Pee in the Crate

Ringo has been peeing in his crate so I took out his bed but he still does it. So I was wondering is there anything that I can feed him to make his pee really stink so even he won't like the smell? So then he won't pee in there I've been trying to take him out more often but my dad says it will get him used to peeing a lot then it will be an inconveinince because he won't be used to holding his bladder as much so he will need to constantly pee( That's his theory) but If you have any tips please post back.

I don't know if there's anything to make it smellier. I don't think that would work very well though. Apparently, dogs like smelly things. I think your dad's theory makes sense but I don't think it's true at all. Kai was taken out to pee about 3 times in an hour when potty training. Now, he can last over night without any problems. Holding it comes with age. Pups usually have to pee more often because that's all they can hold and control. I think taking ringo to pee as often as you can is one of the best ways to avoid peeing inside. As he grows older, you can take him out less often and eventually he'll be fine in the house for a period of time.

Is his crate too big?? If his crate is too big he will do it in there. When i got got Max, he was fine but then all of sudden he started going in his crate for about a week. Then he stoped. He might have a urinarty tract infection. It might be the reason why he can't hold it and maybe the reason it smells.

My mother in law is all of a sudden having the same problem with Casey, her pom.
When is Ringo doing this?? Casey was doing it early in the morning before she got up, so she just got up earlier and took him out, and his bed has been dry the past few days.
Also if his crate is too big, that could cause a problem too.
When Abbey started peeing in the house, I ran to the vet to rule out an infection too--in her case it was a urinary tract infection, and it's always best to check it out!!

If his crate is too big he will use the other half for a potty. Try getting an old cardboard box and cutting it to the size of the crate (put something big behind it so he can't push it over) Put the cardboard up, as a barrier, then use heavy tape through the Slats to hold it in place.

I was just about to post the same thing. If the crate is too big, then he can pee in one spot and still have room to sit...but if you fill it half way with a box, he would be forced to lay in the pee and might think twice before peeing in the crate....i dont believe puppies can control their bladder very well until 14 weeks, or around that time anyway....good luck :) I am getting a puppy in about 3 weeks and i am sure i will posting tons of questions and going thru similiar things!!!

Well his crate isn't too big and when i noticed him doing this i made his crate smaller (it came with this divider thing to help get the right amount of space) and when he pees it gets all over his underside and he stands in the very corner and barks for me to let him out which when i try to pick him up and wash him off it's just a hassle he wont let me wash him then i wash out the crate and its all just a gross mess i hate dealing with. And hes like 5 months old so i dont think he's too young to hold his bladder that "long" I am taking him to the vet today so we can see if it a uti then his feces has also been a little diareahhaish (sp i no)Omg he just does this whenever he'll start barking and I'm like oh he peed in the crate again!and he's such a little dramaqueen about he's flipping aroud spraying pee on me because he doesn't want a quick bath! OMG there is like no hope for Ringo I think he will never get trained and continue going whereever he wants for the rest of his life:mad: :eek: :(

How long at a time are you leaving him in the crate? 5 months is still pretty young. My dog took a solid year to train, and my mom's Pom didn't get the trick of it until he was 2!

You have gotten some good advice. Keep the crate small and do not put any blankets/beds in it. Also 5 months is still pretty young and keep in mind Ringo is a small dog (yorkie if I remember correctly) so therefore a smaller bladder than larger dogs & will need to go more often than a bigger dog. Keep training & praise like no tomorrow when he does potty in the right spot. Good luck.

I think the most important part of housebreaking a pup is routine. When I was housebreaking my two pups they were on a strict schudule, infact, they still are. Pee at 5:30am, eat at 7:00am, pee and poop at 7:30 am, pee at 4:00pm, eat at 5:00pm, and pee and poop at 6:00pm. However, when they were 5 months old they were going out every hour until they understood that peeing in the crate or the house was not allowed. Also, my female needed the crate shortened often. She finally got the hang of it. If this is new behavior, I would take your pup to the vet. Don't give up, you will be surprised at how all of sudden your pup gets it.

Ohio is the most lame excuse for a state I'd soo much rather be in California Right now especially since the cruddy weather we've been having (were you affected by those storms we've had the past few nights? we lost two trees because of them!!), ugg ya call this summer!?:rolleyes:

puppygrrl4eva7, I live in Hilliard on the far west side of Columbus and it is like the Bermuda Triangle here. It seems like our weather is different than many other areas in Columbus. We rarely get strong winds like some folks get only a few miles away. Have no idea why because it is so flat over here that if you look to the west far enough you can see the back of your head!
