Poor Spikey...yesterday when I was feeding I noticed he just didn't seem right. When the vet opened at 8:00 a.m. Kevin rushed him down (thank goodness they take us anytime we show up). Anyway Spike's bladder was extremely enlarged and blocked. The vet said he was amazed we even caught this cause most don't until the bladder bursts (I know my cats :D ) He called yesterday afternoon and said when they put a catheter in his urine was full of blood. They found no stones or crystals and said he is doing fairly well. He will be there through part of next week. They have him on antibiotics and still on a catheter. Once they remove it they want to watch him for a few days to make sure he goes on his own. Here's Spike since I don't give him near enough exposure here.

Handsome Spike! Don't be worrying your purrents like that.
You know, when Rutherford blocked recently, that was when I found out that most blockages are NOT from stones/crystals, but rather mucus plugs (etc.)
So what will you need to do to try to prevent this from happening again? Did they say?
Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Spike was a bad boy at the vet (reason he's named Spike). He pulled his catheter out Saturday night and the vets found him this way Sunday morning. Luckily he did pee on his own during this time. They decided to leave it out to see if he continues to go on his own. Otherwise he's doing much better. :)

OY! Naughty boy!!! Glad he could pee on his own, though. Maybe he was thinking "HEY! I gotta pee! How am I going to do that with this THING in me??" ;)

Ha! Guess Spike figures he didn't need that anymore and just yanked it right out! Ha! Good going Spike, you had to go potty and that was in your way! I am glad to hear he is doing better and "going" on his own.

Oh Lisa, I am so sorry to hear he's blocked. I am currently going through my own blocking trauma here with Pouncer. I'll keep Spike in my thoughts and prayers today... thought it sounds as if he's back to his old self!
PS: Isn't it great knowing you KNOW your cats? (((hugs)))

My Max had the very same problem and exact symptoms you described a couple of years ago. He spent 6 days being an in patient before things righted themself. Thankfully no recurrence since but I do ask him persistently to 'let me know if the pee pees are hurting'. here's hoping for a speedy recovery for poor Spike and we wish him well, poor, poor boy :(

*Update* Spike will have to remain at the vets at least through tomorrow. Blood work came back with a high kidney count (which can be typical with this problem) so they want to run more blood work tomorrow to make sure it is going back to the normal range. They did say he's eating well and doing well though.

Kevin went to visit Spike last night after work. He said he's in a collar cause of his IV's. Said Spike gave him head bumpies and started purring. Kevin wished he had his camera, but since he stopped after work he didn't have it on him. I will update you all today and thank you so much for all your get well wishes! :)

Sounds like a classical FLUTD- because of no crystals and stones. I hope Spike boy is better soon. Tigris after his attack last year was fine --ok I knock on wood.
All the best for Spike. I hope his kidney count goes down after the antibiotics kick in.

The vet called again last night and said Spike's kidney levels are not coming down like they should be. :( He said he isn't giving us a grave diagnoses, but he's pretty concerned about the levels. They will see how he's doing today and get back to us. I thought we'd have him home by now.

1/11 - A.M. Update
Spike is getting a little better, but not to the satisfaction to release him home. They will run more blood work today and see how the levels look. Gosh this all happened so fast. One day Spike appeared just fine, and the next day he's in the hospital. I will try and visit with the camera this afternoon. Thanks everyone!

Oh no, poor Spike! My levels were all out of wack when I was in the hospital too, so I sure hope his levels come down so he can come home real soon!
What an awesome meowmie you are, Lisa, for paying such close attention to your babies. This would have been so easy for anyone to miss, much less someone who has......how many do you have these days? ;) :)

We're up to 24 - 25 (lost count) and you're so correct, it's hard to notice things when you have so many. How do you know which one deposited and didn't in the litter box? Which one is going outside the box, etc. Spike was named that for a reason :D he's an ornery, fiesty guy. He just seemed subdued that day and I'm glad I'm a worrier.

1/12 Update
Kevin just got off the phone with the vet and Spike is doing substantially better. :D His blood work is still not in the normal range, but much better. He's peeing on his own and will get to come home this afternoon! :D :D We will of course have to monitor him and administer antibiotics (which he is the worst cat we have for pilling). I think we've decided to go with liquid form. Then next week he goes back in for more blood work. Spike thanks you all for your well wishes, concerns, and thoughts (and we do to). Now lets just hope this doesn't reoccur!

Oh no, I'm glad he's home but I sure hope that helps perk him up a bit. Come on Spike! We know you have spunk because of your name, so time to bring it back sweetie. Hopefully being home and a good snuggle with the B's will help tremendously.
My Finnigan went through this about eleven years ago, I got him to the vet's just in time, he spent eleven days there with me having to go and feed him every day because he wouldn't eat for them, or drink. Up to the eighth day I thought I'd lose him, he was just hanging in there and then there was the improvement, a week after he came home and put on some weight again no one could have guessed that he'd been so sick.
It's really amazing what they can go through and survive.
Hang in there Spike, we're thinking of you! :)

Thanks for the info. Spike peed on his own this morning, although it wasn't alot, and ate a good breakfast. He's still walking very gingerly and pretty much stays in his bed. Kevin will administer his antibiotic this morning so hopefully that goes well. We're hoping each day shows improvement.
