Happy 16th birthday, Handsome Nanook! :)

Today is an extremely special day, as you already know (thank yous so very much) my boy turns 16 today! The vets & I thought we'd never see this day come. 4 years ago they gave him one year to live due to numerous health problems (that's a whole nother story though, this is a happy thread). Yet his zest for life keeps him going strong day after day after day after day. If anyone can show you how to live life to it's fullest it's my Nooker Bean. I've never seen a dog with such high spirits despite other things that may normally come in the way of leading such a happy, full bodied life. Even on his bad days he's still very happy and alive. He's been there for me through thick & thin as I have been there for him. I couldn't ask for a better partner and I hope he says the same about me. We've experience so much together, learned so much, cried & laughed. I can't imagine my life without him.

It was April 20th 1991 when my father & I went looking for a canine companion for me after striking out with the newspaper adds for what seemed like weeks on end (my reward for doing so good in school, and my father was probably sick of hearing me talk about nothing but dogs for a few years straight). It was at the end of the day, on a Saturday with only one shelter left to check. I was 14 so of course I wanted to get a dog right then & there, and if you knew my father you knew to take him up in his offer asap, who knew when that offer would expire. lol Anyways we were walking down the last isle of kennels, my hopes for finding "that one" were slim when all of a sudden something caught my eye. There was a beautiful white shep mix at the very end on the left side, dancing with one of the staff members. I knew that was my dog. As I approached the cage I said softly, "Nanook" and he stood up on his hind legs, looked right at me & barked. Yup, that's my boy, smelling like skunk or not he was mine! After spending some time with him I knew it was destiny. My father filled out the paper work while I gave him some lovins. I noticed on his kennel sheet that he has been there for 3+ months, well over his time limit. I looked a little further down & see in green print, "scheduled for euthanasia, 4/22/91 8:00 AM". Which was 2 days away but they were closed on Sunday so technically he was one day away from deaths door step. My dad returned to the kennel, I knew the paper work was final but there was a catch, we had to wait until Monday as he had to be licensed before he left. It was the longest weekend in my life but well worth the wait. We were back up there Monday morning (4/22/91) before the doors opened to pick up my man. He's never left my side since. I remember that day like it was just yesterday.

I've got more to say but it's Nook's day, I'm going to spend as much of it as I can with him.
I'll leave you with some pics for now and there will be more to follow tomorrow as well as next week. As part of his birthday present he will be spending a day at the park this weekend, we'll have a picnic, wade in the water & just sit back & watch the world go by, just him & I, possibly other peoples but no other doggies, he's old, he likes his alone time. lol Another part of his present is spending the day at work with me today, just him & I.

My dad just stopped in with some Mc.Donalds burgers just for Nanook, I didn't even get any. lol

Sue you have me in tears. I never knew that he was that close to being put down when you got him. It was certainly fate that you went int that kennel on that day to find such a special companion. Give that Nooker Bean some extra special hugs and kisses from me!

You not only got a beloved fur kid but you saved his life. Such a beautiful story.
