Life Span: 10-12 yrs.
Breed Group: Guardian Dogs
Overview
Protective and territorial, Tibetan mastiffs treat strangers with extreme suspicion and can be aggressive with other dogs.
humm.., I guess I'll have to tell him this stuff, what is with all the larger breeds living such short lives??
Generally, larger dogs have a shorter life span but that's just in general...I'm sure there are plenty of big well aged dogs around.

I don't think she means a particular breed...she's talking more about individual dogs. (Sorry if I'm wrong with my 'interpretation' here...just trying to help! :))Quote:

Anyway...I can think of plenty of large dogs I have known that have lived well into their teen years. My friend had a Mastiff that lived to be 15, and my uncle has two Bernese Mountain Dogs that are already 14 and still have a lot of life left in them.
It varies from dog to dog...you really can't be too judgemental. :)
My friend had a Great Dane that lived to 11. Thats pretty old for a dane!Quote:

My friend has a Greater Swiss Mountan Dog that is 13.
these aren't big breeds but a guy i know has a cocker that is 16 and another girl i know had ( :( ) a dachshund that died at age 20!!!
How much experience does your dad have with dogs in general? Could he simply want a big dog to look impressive? I don't mean to be rude or insinuate anything here but adopting a dog for selfish reasons is just that, selfish. I had a huge St Bernard/lab mix that lived to be 14 and a huge Akita mix that was 14 as well. Please don't be offended by my remarks. Sometimes I get nervous and worry about motives when it comes to pet owners.
Here is a cool site:
