This is a game my son plays with my two cats, Indigo and Beauty. Whenever I am taking a bath, safely sheltered behind my shower curtains, my son plays an impish game with me and my cats. He knocks on the door, and I tell him to come in - I have a special signal, which acknowledges that I know it is my son, and I know what he is up to. He comes in, and I can see from the shadow on the shower curtain that he is depositing a cat on the floor. Usually the first one to be deposited is Indigo, our silent cat, who drops to the floor with, at best, a tiny pat of her paws. She then takes up her post on the commode seat. A bit later, I hear the knock again - and sometimes I hear "shushing" outside the door, as my son brings my second cat, Beauty, to be deposited in the bathroom. She usually makes herself known, though, because she is very vocal, and because she is larger, she makes a thump rather than a pat when she is put down. Then she takes up her post on the bathmat next to the bath tub, and in front of the heat register. Then my son challenges me to count the cats. Even when I correctly guess that there are two, he denies that there are any. And of course, when I push the curtains aside in order to get out (once having shooed my son outside), I see two pairs of cat eyes looking at me, as if to say, "Here we are again." I cannot imagine what they think of this game, but they do not protest. It is funny to see their expressions when I get out of the bath and find them there - always in the same places, always with the same attitude: "Here we are again." My son never seems to tire of this game, and I don't think the cats mind either. They seem resigned to it, and if anything, a bit puzzled as to what it is all about. But they don't really seem to mind, and it amuses my son no end. Games we play with cats!
