All three cats got outside this AM - Yikes

While I was loading the car, the little devils managed to get the inside door to my house, open and I had not closed the door to the outside, so out they marched right on out. Or should I say, out they ran. Miley was the timid one and easy to catch. Gabe was cooperative for a change but GRAEMER! He was all over the neighborhood - under porches, behind trash cans. Of course I was on my way to the Dr. and needed to be there within a certain amount of time. Eventually I caught Graemer but he tried his darnest to get away. I was holding him so tightly I was wondering if I might be breaking bones.

I made it to my appointment on time, just a bit sweaty!

The lesson: Lock and secure both doors to the outside!

It must be a cat conspiracy. I took today off to get carpets cleaned, etc. Went out to fill the bird feeder and a certain little gray girl pushed open the door. Outside without her harness!!! Such freedom!!! We had quite a chase -- fortunately the yard is fenced. She ran to two trees and gave thought to running up them.....silly girl! A few laps around the bushes, fake pass left -- off to the right.

When we got back inside she wanted to continue the chase -- around the house!

Oh, those Abys! Actually, our spoiled trio got out once, and were totally terrified by all that space and sky. But Glorf of glorious memory LOVED the outdoors...we actually got him a harness and one of those extender leashes so he could romp in the back yard.

That's one of my biggest fears.
When I leave the house knowing I'm on a timeline. Like going to a gig (we're both musicians) and I know I can't have one get away, we take extraordinary efforts to insure they are 'locked down'
At these times we only open the garage door when the inside door is closed. We call it the 'air-lock'
Mr. Jones' last escape was on Christmas Day. It was due to people opening the front door. Get this, I was placing a giant bow on my husband's brand new gift truck! ( I know, unbelievable, but he's only getting one, really, BTW, I drive a 95 Ford:( )
And out goes Mr. Jones. out into the swamp.
After months of preparation to surprise my husband, I had to make the executive decision: truck now, cat later. Very scary.
After we opened all the gifts, I said, BTW, Mr. Jones is loose. So we all went out looking for him and my mother-in-law heard him, in the brambles. He was ultimately betrayed by his love of ham, and we got him back!

Now that I let the boys out on the pool patio, they seem to have calmed down about getting away.
No escapes since then. I'm waiting for the day that Snowy figures out the door handles. Then I have to replace them all with knobs.:rolleyes:

I used to have this problem with my RB Sydney ... ! As soon as he spotted an outdoor open , right out she rushed ! Never easy to catch him ...:rolleyes: . And the worst was that he was always heading straight to our neighbours garden ...! Usually , he could been catched after a exhausting chase ; must have been really bad for his sick heart ... poor Sydney .... I MISS YE !!!!

Oh no! So glad you caught them. Only my Scout wants to get outside...the others are now content to just look. My sofa sits right next to where the door opens. Scout can hear people walking up to he door and he hops up onto the top part of the sofa and waits by the door. Everyone who walks in knows to immeadiatly put a hand out to either catch or stop Scout from bolting. Bad kitty :)

Is it a full moon or what? When I lived in CT, I used to have to take "kitty inventory" every night when I got home from work because my oldest female, Mollie Rose, would BOLT the minute I opened the door and I was too tired to notice it. Fortunately, both the back and front doors lead to a hallway. But there have been times when I'd get up in the middle of the night and hear a cat crying out in the hallway. At first I thought it was someone else's cat (my neighbor's cat was ALWAYS getting stuck in the hallway). I'd open the door and there she would come strutting in, looking at me like "I meant to do that and what took you so long to open the door anyway???!!" MooShoo did the same thing twice. But he now thinks twice when the door opens because he knows how cold the stairway is. :D

Every now and then I will close a cat in the closet(s) or in the hall and I usually know it when I see one of the other cats pawing at the door......as though to point out the problem.

I once had a cat that would sit by the electric stove burner, if I left it on by mistake. He would just stare at it. Then I would know.

And we think cats are dumb!

Allie ran out earlier this week..and it was DARK! And, she is soooo black!! I told her I was going to spank her heiny...I scooped her up after a few minutes back and forth. She was purring all the while. She thinks it is a GAME!!!

Oh dear, Sallyanne. I am fighting keeping my Honey in the yard, and you are fighting keeping all three cats in the house!! :eek:

So glad you caught them and got them back inside. I would bet that your heartrate was up for a little while!!!! :)

Nawtee cats! I hope the doc didn't test your blood pressure after that little chase, it would've been through the roof :D

Oh what terror trio! Filou (of course him) had an excursion like that in summer. We had not noticed that there was a chance for him to leave not just the apartment (which he has managed more often) but also the house:eek: :eek: So we were looking for him everywhere and after 2 hours:eek: we thought about opening the house door and there he was saying:" It was a nice excursion but now I'm hungry". We hadn't even time to worry but as Filou is a specialist in dematerializing (you can search him for hours even in the apartment) we are relly afraid of the next time.

I went thru that panic (that whole body flush, instant sweat,
the shakes and the crazy feeling that makes you feel like you can split in half and go in two different directions at once...) this past week.

thank goodness eddie saunters...my brother's cat is a bolter...he hits that door and he's off...eddie is too cool to run.....he lulls the door into that false sense of security and slips out.

this weekend we are installing the little pneumatic door closers
on the back door, a small bit of insurance- but well worth the time.
