Dog wetting the bed

My brother's dog Lucy is a lab/greyhound/? mix (at least that's what we think). She is not quite a year old yet. The other weekend when Zoee was there they noticed pee spots on the floor and weren't sure who did it, Lucy or Zoee. Well, after Zoee left they discovered Lucy was going potty while she was asleep.
Has anyone ever experienced this? And is there a way to help stop it?

They just found her at the end of January, so she's been to the vet regularly to be checked and get caught up on all her shots. There isn't blood in it, and it's only when she is sleeping that it happens.

First thing's first. Is she spayed? If she is it could just be incontinence.

Also, she is still young and possibly still learning how to fully control her body.

Ok, no blood. Probably not a UTI, but doesn't hurt to have it examined at the vet's just to be sure. (Have they talked to the vet about this?)

My Rat Terrier was also a bed wetter in her sleep. (I can't offer you much advice though as my parents hardly ever took her to the vet besides for yearly shots.)

After we figure out what it could be then we'll probably all get to solutions.

She is spayed. And just recently too. I'm sure they haven't talked to a vet about it. That's why I came here to ask, and if I thought it was something serious I'd advise them to call the vet. Next time I talk to them I'll ask if she's still doing it and suggest they just call the vet and ask about it.

Well if it does turn out to be incontinence there are many different options.

There are several different medications. The one that Koli was just put on seems to be the safest of the three categories from what i've been reading. (see her topic for more info.)

The one person mentioned plain simple exercise cleared her dog's up. Now I'm not saying your brother's family is neglectful or overfeed Lucy, but i tend to notice that many lab owners don't give their dogs enough exercise. That and they have the extra challenge of not over feeding them as Labs seem to be chronically hungry/snacky/ having the munchies. I know she's a mix, but there's the possibility of the lab playing a role here. I don't know. I'd have to meet her and her family. ...I'm just tossing ideas out here. The exercise would both strengthen the muscles as well as loose extra fat. However you did say it was a recent spay. I've heard of some dogs leaking for a few weeks after the surgery. and also they have to keep the dog calm and not let it be too active. :rolleyes: Stuck between a rock and a hard place until she's fully healed.

And then there are also herbal treatments instead of pills. I will be trying them in the future. I've looked all over for personal accounts on these products but no one on any of my boards have tried them. (I'm wondering if anyone could ask their holistic vet about it for me. I know we do have a few members that use holistic vets.)

Wow, thanks for all the info. I tend to think Lucy is not under exercised. She has my youngest niece (13) that always runs back and forth to the neighbors (my parents) and they swim just about every weekend.
Now, I haven't looked at Koli's thread yet, but when you say "leaking" I tend to think of just a little bit of urine. This is like a full bladder being released with Lucy.
But again, thank you for sharing your knowledge with me, and I will read through your thread. :D

If a full bladder is being released then you have a possible house breaking problem. Just a drop of urine left behind can be a sign post to scent mark for some dogs. Total cleaning deordorizing the accident is important. Possibly more frequent trips outside is a solution. Alternatively there could be a congenital abnormality in the UI tract, an ultrasound may pick up.

Oooh I just picked up the swimming part... when I take mine to swim, I play the game of trolling for treats. I throw out threats that they fetch (eat), and in the process gulp down water. They are extremely well hydrated when we reach home. The result is that I have to take them out about 4-5 times in the next 2 hrs, else it's wee wee on the floor time. So check to see what is happening during the swimming trips. ;)

dragondawg, I'd agree with the housebroken part except that it's ONLY when she's asleep. She's never had an accident while awake since they got her.

And the swimming part....that's an interesting thought. I'll have to mention that one. I'm not usually there when they go swimming, but I'll have to ask about that. Thanks! :D

She sounds to young to have developed the "old lady" problem that I have experienced in older, spayed females, but she could be an exception. There is a hormone treatment available that saved us and my parents, on two older females, Murphy and Scout. I'll be darned if I can remember the name of it, though. Both of them developed the exact same problem in their later lives and were both spayed. It was a concotion that my vet had made to his specifications and one capsule each day (if I'm remembering correctly) took care of it for us.

I would just keep pounding your vet to try and find the right resolution to the problem. I just know there is an answer out there. And if any kind of kidney or bladder problem has been ruled out, perhaps they can get her on some hormone therapy. If you need me to check with my vet to find out exactly what it was that he was providing for Murphy and for Scout, let me know. Scout stayed with me, periodically, and their own vet didn't have the meds that Dr. Robinson (my vet) provided for her. Her problem occured while she was with me and he agreed to keep providing the medication for my parents, even though they were 3 hours from here.

My Layla is incontinent. It started just before her spay. She only does it in her sleep but did dribble sometimes when awake. We tried Qxybutin but it was no help. She is on Diethylstilbestrol. Layla was only having these 'wet spots' 10-12 times a month. She is almost one year old.
Your brother should contact his vet about Lucy. I was told sometimes this could be temporary after being spayed. In Laylas case, it was not.

Thank you chocolatepuppy. I just called my brothers house to ask about Lucy. Only my niece was home and she said Lucy hasn't had an accident in a while. So hopefully she's stopped. But I will ask each time I talk to them to make sure it's not still happening.
