No more eyes
My 11 year old dog, Ted E. Bear, has been blind for 2 years. He has diabetes and developed cataracts. Not being educated about cataracts, I let them go while I got him regulated with his insulin. When I finally took him to an opthamologist, it was too late to have his cataracts removed and his sight restored.
This past two weeks his right eye has been inflamed. The opthamologist changed his eye drops to see if that would help. It only got worse.
Today I took Bear to his regular vet. His eye has an ulcer on the cornea. It's very difficult to clear up these ulcers, especially as large and deep as Bear's.
Since he will never be able to see, the vet and I have decided to have his eyes both removed. No more pain, no more drops twice a day, no more worry that he'll bump into something with his eye.
When I questioned the opthamologist about the cost of eye removal, he said he didn't think it would ever come to that, but it would cost about $900 for one and $1200 for two.
My regular vet will take both eyes out this afternoon for under $300. ($108.60 for one).:D
He might look funny for a while, but we'll both be relieved in the end.

Oh, goodness, Mary. We will certainly keep Bear in our prayers while he has this surgery. He will be more comfortable, and since he hasn't been able to see anyway, he won't know what he's missing. My friend had to have one of her Pekingnese dog's eyes removed. They just closed up the socket and it looks like he has that one eye closed. It was so worth it for Gizmo. I'm hoping it will be for your Bear too. Hug him for us and let us know how it goes.

Just saw his picture. He is precious. :)

I wish Bear well on his recovery.

Thanks, Logan. I think I saw it coming for a while.
He's a real little trooper; I'm sure he'll be fine.

Bear is home!
You'd never know he had surgery. He's getting around just as well as he ever did, doesn't seem to be in any pain and eats well.
I think the doctor cheated herself---I was only charged $210.60 for meds, anesthesia and a blood test. Guess I'm such a steady customer, she gave me a break.;)
He has to take cephalexin for 7 days, twice a day.
Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers. I think they worked!

So glad to hear that Bear's surgery was successful. And that he is getting around just fine. Give him lots of TLC! That'll definetly speed up the recovery process :D
Hugs and kisses to our sweet lil Bear!
