LOS ANGELES: UPDATE (see msg #4) -hit by car, broken jaw and head injury!

This kitty needs a foster or adopter.. besides donations for medical care (I'll post some photos later..)

(STILL SHARING FOR DONATIONS FOR MEDICAL, HOWEVER FOSTER OR ADOPTER DESPERATELY NEEDED PLEASE!!!!)

The kitty is doing well! He is believed to be 2 years old and also 12 lbs. and is being fed most likely from one of the ferel feeding stations or fed by community by someone who leaves food out. He is a street kitty but believed to have been a pet at one time since he is tolerating people well so this is a good sign. His bloody eye is clearing up and he is now eating and finally peed last night. He is being administered antibiotics and pain medications. His jaw will have to be wired for 6 weeks and not yet certain of his sustained head injuries and how this will effect him neurologically if at all. He is still drugged up a bit so hard to tell. But so far he is very responsive so this is a good sign. Once he is released from the hospital he will need a foster/ person or adopter please. As everybody knows kitties who are rescued need a place to go, If you can take in this boy as your foster or if you would adopt him, this is what he needs! He needs to be safe for the rest of his life and be cared for.

It is one week ago today that Carmichael was hit by a car in central Los Angeles and rushed to Advanced Critical Care in Culver City. He has made amazing progress since then, but not without some bumps in the road. And, although he is doing... very well over all, today we hit a pretty major bump.

Dr. Cohn at ACC told me it is now apparent that he has a severe misalignment of his upper and lower jaw, which was not evident at first since the large amount of swelling in his whole head was holding everything more or less in place. Eventually this problem could lead to him having trouble eating, and have other adverse effects.

The good news is that this problem can be fixed (a dental surgeon will temporarily cement his upper and lower teeth together, holding the upper jaw in place until it heals in the correct position). The bad news is that the surgery, x-rays, and placement of a feeding tube could cost as much as $1,500?? hopefully not more!

Everyone following Carmichael's progress and sharing his story on Facebook and Twitter has been amazingly generous, so I don't want to ask anyone who has donated to give more. However, if it is possible for everyone to keep sharing, perhaps it is possible to get a bit more funding from other donors. Carmichael is not only tame, but a very sweet, good-natured cat. He has had to deal with a number of people poking around his poor tender mouth, cleaning his nose, putting ointment in his eyes, etc., and he always cooperates, even purring when gets his treatments.

According to Dr. Cohn, he will be able to go to an experienced foster (or even a conscientious "non-pro") shortly after this procedure is done, so a foster (or better yet, adopter!) is greatly needed. Tomorrow I will make a short video with Dr. Cohn, showing the situation with his jaw and how they intend to fix it. Thank you for everything! Donation link under the photo. Little Carmichael in the past 10 days has been thru a lot and continual care is still needed and surgery as Dr. Cohen will explain in the video. We thought it would be best for her to help us explain his situation of what is happening. Video Update 2/17/2012 By Dr. Cohn, Total Costs now over $3000.00

THE COSTS ARE NOW GOING TO REACH $3000.00 This is a video of Dr. Amber Cohn, one of the vets at Advanced Critical Care. She is one of the doctors who has been taking care of Carmichael (she calls him "Grey" because that's what we called him when he came in). The video shows the alignment problem with Carmichael's jaw, and Dr. Cohn explains how they plan to fix it. The eye specialist at ACC, Dr. Kristin Fahrer, also examined Carmichael today, since he was still exhibiting some bleeding in his eyes which should have resolved by now. Unfortunately, she determined that the trauma to his head has caused at least temporary blindness in both his eyes. The good news is that this condition is not in any way life- threatening, and at this point, he doesn't need any kind of surgery on either eye. Partial vision may return in one or both eyes, but it's too early to tell right now. If not, he will be fine as a blind kitty, and as long as he is kept safely indoors at all times, he can look forward to a near normal existence and a long, healthy life.

Once little Carmichael is OK to leave the hospital he will need a foster or an adopter, he is a special little boy and deserves a loving home forever. From being dumped out on the streets to this, he deserves a special person to love him forever.
