He's halfway home....

And he doesn't have to worry about the straight away...

We'll carry him across the finish line. :D

There is ONE thing we all have to worry about.

His getting mauled when he gets home to the 'kids' :D ;)

Just got off the phone with the patient - he called here while I was out buying bunny greens.

He sounds better, says he *guesses* he feels better, still coughed a few times while talking to me, but otherwise his breathing seemed better - to me, anyway. His nurse for the evening came by and did the blood pressure/remperature thing while we were talking, blood pressure was a little higher than nrmal, but no too bad.

The dogs are at a boarding kennel for the weekend. It's run by a guy Phred knows - the guy's father-in-law is a former fire chief, so at least there's some connection and Phred trusts the guy. He hopes the dogs'll be good, I told him they're surely gonna regale him with their own tale of how abused they were when he finally gets home, but he knows not to believe most of it! (They really are remarkable good dogs, have been every time I've seen 'em, anyway, even if Smokey gets a bit vocal when he's not actually WITH Phred.)

Thanks for the uppydate Karen. So glad to hear the furry ones are being looked after so well...still, I'm sure it's on Phred's mind. Will be praying hard all weekend and especially Monday.

Be good Phred and and I'll check in on the weekend.

Thanks for the update, Karen. I'm so glad to hear Phred sounds better. :) Hopefully he'll improve each day! It's a relief that he doesn't have to worry about the doggies - though he probably is, a bit. Boots must miss them all. :(

I'm sending more positive and healing thoughts, and hoping the next update will be positive too.

I talked with the Patient a bit ago - he was giggling at my story of Kylie at the vet's and the story of my D-A-T-E last week. Told ME I should get out more!
Donna called him when I was on the phone so I went to hang up and there was a miscommunication and she hung up so he was left with talking to noone!!!
So Donna if you read this - CALL HIM BACK! ;)

Just finished my conversation with him, told him about your post, Gini, and he admitted that it IS an individual's prerogative, so he guesses people can worry if they want ...

And Mister Bear did get brought with him, so he has a little bit of Pet Talk spirit with him!

to locate another one! ;)

I got a phone call from Phred saying Laurie and co-pilot didn't make evening visiting rounds so of course the WorryWart Phred wonders where they are. He calls me to see if I have any of Laurie's phone numbers. "No I don't." I gave him Gini's number. So he is calling Gini to see if Laurie has a cell phone. I called a very very sick sounding Tonya to see if SHE had the number and no she sure didn't. So she gave me Slick's number so I called Slick and Slick said she doesn't have a cell phone! Soooooo Slick called Laurie's home and talked with daughter in law verifying that Laurie doesn't have a cell phone and then Slick called me back and left me a voice mail b/c my phone didn't ring!
So now on the phone with Phred telling him that they are prolly holed up in a hotel or at dinner somewhere.
Sooooo we are calling the WEST coat trying to locate two little people on the EAST coast! ;)

Boy, what some Pet Talkers won't do to track other Pet Talkers down. ;) I called Laurie's home and spoke to her DIL to see if Laurie had a cell phone. Anyway about 10 min ago, my phone rings and it's Laurie.

It seems that she was headed back to the hospital but made a wrong turn and when she saw a sign pointing her to New York, she knew something was very wrong. :D Anyway, she turned around and went back to the hotel where she and her co-pilot have just finished a wonderful dinner and now she's headed for bed.

She is going to see Phred again tomorrow morning before heading back home. She has some stories to tell so will let her post them tomorrow night or Monday.

He said to thank all of you for your ongoing good wishes and prayers. He feels they must be working - because he is better each day.

I think he is completely amazed that someone would drive six hours each way to visit just him. But that is our Laurie - isn't it?

Just talked to Phred, he signed 3 permission slips for different treatments, they're gonna see topmorrow when they start whether a stint will do, or he needs option 2(forgot what that was), or a wholesale bypass. That'll be at about 8:30 tomorrow that they come to get him, so prayers are in order for him to be able to sleep tonight, and that things go well tomorrow.

I believe option 2 is angioplasty - where they place a ballon in the artery.

Oh dear, I don't know which option to pray for! The stint and/or angioplasty would obviously be the least intrusive, but I know my dad had a stint put in, and less than a month later he had to have another one put in, then about 6 months later he needed another one, so they decided to just do the bypass and be done with it. After all he's been through already, I sure hope this isn't what's in store for Phred. However, both my mom and dad had bypass and it certainly isn't a walk in the park - if you know what I mean - although since then, they have both been doing great. So it's a toss up. Be laid up for awhile all at once, or feel good for awhile then start feeling not so good and have a few more scares....

Well, no matter what they find or decided to do, I hope & pray it's what Phred needs to get well once and for all and be able to go home!

Laurie, how wonderful of you to visit Phred! I just know it boosted his spirits a lot, and it sounds like he's doing better over all after last week's procedure.

Keep getting better Phred! :)

Phred called me at work about 20 minutes ago. Things didn't exactly go as he wanted them to, but "hey, I lived, anyway," he said. He is out of surgery, but they found some blockages angioplasty could not correct. He's to not move for the next 4 1/2 hours so the hole can fill in or "set" and then he'll be back in a room.

He does not know what will happen next, no one has divulged anything like that, and he's not in the position to chase anyone down and ask. They may send him home before the next "whatever will happen," we just don't know.

He says "Thanks for all the prayers, folks, and for caring."

I'll check back in much later in the day, when he won't be quite as doped up (his speech was a little slower, you could tell), and maybe will know more.

Well, just got off the phone with the patient for the evening. Today was a big disappointment - basically they went in, couldn't fix the blockages they found, and gave up. He's not positive what the game plan will be exactly, but there is part of his heart that isn't working at all, but they're tentatively planning on treating it with medicines. The woman discussing that breifly with him said that they may be able to regain almost all the functionality by treating it medically. There's been no talk of a bypass being an alternative at this point.

So he has no idea when he'll be sprung free, but is glad to be alive in any case, and promises to update us when he knows more of what "the plan" will be.

So glad he's got Mr. Bear with him. Mr. Bear even got to sit on Phred's chest for almost the whole time the other day for the kidney procedure, just had to "watch from over there" for the most serious part. It's nice that he has a little reminder that people here love him with him in tangible, hug-able form. Mr. Bear is now sporting his own hairnet, in keeping with his position as a medical assistant!

Phred thanks everyone for their prayers and their concern.

In between naps and nyquil, I've been checking this thread constantly. So glad to hear a "verdict" even though it's not exactly the "quick fix" we'd hoped for.

I can't help but giggle at the thought of the bear in a harenet. That thought, of course, is quickly sobbered by the fact that our phrend Phred still isn't "fixed" ... uh, that is... his HEART isn't fixed. (Best becareful and/or clarify "fixed" on a pro-spay/neuter board, right? :o )

How nice it would've been to try the non-invasive medicinal route BEFORE the surgery. But I guess, some things just aren't known until you get in there and have a look.

Cheers, Phred! My prayers and thoughts are still with you. Here's hoping your sprung from the whitecoats asap!

Yes, rather disappointing day, but things are still progressing. The procedure didn't get him all fixed up, but it sounds like it did give the docs a better idea of what they're up against so they know better how to proceed.

Still hoping and praying for the best!

Any hope of maybe Phred getting to go on a "field trip"? Even if it's only to outside the hospital? Then his friends can bring the trio by for a little reunion. Poor pups must be so confused as to what happened to their dad. :(

on the phone with disgruntled patient right now. He is rather disappointed with what happened yesterday but says that they are going to try to help it with medicine at this point. He might be a candidate for pacemaker at some point. I asked if he was able to have a bypass and he said that he wasn't sure about that b/c of the recovery time was extensive? Is this true? I have no idea. Just from your replies here it sounds as tho there are several people just here that know people that have had bypasses.
He said he would try to check in tonite to let me know if he gets released tomorrow. :)

Karen

Tell him we're all thinkin' of him! And my friend Edward lived for a long time with a pacemaker, my neighbor Charlie (former firefighter) did, too!

Logan
01-17-2006, 10:54 AM
I'm having problems understanding what a pacemaker and bypass surgery have in common. Bypass surgery corrects a blocked artery, right? Pacemakers regulate the heartbeat. Two totally different things. I'm sure Phred will set us all staright when he is back online. As long as his doctors have it straight, I'm not worried!

Bypass surgery does have a bit of a long recovery, Staci, as it is open heart surgery. My mother had open heart surgery for another issue and it was probably six weeks before she could really start functioning again.

Thanks for updating us, folks.

Not sure that the recovery time being extensive should rule this out if this is what he needs. Better to be functioning for the long run. I'm wishing that he could have been gone to a large teaching hospital. This whole thing breaks my heart.

She has ahd 4 heart attacks before the surgery. hers is from diabetes they thought 60% of her heart was dead but after more scans found the little veins had kept it alive. after the surgery she felt so much better that after 2 weeks (insistion healed) she started an water arobics class that was 3 years ago she iis now off of 15 meds and is teaching 5 days aweek the water arobics . She has lost 80 lbs and just hired a personal trainer for the lose tummy skin. we have a contest going on weight and inches. Shes now 67 years old and I have a hard time keeping up with her.
Fred does need to remember to that after a heart attck he may experiance memory loss it's just part of it. Mom is now getting it back help of supplements.

Just spoke to the patient. There was talk yesterday of him going home today. However, there hasn't been much happening today, one doc came in and adjusted one set of meds, the "main heart doc" who might have something to do with letting him go home is busy until late afternoon ...

Houston, we're in a holding pattern ...

Still in the holding pattern, looks like he'll maybe get to go home tomorrow, maybe this time for sure. Said he's been in a proverbial holding pattern so long he's gettin' dizzy! But he sounds a lot more chipper, anyway, which is good to hear.

He is still getting the e-cards, so we know the system is working!

The dogs, by the way, are back in doggie heaven at Unca Pat and Aunt Joan's house. What a reunion that will be, huh?

Phred hopes to be able to post something himself tomorrow!

St. E's Hospital should try runnning a Railroad - they might be better suited.

"You can go home today" started to be heard at 8:00 AM...

They were still getting doctor's to "agree" at 4:00 PM.

Not to mention getting disharge meds to agree with the Rx: forms!

4:15M - Pat & Joan ring my cell - where ARE you?
Nurse Tom suggestes we exit the back stairs- probably a 30 minute wait for
"Transportaton" to show up with the wheelchair!

Back steps take 10 minutes - and me *gasping* for air!

Pat Pilots - Joan Navigates ...

Aw, Phred, I am sorry to hear you still have the old can't-sleep problem. :( I know how bad that feels.
I have some ideas, suggestions, or whatever you want to call them .. even silly maybe, but here goes.

All those things are sedantary I know, but rest is what you need and they do/can occupy the mind, which may help.
If you like reading have plenty of books on hand, maybe that looong one you have always been meaning to get to.
If you don't like to read I do know you like to write, get all those wonderful 'tails' you have told us together into some sort of framework for a book ... you have a ready market right here on PT. :D
Get some films you've been meaning to watch, sit and enjoy.

Of course fresh air is important too, I know, but you can get that by sitting out on the porch - maybe throwing the ball for the furkids - and taking gentle strolls.
Instead of trying to get to sleep at normal times just nap when you can.

That's about all I can come up with right now, sorry if they sound daft but... :D

That sleeping thing must be terrible!! (I have never had that problem......I sleep "dead", can fall asleep in less than a minute, can be awakened  by the phone at 3 am, have a conversation and fall right back to sleep. )

(((((hugs)))))

Just checkin' in to see how the patient is. Good to hear that you had a power nap....those really do help. Hope you had a chance to get some serious zzzzz's in da big bed too!

Still sending prayers to you everyday.
