They can be, but it's a much harder surgery--harder for the vet, harder on the dog, more risk of complications and therefore much more expensive. The price is often doubled at least!
some vets prefer not to spay when a dog is in heat..it can be risky why is Coco in heat??
she isnt in heat yet, but she should be real soon! im trying to come up with the money to get it done before she does come into heat!
Applauds you for being a responsible dog owner. (spaying Coco)Quote:

Your vet should be able to tell you how long after.
well, I am glad to hear that! :)Quote:

Weird. I've always heard after their first spay.. lol
Since the original question has already been answered, I thought I'd comment on the 'before/after is better' thing. I personally don't believe it's better either way, I prefer to do it after their first heat and at around 18 months of age....that's me. Others prefer to do it before, and since watching a dog like a hawk can be a difficult task for some owners when their dog is in heat then it is usually recommended that a dog be spayed before. That, and every heat they have, the risk for certain cancers rise, but that doesn't concern me as I personally don't feel the risk increase is that big.
I agree. that's just my opinion though. :)Quote:

Minnie got spayed two weeks ago. we went to pick her up and the vet asked if we knew that she was in heat. We didn't. They spayed her anyway while she was in heat and she was fine (we just had to keep her away from male dogs for a week because the hormones hadn't adjusted yet and she still smelled like she was in heat)
If that were me, I would of been upset that they didnt' call and let me know, so I could make the decission if I wanted to add the extra risk! :(Quote:
