Dearest Pjevs, the Loyal Back Yard Guardian for many years for Randi and John,
has sent word to Randi that it's Time ...

Time to drop in at the Bridge for a Howdy with Jonza ...
Time to rest his weary feet ...
Time to become a Bridge Angle.

I'm sure Randi will find the strength to say a few more words ...
but She and Sus (Susanne), and the other couple who assist with feeding and
caring for Pjevs; gathered to discuss what would be best for poor ole Pjevs.

In Randi's words:

"The other day, we noticed that Pjevs couldn't walk properly and found out that his nails have grown too long. It has been rather difficult to look at them before, but I took him up yesterday evening and put him in my bathroom. I washed him a bit with a wet cloth and dipped his paws into the sink with warm water.

After he had relaxed a bit, I could get a closer look and it's not a pretty sight.
It must be painful. http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif
He also has problems with his teeth, and he is at least 14 years old -
and could be 16-17.

I arranged to meet with Susanne (Sus) and the couple who also feed him, this afternoon.
Considering his age and everything, we decided it's best he is put to sleep.
I'm so sad! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

I have given him half a Romefen (painkiller),
unfortunately, I can't get more until Monday, vets are all closed.
In the meantime, I'll make him as comfortable as possible.
He's in my bathroom now, eating his favourite food.

Please send Pjevs some good thoughts."

I'm not doing any better now than I did when trying to write to Randy this afternoon ...
bad case of LES.

Here's a few *snappies* collected over the years by Randi and John of Pjevs
in their back yard ...

Have a Safe Journey to The Rainbow Bridge, Pjevs ...

John will meet you the minute you step off the Cloud.

Please keep watch over Randi and Fister.

With All our Love,
/s/ your Friends at Pet Talk.
-------------------------------------------------

Dear Randi ~

We offer you our deepest sympathies and will be with you in spirit when
Pjevs takes his final journey.

Some of us would like to help with the final costs to insure that the Vet
assists and insures a comfortable journey;
and then performs a proper cremation ...
Pjevs deserves to rest forever near his Back Yard Villa;
and I'll bet John will appreciate some Pjevs Ashes being sprinkled around his HeadStone across the street.

Give Pjevs a Final {{{HUG}}} from me.

Oh Randi, I'm so sorry. :(

Pjevs knew he was loved, and making this final decision for him has shown just how much you do love him. Yes, John will be happy to see him, and I'm sure he'll be happy to see John again too.

Have a safe trip, Pjevs. You will be missed. :(

{{{Hugs}}} to you, Randi. I know how hard this is, but try to take comfort in knowing he had a good long life, mostly due to you, Sus and his other guardians.

Randi, I don't know you or Pjevs...but how wonderful that this yard kitty is so loved and cared for! His life with his extended family there was rich and full.

I know the vet will confirm your decision is the right one...I wonder what the matter is with the poor old fellow?

He is a gorgeous and handsome boy!

Play hard at the RB, Pjevs!

Oh, Randi! :(

I'm in tears. Sweet Pjevs was always a favorite of mine. What a handsome, elegant cat.

I'm terribly sad to hear this news but am incredibly thankful you, Sus, and the others were there for him until the very end. Thank you for providing for this gentleman, thank you for looking out for his well-being, thank you for sharing him with us. (One of my favorite photos was a "belly shot" - he was enjoying a good roll on the ground.)

Pjevs, it was a pleasure to know you. Rest sweetly now, little one.

Randi:
I sit here at Gini's place in tears. Somehow, it doesn't seem appropriate that I'm having such a good time while you are undoubtedly falling apart. :( :( I feel the pain that envelopes you now and I wish there was something I could do or say to take it away. Pjevs is at peace now.....a young cat....strutting his stuff in front of all the ladies. RIP dear boy. I wonder if you ever knew how truly loved you are???

To Randi, Susanne, and the others who thoughtlessly took the time to care for Pjevs:
God bless you all....

Pjevs - I know Kissy was waiting for you when you arrived at the RB - he has been there for a few months now, so I am sure he will do a great job showing you around.

Randi,

I'm sitting here sobbing right now because Pjev looked SOOOOO much like a feral cat, Shadow, that I fed in a drug-ridden neighborhood. He lived a long time and I miss him so.

RIP Pjev. You were a handsome boy and truly loved. Godspeed to the Bridge, dude.

Last night I dreamed about Pjevs. He was with me and Eddie and Edwina....napping between the two of them on my legs. All three wre curled up together and Edwina was washing Pjevs head.

Pjevs was loved and cossetted so much. I think of him as a rather eccentric guy who preferred the outdoor life...as long as it wasn't too far from his indoor friends.

Godspeed Pjevs.....

Pjevs was taken to the vet hospital sunday and put to sleep. :( I’m still in tears and can't talk on the phone. The other couple that fed him and I, took the decision that is it was best for him.

After we noticed he had problems with his front paws, I took him up in my bathroom. He ate his favourite food and I gave him the rest of the Temptations. He used the litter box - and he even jumped up on my chest of drawers himself, where I had put some soft blankets. I sat and cuddled with him and when he was relaxed enough, I tried to get a closer look at his paws. I filled the sink half full of warm water and held him carefully, dipping his paws in the water to get the dirt off. I did this a few times, letting him have a break in between. At least three nails had grown into his skin. :( I had given him one of Fister’s leftover painkillers.

Since it was weekend, all the vets were closed, so I called the vet hospital which unfortunately is quite far away, when you don’t have a car. They would also charge double at weekends, DKR 1300,- to put him to sleep.

Sunday, I rang Falck animal ambulance. They asked whether someone owned Pjevs, or if he was earmarked. I told them he wasn't and they said they'd send a car for him. They would take him to the very same hospital I had called and it would not cost anything because he was considered a wild cat. It is the same hospital where Fister got his operation, and I know they are very skilled vets and nice people, so I said yes, thank you. They came two hours later.

I could have taken him to my own vet monday, but I didn't want him to suffer for another day and also, I could not face seeing him go.

Pjevs was left in our backyard by someone who moved out before we moved in in 94. He slept in an old pram then. A few of us started him feeding him every day and have done since. We also built a house for him. He used to hang around with Fister’s mom and and a few other kitties there. The tree he used for climbing up on the roof of the dustbin shed has been cut down.

In the last few years, he was the only one left and I noticed he got smaller, that happens when a cat grow old. Also, this summer when he was fed during the day, the birds would try to steal his food, and he didn’t seem able to chase them away. :(

Pjevs was the sweetest boy anyone can imagine!

Rest in Peace my dear sweet Pjevs, you will always be in my heart and never be forgotten! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fister/Photoshop/Heart-lille.jpg

Oh, Randi and Fister,
I am just stunned to read about Pjevs. He was one of "my" tuxie kitties in my heart. I often thought he looked so much like my RB Tex. I am so sorry to know he is gone. What a wonderful, loving, humane thing you and Sus did for him at his final time, and how wonderfully the community family was for him during the last 12 years. May he rest peacefully at the RB. I hope my boy Tex was there to greet him, and show him around. I know they will be fast friends.

Please give my best to Fister, and take care of yourselves.
Love,
Johanna

to include me when you post your support for Randi! I know that you mean well - but it is really not necessary, since I wasn't much involved in the caretaking of Pjevs. All I ever did was to feed him 6 times when Randi visited California last year.

I meant to stay out of this thread because I strongly disagree with Randi on the way this whole "Pjevs affair" has been handled.

However, when I read the sweet and supportive words from Cataholic:

What a wonderful, loving, humane thing you and Sus did for him at his final time

I just couldn't take it anymore, and I felt that I had to break my silence. It was indeed a humane decision that Pjevs was put down this last sunday, and I was most certainly in favour of that decision.

However, in my view this decision was WAY overdue, and that is why I felt bad about the "loving, humane thing". The humane thing would have been to take him to the vet or have him put down six months ago when I pointed out to the yard group that there was something wrong with his paws and teeth. :( :(

In my view the yard group failed their responsibility towards Pjevs, because none of his caretakers wanted to adress the tiresome issues of how to get him to the vet and who should pay.

I think I owe it to Pjevs - who was indeed a right "trooper" that the truth be told in order for us to learn something from his sad demise. In my view taking care of a yard kitty - or any other "wildlife" for that matter - is not just down to feeding them once a day. You have a responsibility to see that they are healthy - and to intervene when they are not, and you have a doggone responsibility to make that awful last decision without too much hesitation when they are too old, too weak or too sick to fend for themselves. And claws grow, you know, on old yard kitties too. This should never be forgotten.

I'm sorry, but those are my views.

Lots of love,
Sus and Bella

I cannot imagine adding to the grief Randi must be under right now. February is probably a horrid month for her to venture through. However, I must address Sus' comments. I can only hope it is the language translation that makes me read your post harshly towards Randi.

All of us struggle with the ultimate decision to end the suffering of one of our loved ones. Knowing/loving a pet for as long of a time as Randi, and perhaps the other yard people did can make the 'hard face of reality' difficult to address. Often, we wish/hope/pray that what we 'see' isn't what is real. And, who can truly know when the time is most right?

I will continue to believe that Pjevs went to the RB when his time was right. Whether that was a month or two shy of what was 'perfect' is behind him now.

We have long maintained a silent agreement that memorial posts are off limits for any sort of bashing. I am quite saddened to see the unspoken rule broken here. :(

Oh no, just found this post..

Dear Randi, I am all in tears here. I know how much you loved this guy and how good you and John took care of him. I still remember how hard you tried to save him few years ago, when some other tenants wanted Pjevs to go, because they said that he peed in the sand-box of their kids... :(  . I was so happy when you were allowed to keep him there and feed him!
I am so sorry to hear he is gone now http://users.pandora.be/bernardgabriels/images/smilies%20953%20crying.gif . I have no doubt you did exactly what you had to do!!

Godspeed to the RB, dear Pjevs!! Your pawpie John will be most happy to see you back!! Don't forget to say hi to my Sydney; please tell him how much I miss him... .

I wasn't on PT when Pjevs first appeared, so don't know his history - how ill he had become or what.

It sounds like his nails had grown into his paw pads...and he was old. I didn't have the whole picture of what was wrong with him, as you close to him did.

This is a very emotional time for all his caregivers. He was a beautiful boy, and loved by many seen and unseen.

My prayers to all.
