Roth has owies :(

Well our poor big guy is for the most part wearing his 11 years well.... he has put on 11lbs over the winter which is not altogether a bad thing but we had to get him in to get his lumps checked.

He has several fatty lumps that the vet is not to worried about, but he has 2 others that are of concern..... one one his neck which may be a lymphatic mast cell tumour and another by his right kidney which the vet say will be messy if she goes in to take it out .... she does not want to play with that one given she knows she will not get clear margins around it.

We had his bloods done as he will have to go in for a removal of the lump on his throat and biopsy which is not what I had hoped for but at 11 years old I guess these things happen.

Also Roth loves his raw hides. but recently I noticed he has not been going at them with the usual vigor, i checked his teeth and found although for the most part his teeth are great, no build up of tartar etc the poor guys has chipped 2 molars one one each side of his mouth sooooo guess who has to have 2 teeth pulled also ....poor guy.

So in the next few weeks he will be going in to get fixed up.... and he will return home looking like a toothless frankinstein poor guy.

If the lump on the throat is confirmed as mast cell, and if there is evidence of metastasis you should inquire about Chemo. Without looking it up believe Vincristine+Cytoxin are the drugs of choice. Regardless whether Chemo is an option or not for you, if mast cell is confirmed, then start giving the dog benedryl daily. Anti-histamines are thought to slow down mast cell cancer. At the very least they will make the dog feel better (e.g. mast cells release histamine).
