It seems there must be more to the story than we learn here - what "destruction" was happening? What "other reprimands" were given? Was he really preventing others from taking the cats to new homes? Yes, be kind to the cats, but also be sure to do your job at the same time ...

I would resist the company's efforts to trap & deliver them to a city shelter. They don't hold feral cats, they put them down.
