Horrible dog attack!

Earlier this year I posted here about a neighbor's dog that had been getting out of its yard and attacking other dogs. Then, the people were given a warning by animal control and given a good talking to by our local police.

Yesterday the dog (a Korean fighting dog, a Gindo) walked right out of their open gate and attacked our other neighbor's dog.

My neighbor had just gone out for a minute to walk her older yellow lab. The yellow lab is seriously injured. In her efforts to protect her dog she fell and broke her right wrist.

These neighbors have a brand new baby, and now the woman cannot even hold her own child. Her dog is seriously injured and was having surgery yesterday afternoon.

Her husband was beside himself. His wife is a writer and cannot write, they will need day care for assistance with the baby, and their dog is having expensive surgery. The owners of the Gindo will now have a law suit on their hands because this is the fourth attack in our neighborhood by their dog.

The Gindo owners had kept him chained up for a while in their back yard, but became lax - and here is the result.

It is a sad comment on dog ownership and lack of responsibility.
Many Koreans have Gindos and they are not pets, but kept in their yards as guard dogs.

And who guards us as we walk our dogs?

What a tragic story! All this damage because of an irresponsible dog woner :mad: And in the end, the dog will get it. The owners will get off with a slap on the wrist and a fine.

Your neighborhood needs to be protected against these people's negligence before someone else gets hurts.

Such a tragic situation for your neighbors. I hope the dog recovers and the owners of the Gindo dog get more than a slap on the wrist or they will repeat being irresponsible pet owners.

When is enough enough? I think you need to start a petition and get the dog removed from the neighborhood by pressuring your local newspaper and the cops. This is way out of line, I know many many instances where the first attack is the last and th edog is removed or destroyed. That this seems to be an ongoing problem is unacceptable. You need to be proactive...you, your dog or yet another neighbor could be next.

I couldn't agree with you more!! When the incident occurred months ago, and I involved our Senior Lead Police Officer, he responded only because he is in charge of our neighborhood.
He made it clear that this was not a police matter, but he was only responding to our concerns. He referred me to the Animal Control. When I called Animal Control, I was firmly told that I should never have become involved. The only thing that can be done is by the person that was attacked directly with the owner of the dog that attacked.

When I became involved two dogs were being viciously attacked by the Gindo. The two dogs were on leashes being walked by a Hispanic housekeeper. I was a maniac, but got the attacking dog away from them and went directly to the owner's home.

Trust me.......they could have cared less!! It was at this point that I called the police and Animal Control.

We are talking about having a petition signed by all of the neighbors to deliver to the owners of the Gindo.

That sounds just aweful, I hate to hear tragic news like that. :(

How horrible! OK, like what kind of response is "you shouldn't have gotten involved" from Animal Control?? Jeez, I thought most of the cases that animal control gets is from concerned people who witness horrible things, and I thought it was their duty and/or the duty of the police to take care of such things. It sounds like these people shouldn't even have a dog because they are NOT responsible...and even worse...could care less about the actions of their dog against neighbors...unprovoked!! That is rediculous! People (and animals) shouldn't have to suffer from the acts...or lack thereof...of unresponsible and careless pet owners.
These people definitely need more than a slap on the wrist, but they should have to pay for all the damage done to the poor family with the baby (all the extra expenses for child care and doctor's appts for the broken wrist, etc.) and should also have their animal taken away. How awful...

You did exactly what I hope I would have done. Try to
help the person & leashed dogs being walked. I cannot
believe that someone in the city's animal control dept.
would ever say ,in effect, "it was non of your business".
What kind of attitude is that ?
I did try to find out a little more about the Korean breed
dog because I'd never heard of it before. I did find this
site that is explains this particular breed of dog.

They seem to be a remarkable, but very primitive breed and
not at all suited for urban life. If we can sent letters or sign
a petition to help in this situation, please let us know.

Liz, a thousand thanks for doing the research on the Jindo. I have discovered that I have been spelling it incorrectly, thanks to you.

The dogs pictured on this site are the exact dogs that are in our neighborhood in abundance. The white Jindo is the same as the one that is attacking other dogs. Isn't it a beautiful animal? Looks like one you would love to pet, right? The only problem is that you will lose your fingers!

The brown variety are more prevalent, but no less viscious. My other neighbors have two of them and they have been responsible for killing a cat when they got out. I have not been involved with that situation, but understand Animal Control has been at their home very frequently.

I wanted to allow my neighbors some space, but plan on talking to them tomorrow to see about starting a petition, at least to deal with the attacking dog.

My limited knowledge is that Koreans ignore our laws and do not license them, or give them the proper shots unless Animal Control follows through. I have seen Animal Control here often and have heard that they are checking door to door on licenses.

We can no longer just sit back and be "good neighbors" and not cause problems. These dogs must be controlled.

Let me start off by saying that I'm really sorry for this whole incident. It sounds really horrible :(

I don't think it's right to stereotype like that. I doubt ALL Jindos are like that dog and I also doubt that ALL the people from Korea ignore laws. I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience with both Jindos and Koreans, but not all are bad. It's like all the people who hear the word "pitbull" (or any other "dangerous" breed) and go "OMG, you own one of those KILLERS?!".

I'm sure you didn't mean it the way I took it, I'm known to take things out of context >_<, but I figured I'd just mention the above anyways. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone! I just get so mad when people act like a certain breed of dog is vicious or dangerous or whatever when in REALITY it is all the owners fault.

Good luck with whatever you'll be doing, I hope that the owners will be punished for REAL, and maybe the dog can be rehilibated (sp?) in a loving home (if that's possible...)

I looked in my dog books & quickly on the net, I can't find the breed Gindo, is this a nickname or an unregistered breed of dog?

You want the Jindo to die because he hurt a Yellow Lab? Why is it the Jindo's fault. He is not to blame here. His owners are. Perhaps you anger should be dirrected towards them and not the dog!
