It would depend on the cat..I brought Twicket home into a house with 7 resident cats. Twicket was 13 at the time and the other cats ranged from 8 months to four years. .. No major problems.
I also think it would depend on the personality of the cat. Bringing in a domimant older cat may bring mayhem if Maggie wants to be the dominant cat in her house too. Then again, many older cats are chilled out individuals who will happily settle into a routine and not cause any problems. It's really hard to tell until you bring one home ;)
Amber,
As long as you introduce them gradually, I don't see a problem at all! I have 8 cats and they all get along for the most part.
The key is to rub your 10 month old cat down with a towel and let the new kitty smell his scent and vice versa. Keep the new kitty in a separate room for about a week. Then gradually let the new kitty out to explore SUPERVISED. There will be hissing, growling and spitting, but as long as there's no blood shed, don't worry. And don't expect it to take overnight, patience is the key.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Thankyou all so much for the information. :)
Moosmom is exactly right! Its all in the introduction.and an older Cat may resent the New Cat , but if you give them time , then eventually they will become Cat Pals! Patience is what is needed here!
Thankyou
