Laceration to the leg - antibiotics needed?

Hey everyone!

Tonight, while attempting to goad Max, the neighbors new dog, into wrestling with him, Chipper grabbed Max's leg.

Max misunderstood that Chipper wanted to play and jerked back, causing a long laceration on his leg.

It cut cleanly through the skin and the muscle is showing.

We cleaned the wound and applied neosporin. It isn't bleeding anymore and I recommended to Jim to not bandage it and let it drain and dry out. (I think that's right?)

I also suggested that Jim take Max to the vet to have it looked at.

He said since it didn't appear life threatening, he felt Max would be okay.

Should Max get antibiotics anyway?

*I* would have been at the ER by now!

For Sure Max needs to be looked at by a DVM White Coat ...
a deep cut should probably be 'closed' with sutures or butterflies.

"Neosporin" ??
I'm reminds of what my Heart Buzz-Box Doc said the morning after
she 'installed' the Zapper and was explaining the dos and don'ts of the
bandaged point of insertion on my shoulder.

She got done and I volunteered the idea of smearing "Neosporin" on the
seam to 'help' with the healing.

WRONG thing to say to a White Coat!
She about had a coronary on the spot!
"WHAT did I just say? Keep it CLEAN ...
that stuff 'GROWS BUGS' wherever you put it!"

Ohhhhh-Kaaaay ... hold the Neosporin! :o

Ask the White Coat what s/he suggests ... but please get him looked at ASAP!

How's Max doing today?

Not sure. I saw Jim get in the car with Max an hour ago. When they get back, I'll ask. :)

Max is at MSU getting stitches. They had a lot of emergencies come in so Max is waiting for his turn. He should be home tonight. :)

That's a relief! ;)

At least **I'll** feel better knowing a "pro" looked at it.

Hopefully there won't be any scar to show for his 'adventure'.

Did Mr. Chips say he was "Sorrie" ??

Max is home and super groggy. Poor guy. :(

Jim wouldn't accept any money from me, so I ended up calling MSU. ;)

Turns out they decided to not stitch it afterall. It had already started to heal and they didn't want to interrupt the process. The wrapped up the leg, stuck a cone on his head, and sent Max home with painkillers and antibiotics.

I guess they want Jim to bring him back to MSU tomorrow, but he's thinking he'll just take him to Dr. Kuschel (we see the same vet). :)

Chipper covered Jim in licks and love. He's eager for forgiveness. :love:

Oh! And I guess according to the docs at MSU, hydrogen peroxide is a big no no but neosporin is fine. :D

NO, I won't even *mention* it to her ... she's no Phunn when she's MAD :mad:

Chipper better load up a Big Baggie with some of his favorite treets and
haul them over to Max as a Peace Offering.

Hope Max at least enjoys the Drug Buzz.

Maybe it is different for human and and K9, but our vet has always said the same thing...light coating of Neosporin...dont' cake it on. No hydrogen peroxide, it kills the good bacteria.

Glad Max is doing okay. Poor Chip.....he just wants ta play!!!

When Mini~Mutt (Heidi) was recovering from the maggots and her self-mutilated paw,
The Head Vet told Tami to put "Preparation H" on the raw spots on her back and paw.

I asked Heidi's Dr. Jamie about that - she expressed wonderment at the idea,
but OK'd the idea if "The Boss" suggested it. Within a week or two of
doing the Preparation H smear on her raw spots, new pink skin was
starting to take hold, followed by new FUR Sprouts in most areas.

I got the layman's version that the Prep H increased the blood flow / circulation in
the area it was applied, which promoted healing.
Worked well on her paw and leg; but the bald area on her back will forever remain "bald" -
Doc J said that's all "scar tissue" that usually grows in without any hair follicles.

Oh well - she "distinctive" this way!

I heard that Prep H is good for those sag-bags under the eyes..now I know why....Not that I've ever TRIED it, of course :p

I'm glad Max is gonna be OK. Good 'Ole Mr Chips wouldn't hurt a fly.
