When does a pup start on adult food? I don't think I waited long enough for Jo, would that matter at all?
According to our vet, one year for average size dogs, and 1.5 years for large breed (over 75 lbs) I think I am going to wait until about 1 year 3 months, and then feed him 50% puppy/50% adult for a few months before switching completely.
That's what we did with Drake. When he was a year and 3 months old, we started mixing his food. Our vet recommended 75% pup and 25% adult, then 50% pup and 50%, then 25% pup and 75% adult, and then just adult.
I think 1 year is considered puppy for smaller breed dogs, 1.5 for larger breed dogs.
We changed Roxey over to adult at about a year, she just hated eating her food & would always take Angus's, then of course he would eat hers, and so on....
Also that's what our vet said, she was old enough so go ahead & start the switch to adult food.
Does the puppy food do anything for the pup? Like make it grow right?
I think the puppy food contains a bit more protein and other nurishing stuff like that in it which the pup needs for all the growing...but don't quote me on that one.
I switched Smudge when he was a little over a year old to adult food and Winter was put on it right when I got her because nobody told us what type of food she was on.
Buddha seems to prefer to eat Rielys adult food...and Riely likes to steal his food...
I know Buddha eats his food when he's in his kennel....but at night he's always at Rielys bowl in the kitchen....
Its so hard to keep them separated...
