Sex offender dies in home invasion

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police say a registered sex offender is dead after breaking into a home on the northwest side.

Authorities say 52-year old David Meyers broke into a home near 79th and Michigan and tried to rape a 17-year old girl. Officers say the suspect broke in through a window next to the girl's bedroom.

According to police, the intruder had a knife, and wasn't wearing clothes except for a mask and latex gloves.

Police say when the girl's father heard her scream, he put Meyers in a choke hold until officers arrived. When police got to the scene, the suspect was not breathing. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Police say they do not know yet exactly what killed Meyers.

Officials say David Meyers once served ten of a 20 year sentence for criminal confinement and sexual deviate conduct in Hamilton county. Meyers was also wanted in Boone County for failure to register as a sex offender.
