For those in Drought

I wish I could share this with you
The heavy rainfall outside my screen door
After another humid summer day
The clouds rolled in and burst open
Spilling rain so fast end the birds have fled
To the shelter of the densest hedges
The grass is underwater
Rain falling to quickly for the ground to absorb it
And the music of rain falling on the temporary lake it has created
Is music to my ears,
Delicate, random and steady all at once
As dusk begins to darken the already lowering skies
The birds emerge, sparrows and
Papa cardinal with his raucous chirp
only they, would can fly over the sodden ground are out
Landing on the island beneath the tree
To feast on rain-dampened seed.

Hours later
Downpours begin again
Each fat drop slapping against the surface of the water
In a concussion of sudden sound
Sounds like applause
Sounds like memories
And it's so loud it drowns out
The sound of the neighbor's air conditioner
With the sharp slaps of a million or so drops
Slamming down at once


I wish I could send this to you
All you over baked, drought-striken places
For to you
It might sound like
Relief
Or even
Joy

Very nice Karen! While I'm not in one of the worse drought areas, I'd say we're moving out of the drought here, had a lot of rain lately. That's good, except, now the yard needs mowed more!:D
