun to destroy, as well as nice and comfy to lie on, so we have a few scattered about the kitchen floor as well.

These rice-straw mats sounds good, will visit the shop asap !!
He likes to play with blankets etc so last night I put an old towel in his cage, what fun he had pushing it around all night and re-organising his cage over and over again !!!

Sorry I missed the bit on rabbit.org about the sawdust, have taken it out of his cage now but it shouldn't of been a problem cos he only ever unrinates in his litter box anyway!! Do you think he'd like some carpet in his cage ??? Mind you I don't want to encourage him to rip up my living room carpet !!! Wotcha think ??

Ps You've been so much help with your advice as I'm afraid I don't know anyone who has or has ever had a rabbit, don't know why cos they're soooooo cute and friendly

This wouldn't work for rabbits cause they would eat it but you are going to laugh when I tell you what I line Nibbles bed with. Incotenince pads. They are clean ink free and easy for Alek and me to clean up. He has a towel too but gets 90% of the yuk on the pad.

Wow, incontenient pads!!!! What a great idea! 'Course my buns love to rip things up but it is worth a try. I did try the rice mats but my guys didn't seem to interested in them....but I think that was a year ago and so I think I'll try them again.

INCONTENINCE pads................I've so much to learn !!!
I'll try him on some carpet I think, just to see what he thinks........must admit he's not really a chewer, apart from cables !!!! Went to logon to the computer last night and he's chewed through the cable !!! but how can you be angry, he's too much of a cutie and it is natural instinct !!!
