I have the best job :)
I thought I'd introduce you guys to some new additions to my shelter :D
Angie, a min pin mix, was fending for herself in a field for at least 5 weeks. It took some kind people that long to catch her. We were thinking she would be feral since she was so hard to catch. Funny thing is, as soon as she came in to our shelter and we showed her some loving, she turned into the biggest mushball within MINUTES! It was amazing. She's the biggest baby! She LOOOOOVES to be held and rubbed. If you put her down, she'll follow you right at your heels and keep trying to climb up your leg to be picked up again :D The day we took her in, it looked like she had swallowed a watermelon!! You could feel her spine so she was very skinny but VERY PREGNANT! My manager and I stayed late the day she came in (last Tuesday) and massaged her to make her more comfortable. Since she looked ready to burst at any second, my manager took her home for the night and sure enough, not 3 hours later, she began having her first puppy! The next morning, mom and babies were moved back to our shelter in their very own room where they will stay for 8 weeks.
Here is the proud mother herself:

Here are the babies at 16 hours old - we think the father was a dapple Dachshund:

There are 5 healthy pups - 3 boys and 2 girls:

lots better in that 6 day old pic. What's a dapple dashshund?

It is the different colors (sort of like merle coloring).
Here's a site that talks about it:

A feral animal is a domesticated species that was born in the wild. Like if a stray cat ran off and had kittens and the kittens never came in contact with people. A wild animal can't be feral because they aren't domesticated. Does that make sense? (I think I always sound too confusing on the computer, hehe)

awww you really do have the best job ever>> but that will be mine one day:D :D :) :D ;)

Omg, how CUTE!! Aw, thanks for sharing!

Oh Aly, they are so adorable and Mom's a beauty. Let me know if Mom and the pups don't all get adopted. I now volunteer at a Doxie rescue here and I know we could place Mom, too. Is she at all housebroken? I guess you don't know, being in a shelter and all. Anyway let me know. :)
-
I'm pretty sure she's housebroken. She always waits for me to take her out. We did put newspaper in there for her on Sunday because thats my day off and I'm the only one she lets near the pups! and she never leaves the pups - she's a great mom. I did end up going there on Sunday afternoon to take her potty though anyway. Ok, back to my point before I babble all day - she's housebroken! She did go on the newspaper but she is a very neat little lady and was careful to get it all on the paper.
I'm sure she'll get adopted though. Small dogs go so fast here. And don't worry, we have a very good screening process and don't do same day adoptions to assure they are going to GREAT homes!
(I will keep you in mind though in case we ever do need some help - you keep us in mind too if the rescue ever gets too crowded)
