Tamara, after reading one of your posts in another thread (it broke my heart) I'm so sorry to hear that your having such a hard time sleeping. Of course I can't say I blame you and can't imagine what it would be like to be in your shoes.
I'll always be thinking of you and hoping that Delta's fate isn't what you fear and that some how someone took him in and he's safe and sound. Please don't blame yourself, it is not your fault.

I read that thread also Tamara. It had me in tears. Remember when Diamond was hurt at the baseball field? I felt so bad, I felt it was my fault. You replied to me telling me it wasnt my fault that things happen sometimes. Its the same with Delta, it wasnt your fault please dont blame yourself. There is no doubt how much you love your dogs and how well they are taken care of.

I'm so sorry you cant sleep. You have been in my thoughts each and every day. (((Hugs)))

These touching passages were lost in another thread and deserve to be seen here,
where they have relevance to Delta and show Tamara's deep love for her Missing Pet.

Delta has been gone a long time, 22 days to be exact.
The odds of him coming home now are extremely slim.
I will forever have to live with the fact that because I didn't triple check that stupid gate, an innocent creature who I adore, paid with his life. I will forever be haunted by the fact that the last hours, maybe days, maybe even weeks of his life were spent alone, afraid, hungry, cold and possibly in pain. In all likelihood he died a horrific death in the jaws of predator. I haven't slept without medication since the day Delta disappeared. The image of him running into a wolf makes sleep impossible. I will never forgive myself for not doing more to socialize him. If I had, maybe he would have been brave enough to find his way home or let someone else catch and bring him home.

The only comfort I can find is that I did everything I possibly could to bring him home. I continue to look, search and advertise for him, despite the long odds of any success. I don't even get to mourn him properly because there is no closure in missing. Delta was only 4. I will spend the next 10 years, potentially his life span, looking at every black and white husky cross I see, just in case.

Tamara ~

Try to hold onto the hope that Delta will return -
we're all Praying that he WILL come home.

NO one, especially God, blames you for his being lost - try to put that thought
out of your mind.

Tamara, I lost my one and only dog because someone in my family did not close the gate properly.

Actually we lost two dogs the same day.

Did I blame this person? No, how could I? We are all human and we all make mistakes that later we regret.

My heart goes out to you, but please, don't beat yourself up - your other pups need you and love you.

I will continue to pray.................for Delta and for you.

Thanks, Phred and everyone else. I am trying. Some days are better than others. I miss the little goofball terribly. I thought I didn't interact with Delta much since he was so hard to handle, but since he vanished, I've noticed some gaping holes in my daily schedule that were his time. He may not have let me pet him very often, but we interacted in lots of other ways every day.

I'm still looking for him, calling his name ect. Whenever I go somewhere, I check to make sure his posters are still up and I renewed the newspaper ads today.

Thank you again. Your support has been invaluable to us.

You are one of the most compassionate, caring people I know, of course this wasn't your fault. And Delta may well be doing fine on his own, try to envision him curled up snoozing peacefully, or standing on a rock, looking around. You might see him again, you don't know that anything bad has happened for sure. All you do know is that he's on his own right now. He probably doesn't think he's "lost." I'll keep praying for his return, of course, and that you can find some peace of mind. :)

When searching and searching my heart for something to say to you Tamara. I basically seem to be at a loss for words. I just hope you know how much I respect you and how much all Pet Talkers respect you. I personally don't know how you do what you do and without complaint. I find it difficult to give my two dogs enough attention so I certainly can't fathom giving enough attention to 20+ dogs. I know your heart breaks right now and mine breaks for you. It's easy for me to tell you not to let this bother you but being the person you are, I know this isn't possible for you. I still pray for Delta to return every day and pray for you and Stuart to have the tremendous strength you need to get through this. God Bless you both and I'll keep hoping and praying that that handsome boy returns home soon.

Such terrible news. I check daily hoping for his return.

Is there a way you can put up reward posters? Might incourage strangers to get off their butts & catch a stray that has been hanging about.

Also, where was Delta origionally found? Maybe he's gone back to his old home area? Maybe hes joined a pack of wolves or wild dogs? I've seen it before. esp if they lived in the wild for such a long time at a young age.

I hope you get your baby back

All the posters we have up say reward offered in huge red letters. I added Large Reward offered to the new newspaper ads.

Delta wasn't a stray originally. He was bred by an idiot who thought it would be easier to breed his own dog team, rather than calling any one of the many ads always in the papers giving away trained sled dogs. He bred one litter and decided that dogs were way too much work. He found homes for the puppies except Delta and Antare. They were born with some genetic shyness(their mother was timid). People don't adopt shy puppies very quickly. So until they were about 4 months old, they had food thrown at them and that was it. No socialization, no efforts to overcome the genetic shyness. At four months, the shelter had room for them. They stayed there until they were almost a year old. That's when they came to me. Took an hour to get Delta out of the truck that first day. He was frozen stiff with fear.

I can't see him joining a wolf pack, but he would definately hook up with other dogs roaming if he could. He's very good with other dogs and prefers them over people.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too much, but my own have just been restored so I'm posting!

I just checked the messages at home and there was someone calling about my lost posters. I called him right back, of course. From the description he gave me, Delta is in his area. A dog matching Delta's physical description, with a collar and tag just like his on, who is so skittish this guy can't near him & who is making friends with his dog, has been hanging around his place for a week. The area is a good distance from our house, but it's also on the main trail system--where I and many other mushers train. This nice man has been feeding the dog, hoping he could gain his trust. He just went to get his mail and saw my poster. I taped them to all the rural mailboxes I could find. I left him my cell number and he's going to call as soon as he sees Delta again. (I'm assuming the dog is Delta because that's what my heart wants to believe.) I'm at work, but I have permission to run out if he calls.

Please keep those prayers coming, paws crossed, whatever...just maybe they are working.

Phred had the right idea -- since Delta is so shy, you should set a trap for him!

One of our dogs had been a stray living on her own for almost 3 years (which we learned later after having first spotted her). The little black dog had "taken up residence" at a huge trucking terminal a mile from our house. The truckers all tried to befriend her and took turns putting out food, but no one could ever get within 30 feet of her. The truckers told us she considered the terminal her home, though, and lived around and under the trucks and trailers -- spring, summer, winter and fall.

When I first saw her, it was during the bitter cold winter of 2002-3. I couldn't bear to see her suffering in the cold (she was a short haired dog, too!) and like the truckers, I had no luck at all getting close to her. So we hired a professional trapper to set a large trap in the area she frequented most often. I baited the trap with fried liver, and in two days, during a blizzard, she went in for the food and we caught her.

It is very likely that a trap would be the most positive way to catch Delta. When dogs get as skittish as he obviously is, trying to coax them to you can sometimes scare them off and you might never see them again.

PS: The little black dog is now our beloved "Sweetie". In the last two years, we have borrowed the trapper's trap and used it to catch two more stray dogs, one of which we kept. Neither was "on the run" as long as Sweetie, though. They were all lured into the trap with fried liver.....dogs simply cannot resist the smell of fried liver! I highly recommend it for bait!

Phred had the right idea --
since Delta is so shy, you should set a trap for him!

It only >sounds like< a good idea.

I'm sure Glacier (Tamara) is giving a lot of ideas serious consideration;
but the most important thing right now is NOT to frighten Delta to the point
that he "moves on" to what he thinks is a safer or less stressful location.

If he's comfortable hanging with the Neighbor's Dog and eating when / where / what
the ND eats - that's a BIG step towards a return to civilization!
If The Neighbor could snap a photo to use in confirming it IS Delta ...
then some plans can be formed to try and "capture" him.

A standart "live trap" - no matter how *yummie* the bait inside - may still
look and smell too human for Delta to approach.
(AND - there's a great chance of catching Neighbor Dog! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif )

For the short term;
just keeping the dog we are Praying *IS* Delta content so that he STAYS where
he is and becomes comfortable at ND's "House" will be welcome progress.

Prayers Continue that this IS Delta!!

It's HIM!! IT'S HIM!!!!!!!!!! We just got back from spending several hours out there. We saw him. It is absolutely, most definately, without a doubt DELTA!!!! Not only is he alive, but he appears to be uninjured. A little skinnier than when last seen, but not life threatening and no other visible damage at all!!!

We took his favorite dog house and left in these people's yard. We left the straw that smells like his buddies in it and I put a shirt of mine in as well. I took a bag of his food out too.

I got within a 15 feet of him. But he wouldn't let me get closer. He's very spooky and on high alert. No, Delta wouldn't come right up to me. Three weeks ago, when he saw me every day and was safely in his own territory, he wouldn't come right up to me and let me touch him. It's always been a process to catch him.

When we left, we hadn't seen any sign of him for over an hour. I suspect he got scared and went back to whereever he's been hiding. It was too dark to track him, even with headlamps on. I also didn't want to scare him off. Phred is right, I don't want him to move on again. He's at the last house on the last road for a long way. He's safe where he is, not as safe as he would be here, but safer than alot of other places. There's no major traffic(it's a small gravel road), no recent wolf sightings in the area, everyone in the area knows he is an owned dog and are trying to help. He won't be shot or anything like that. One woman has a dog team and he's been through her dog yard repeatedly. I told her if she catches him, I'll take one of her dogs home with me too--she tried to give me one already! She also has chickens. I told her if he gets in with them to slam the gate and I'll pay her for all the birds.

I'm going to see my vet in the morning. I want to ask him about a fast acting tranquilizer. Something I could hide in a chunk of meat that would knock him out fast. Animal control won't give us a live trap as the area is well outside of the city limits. I'm going to beg, whine and plead with them tomorrow too! Maybe they know someone else who has one or maybe they will consider giving me one for the weekend, since they are closed anyway. I'm asking my boss for the afternoon off. I'm supposed to be in a course all weekend, but I'm calling them too tomorrow. I'm sure there is a waitlist for it and someone else can take my spot.

Keep those prayers coming, PT. They are working. My boy is almost home!!

:D :D this is so exciting!!!! :D :D
Thank God he's safe! Only 15' away? Your heart must have been pounding!
Prayers continue, and good vibes doubled. Using a tranquilizer sounds like a very good plan, and Phred had a good idea, maybe there is someone with a tranqulizer gun locally?
:D Come on Delta, time to go home to your buddies & a good meal! :D

OMG I have LES and shaking all at the same time . I'm sending you a big Hug . WE knew he was a smart boy to survive alone so long. If he is comiing in so close it's a good sign he isn't as feral as you thought. Thats a good thing.

That is wonderful news! To get as close as 15 FEET shows that he's thinking about coming to you. It's tough to know how much food to offer him right now.....if he can have all he wants, he might be less motivated to give up his wandrin' ways.

Hoping for his safe return!

that is fantastic news!!

About the baited food. Is there a way for the owner to try to see how long Delta hangs around for while hes playing with the dog? Cause that'll also help in knowing what kind of med. to put in the food... A muscle relaxer might even work. The stuff the dr. gave me for my back, put me down in 10 mins.. I was awake, just really really relaxed :) When Max was stabbed, he had a muscle relaxer & was down for 3 days in a row... he was awake, just couldn't stand on his own or get up off the chair on his own... I'm sure your vet will give you some.

I hope you don't mind me give ideas...

Thank you, God! :)

Glacier, what about a tranquilizer GUN so next time you see him, you can do it and follow him until he's down?

What if you get the tranquilizer to put in a piece of meat and he grabs it and runs, or another animal gets it?

Wow, I just got home and read about the latest sighting! That's awesome. I hope you are able to get him tranquilized and safely brought back home, as he sounds impossible to catch if he's not in cage or something already. How nuts would that be if you ended up bringing another dog home?! Well, either way, I hope you're bringing Delta home soon!

Not knowing much about huskys and their traits, it seems so odd to me for a dog to want to stay in the woods and not come home. It almost seems humane to let him be in the wild. I know, I know, cats, dogs and all pets would also love to be out there......on their own.....and that would not work for them or me, for sure. I just get the feeling that this dog thinks he was meant to live on his own. Don't get me wrong, I still want him captured and sent home to Glacier, but there is something indicating to me that he is having the time of his life, "living large", if you will.

So, Delta, be a good boy and cooperate with Mom and Dad, and let them take you home to your buddies. Living large can get you in deep trouble.

when huskies get loose they run.....and run....and run. that's just what they do. it's not that he doesn't want to go home. huskies were bred to run and they have no homing instincts. this is normal husky behavior.

Delta! your so close to being back where you belong! :D come home! come home!

Delta had almost been a feral when Glacier got him.If you read about him in the begainng of the thread. He has never been a people oreinted dog. He is not like her others he trusts no one. So getting 15 feet if an excellent acheivement.
If you missed the other parts of the thread here are wolves in the area killing dogs in the dog yards so he is at a very strong risk of being hurt or killed .
Praying hard that he'll be captured thisweek end I like the drugging him idea much safer for you to transport him home. Please be careful, I know you and Stuart know that.

I think Delta is just too scared and has too many fear issues to do what he needs to do...having a dog with some issues of fear myself I understand completely. I doubt he is having the time of his life, I bet he is scared to death but doesn't know just what he should do.
