My Kitty Girl is a little brat but I love her

Sedna is about a year and a half old, and still has not calmed down. Unfourtunatly the spray bottle with water, water & vineger, and water and lemon juice does not work unless I thouroughly soak her.

She has this habit of 4 am scratching of the mattress, and despite spraying, and grounding her to the bathroom and a firm "NO!" - she still is doing this. She has stuff to scratch & I've tried the catnip on her scratching post - but still every night I hear a deep scratch. Trimming her nails works for about 2 days - but after that she's back at it. Also if I hang my hand down off the mattress and pet her she stops - but I gotta sleep! I think she gets lonely while I am sleeping - on weekends (Friday & Saturday) she usually doesn't pull the scratching routine, but Sunday night - even if I've spent all weekend with her - scratch - scratttttccccccch, rippppppp! I can't wake up every night at 4 am to pet my kitty cat because she is bored while I sleep.

I was working from home for the first 9 months of her furry life, so I suspect she prefers it when I am at home all the time. She's quite spoiled - she has many toys, of which she plays with by herself with relish! She's a very playful little girl - I get or make her a new toy every few weeks - or I clean behind the fridge & find forgotten toys, but she wants constant attention.

The minute company comes she's right there - on laps and bringing out toys for guests to play catch with. She's very affectionate - every morning when my alarm goes off she's up on my chest kneading me and purring. She sleeps in the crook of my legs, small of my back, or on my stomach at night.

I suspect getting her a friend or two may help - but she also plays very rough, with humans, toys, and even other cats (she's only met 2 other cats and both ones she was very dominant over and played a little too rough). She is quite bitey too - but she doesn't bite humans as often any more. I don't play rough with her or let guests play rough with her - so I know the agressiveness is not due to being encouraged. She's Manx with a tail - which may account for certain personality traits and her lack of concern with the spray bottle, but it makes me worry about bringing in a kitten.

Because she's an agressive little spitfire - so I think I'll need to get an older kitten (6 to 8 months).

Does anyone have any advice for me regarding discipline, and if you think bringing in a friend kitty for her will help and if I am making the right choice with an older kitten?

i dont really have much advice but just wanted to comment on your kitty, she is so gorgeous, she sounds like a real little spitfire, another wonderful all black girl.
Maybe an older kitten, a boy would be best, i have been told get the opposite sex, depends really on the cat u adopt, as to who will be dominant,in my case i had ash first , when sooti arrived he was fine for a while then he became dominant over the older bigger and much more aggressive cat, much to my disbelief, now with lexie, ash has taken over being the BOSS. so who knows.

A friend will probably help. They also have hanging scratch pads, I have a big mouse that I hang from a bed post, It saves the matress. Dominace will switch back and forth between cats, and they might each claim dominace over certain things, the food bowls, your lap, certain toys etc. But, it sounds like an older kitten/cat would be best, or a puppy.:D

Welcome to Pet Talk! Your little girl is absolutely beautiful. I agree that another kitten may help your problem. It really made a difference with us when we got our second furball of joy. I really don't think it matters what sex the new cat is. I have two females and they could not get along any better. The LOVE each other.

I've given the local no-kill resuce foundation a call, on Sunday my boyfriend & I are going to meet some kitties.
We'rre going over to the foster's place to meet 2 brother & sister teams - we are going to get two adolecents. The foster has two sets of brother & sister pairs.

I must admit she looks bratty -but so cute:) I know this same look in my Tigris' eyes together with the same behavior.

Another kitty would be a good Idea -but be prepared the start can be rough;)

I am going through the exact same problems with my naughty kitty Pixel. She has just come home from a week at the vet's and has excess energy to burn. Her first night she ran about and pounced on us all night. My partner was not pleased when she, er, pounced on his "sensitive area" and dug the claws in :( :eek: The second night she had gotten better but still woke us up early. Last night she was even better, however, lack of sleep has me introducing "the banish" at the first instance of trouble. I shall see how it goes!

At any rate, I had the exact same problem with my other kitty
Wiskey who lives with my Mum. I eventually tired of playing with bored kitty in the middle of the night so I started to banish her at first sign of mischief. Then, an hour or so later I let her back in. If she mucked up, I kicked her out ... and so on and so forth. I won't beat around the bush - it took a really long time - but she eventually got the idea, and by the time I left home she knew that if she was bored and wanted to run around, she had to leave the bedroom to do it.

Probably the best way to do it is try banishing for short periods first, then making them longer and longer as the cat continues to disobey.

The key to this little problem is persistance, persistance, persistance. It is hard to teach a cat to do things (or not to do things), but they are good at looking out for their self-interest!
