Cincy is, but we are working on it!! She has lost 7 pounds since April, last year.

Sadieand Spot are not.

Absolutley not! I don't think we could make him fat if we tried! Such a picky boy, he gets tired of eating a certain treat every once and a while.

Nope, not at all! Even if I did overfeed them, my two are soo energetic they'd burn it off, anyway. They could probably use more to eat, actually ;)

Winston could stand to lose a few pounds in my opinion, my parents (mainly my Dad) don't think so. Plus, he's their dog so I can't do a whole lot about it (except make sure he gets enough exercise). He's finally on a diet though, hopefully that'll help him. He really only needs to lose about 5-7 pounds.

I'd consider the others to be in pretty much perfect condition. Honestly, I don't think Tango could ever become overweight. She's a very picky eater and every time I feed her I have to sit with her and make sure she eats or else she'd probably starve herself...

Yes i have to admit it both my kitties are and were not when i got them, and i do feel guilty about it, lexie is a much smaller cat in stature than Ash who is a large cat anyway, and is fast catching up in the weight department, however i do not feel i overfeed her, she has a small cup of biscuits daily, but i think they are high in fat because she sure has piled it on, Ash would be better off slimmer too as he is suffering from arthritis. :(

My 3 are perfect weights. Murph just trimmed off a couple of pounds in the last 6 months and it's definitely helping with his arthritis.

Zsa-Zsa's managed to retain a little middle-age spread, but she doesn't eat like she used to so she has shed a few lbs since her earlier years. Tia is fine, and Foxy may possibly be a little underweight, even though she stuffs herself silly with all the treats we give her:rolleyes: :)

LOL Katie's a little tub ball - I started buying her light dry food and it seems to be helping a bit. She has a belly on her. She loves her dry food, eats a little soft food a day, and doesn't care much for treats. Belle on the other hand, is a skinny little thing and her favorite time of day is feeding time ;) Funny how that works...Roscoe is at a pretty good weight right now, he was really skinny when we first got him but he looks much healthier now :D

Autumn could lose 3-5 pounds. She looks a lot fatter in a full winter coat but when the fur gets trimmed it takes off 5 pounds. Sonny is just a big tom cat.

Mandy needs to lose about 5 lbs but we are working on it. She has lost about 15 lbs since I started working at the vet, but these last 5 lbs are haaaard to get off her. Luka and Nova are the perfect weight.

What if they had a medical problem that made them that way? :(

What if they had a medical problem that made them that way? :(

Exactly, and that can be kind of difficult to control at times - most animals are not actually at a perfect weight, and neither are humans.

I can kinda-sorta agree with Cali, severely overweight dogs is a huge pet peeve of mine. If there is absolutely no medical reason for the dog to be obese than it really shouldn't...IMO...

My Shadow is overweight, a bit, but she is not obese. She could stand to lose a few pounds, and keeping all that weight on her is not healthy for her joints or general health at all. BUT another peeve of mine is dogs that are too skinny....like my Kyra. She does not eat well or consitantly and I absolutely hate it but there isn't much we can do. And Micki, he has arthritis really bad and has bad elbows, if there is very much extra weight on him it would make him even more uncomfortable so I have been trying to slim him down a bit. Jack is perfect to me, you can just feel his ribs if you take your hands down his sides but his backbone or any other bones aren't protruding or anything.

I picked both yes and no.
Unfortunately, Frisk is overweight. No matter how much I beg my mother and father, they insist that table scraps "won't hurt him". We're working with him, though. We've changed to a better dog food and walk him at least five times a week. We see improvement! :D
Ethan isn't the kind to gain weight easily, so he's not overweight. Actually, when we adopted him, he was still slightly underweight, but he's fixed that. Also, Ethan isn't the kind of dog that can eat and eat like Frisk can. If he eats just a little too much, we get to clean it up off the floor when he can't hold it down.

Well i have not purposely made my cats overweight, as I said before i do not overfeed them, they are just that way inclined IMO, maybe i could reduce their intake some, but like people they are all different and come in all shapes and sizes, gosh Cali if you feel that way about pets, how do you feel about overweight people then?

BitsyNaceyDog
01-03-2006, 09:12 PM
I don't really consider any of mine to be overweight. Charlie has gotten a bit stocky, but not to the point of being overweight. The others aren't at all even close to being overweight.

As for the kitties, Raisin is a big girl, but that is just her body type, she'll never be skinny, she's a maine coon mix. Justin calls her "fatty boombalatty". Jimmy is a big cat too, but not at all overweight. The others are all quite lean.

i think peopl are a bit different from dogs in that regard; because you would have to conciously feed a dog (or not put him/her on a diet) in order for him to be obese. a.k.a. the dog can't really do anything about it, and its obviously not realistic to expect a dog to refuse food in order to lose wieght. so i guess what i'm saying is that severely overwieght animals (excluding ones with health issues where it cant be prevented) are the result of irresponisble owners. my friend has a golden retriever who is morbidly obese, but still they continue to feed him steaks adn scraps from teh table adn just think its funny that hes that fat.

Cagney is overweight, I am most certainly NOT a irresponsible Pet parent, so that's not true at all. It isn't always just a simple, you feed too much your dog gets obese. Cagney is older, he doesn't like too much activity. Sometimes he will randomley stop eating so he needs to get table scraps. He's getting the same amount of food as he did when he was young, he just doesn't want to exercise much now. We can't cut down on his food because as it is he hardly eats any of it. And as carole said, they all come in different shapes and sizes.

There's a difference between an overweight pet and an obese pet. and like i said before, i was only talking about pets that didnt have any kind of health problem that would affect thier weight (getting older, artheritis, cant move well, and other more serious problems)

cali
01-03-2006, 10:37 PM
overwieght pets just drive me nuts, when it comes to animals I am a HUGE fitness freak, probably because I am invloved in so many dog sports, I am completly obbessive about keeping my pets trim, I honestly check every single day and if they are even an ounce overweight they are on a diet, and I make no exeptions to other peoples pets that enter my house, and I aint quiet about it when I see fat dogs in RL, I am always checking my friends pets too and raise a stink if they get overweight lol

Jessika
01-03-2006, 10:41 PM
Wlel how do you know just by meeting random dogs in Real Life whether their obesity has to do with overeating or if they have a medical problem? Otherwise its pretty rude to say something if you don't know the reason WHY they are overweight to begin with.

That's a bit odd.

If you see a overweight pet in RL how do you know if it doesn't have a health promblem? Going on a diet because they are an ounce overweight isn't very healthy.

gosh Cali if you feel that way about pets, how do you feel about overweight people then?

That's what I'm wondering

First of all, it's rude for you to sa that you wouldn't let a "fat" dog to set foot in your house but to go around in RL lecturing people about their obese dogs is awful! If someone did that to me about Cagney I'd be really upset!

Like i said before, Batman is is actually underweight, right now (he's just got over major illness/surgery) bu the's getting back on track to his right weight. I like dogs alittle bit chubby, well not chubby, more like sturdy and muscular rather than skinny

cali
01-03-2006, 11:08 PM
oh no if it is caused by a health problem I fully understand! but again I come from a sport dog background and I am very competive, I dont do it strictly for fun, I want to WIN, its just one of the things I am obbessive about, my dogs are not underweight, they are kept in sporting condition, I am slightly more leniant for dogs that are strictly pets, but I am obbessive about keeping dogs trim and muscular, I take my girls out to the bike path regularly and use the circles in the path to condition them, I ride super fast around the rings and have the girls run along side me(they are not leashed for this lol) they love it, it builds muscle, it tires them out, and it makes them faster. when my friends dogs stay with me or I am dog sitting them I give them a more apporiate amount of food, and walk them 3 times a day, plus take them for runs. I do nothing unhealthy the amount of food they receive is in direct relation to how much exersize they recieve. I would never ever feed a dog the same amount no mater how much exersize they get, that is exactly why so many dogs are overweight, you have to adjust it, not or how much exersize they are going to get but for much much they already had, if a dog did not get much much exerise you dont feed them as much as you would after a 4 hour run, that is how you keep weight in check. I dont lecture anyone about their dogs weight till I know more about them and their dogs, I lecture when people refuse to admit that their dog is fat or if they know their dogs is fat and really dont care.

as for fat people? I could not care less about people do it does not bother me a whole lot lol

**for informoretion my dogs are NOT strictly pets and never have been, Ripley is our one and only dog thtat we adopted as a pet, the rest were chosen specificly to be athletes, while we wont make the dogs do anything they dont enjoy , we did not get the dogs as pets then decide to try some sports for fun, we were already involved in dog sports and chose dogs based on this, the ONLY reason I got Misty was because Happy had retired from flyball and I needed a new flyball dog, I would never get ride of a dog for not being a good athlete, and my dogs are every bit as loved as dogs that are strictly pets, but you must remeber that this is the dog world that I grew up in, my mom has been invloved in dog sports since she was a teenager, I was raised in the world of canine athletes, and this is where my perspective comes from.

Star could actually stand to gain a pound or two. ;) Both of my dogs are trim, but not as fit as I would like them to be. Cupcake (the kitty) has started to gain a little weight since she's getting older and slowing down, but I asked the vet about it and he said she is still withing the healthy weight range, so we're keeping a close eye on her food intake to make sure she doesn't get pudgy.

Although sometimes I'm paranoid and try to convince myself they are, I really don't think any of them are overweight. Nebo looks skinnier in the summer and bigger in the winter but it's just that his fur gets thicker. I think his ideal weight is 60 lbs (which he's at now) he's been a few pounds over and under that before. I make sure my dog eats the best dog food and the right amount (he only eats 2 cups per day) but I don't seem to care what I eat. :o

I'm not obsessive about it but it does bother me when people let their dogs become obese...if it's a medical condition, that's understandable but otherwise...but no that doesn't mean I'd dislike the dog or the owner...and no, it doesn't bother me with overweight people (I'm one of them) dogs don't have a choice what they eat, we do. ;)

Well it is a little harder to keep cats fit and active, you can play with them but that is about it, both my cats are not obese, but they need to loose a few pounds, i have not intentionally made them that way, as i pointed out my younger cat has a small cup of biscuits a day which is recommended the right amount for her, and she has put on far too much weight, I will be looking into changing her biscuits even though she loves them as they are obviously high in fat.

Cali i do not think it is good to be obsessive about anything myself, moderation is the best.

She's looking a little pudgy, but people think she's UNDERweight...Honestly, folks, do your research before you blast me in public for my "underweight Greyhound". On the same note, please don't ever compare my Peke's weight to my Greyhound's weight :) Thanks.

Emily is a tad pudgy.. she needs to lose 1.5 pounds. Clipse is just right though.

Obese dogs are a pet peeve of mine too. I see so many at work and it makes me sad. We always try to say something to the owners about it. Nicely though of course, and we always suggest they talk to their vets about a possible medical problem.

Nikki is overweight at 15lbs. It wasn't my doing. Her idiot former owner just kept feeding her to keep her out of the way. With me, she's eating weight control food and I think she's lost a pound or two. Nikki also gets excersise by chasing Daisy around. I think of Daisy as Nikki's trainer! Daisy is at a perfect weight for her.

I think Roxey is just finally up to a perfect weight (60.2 lbs). I think this is the best she's ever looked. She's always been a little on the skinny side.

Bon, I think he too is at a perfect weight. No pudge in the belly and I can feel some ribs.

Now Huney, she's always been too skinny. She can eat any time she wants but chooses not to. Obviously she's eating enough but when she's wet she looks like skin and bones! But I must say this winter she's probably put on a couple pounds so she feels better.

I'm happy with all of their weights.

I said no, but I should have said yes. My fish are fat hehehe. I feed them TOO well :D
I don't over feed them, I just feed them a really good diet & since the fish decided to stay very still & stare at me ALL day they don't burn any energy  Now both of my fish can see eachother & the really fat one (Mango) tries to kill Jack ALL day long, so hes been loosing a lot of weight the past few days. Jack LOVES teasing Mango cause he knows Mango cannot get to him.. so hes been swimming more to piss Mango off hehehe

Axle my snapper, only eats ever 2-4 weeks & doesn't move much at this time of the year, so hes thin.. in the summer hes more active, & eats once a weeks so he puts on weight & grows about 5-10 every summer (which he doesn't loose during the winter)

Elvis has finally got down to a good sporting weight again, he looks pretty darn good at the moment and he is alot happier after loosing his little bit of extra holiday weight. Clover is doing well with her diet she has a little way to go, but like Elvis she is looking realy good.

The Cat is normal, i make her chase the dogs around the house lol, it is great exercise and she loves it.

Kai's overweight. I've been working on it for a long time now but it's sooo hard with him. He's afraid of pretty much everything.. it makes walking impossible. Heck, he gets spooked just staying in the backyard some times. It's my fault though. I didn't socialize him enough as a pup.. and now I can't walk him around most places. I tried feeding less but my family doesn't seem to understand that I'm feeding him less for a reason. They constantly give him extra food when I'm not looking.

As for Kaedyn, he could stand to lose a few pounds but he's not at all obese. If I ever get him into flyball or agility, I'd want him to lose a few pounds more on top of that.. just to be easier on his joints.

I bought some weight control food just recently, for this reason. Sam is definately overweight, he could stand to loose about 15-20lbs, honestly. His ideal weight is a little less than 90 lbs, and he weighs just over 105. However, he just turned 8 years old...he has slowed down quite a bit, and has never been very active anyways. Both of us, however, are getting out about 4-5 times a week and walking/running. I'm not in shape, and neither is he, so we're taking it slow.

Casey isn't really overweight, but she will be 7 in June, so the weight loss formula will benefit her. I don't think she would loose more than 3-4 lbs on it, and she might look a little better. Boomer could loose about 5 lbs and look gorgeous, he's very active, but he has a little pudge going.

I'm not totally against fat pets. However, I've seen a cocker spaniel that weighed 65 lbs, and a Miniature Poodle that weighed close to 50lbs, not because of medical reasons, but because they were overfed. The miniature poodle was not on any kind of dog food, he got whatever the family was eating for dinner.

But I think some pets are just happy being fat. :) If it gets to a point where it is dangerous to their health, then some action needs to be taken. However I would never go around and lecture every owner that had an overweight pet, or not let them in my house, that's kind of ridiculous.

The only one of my pets that could stand to lose a bit of weight is Oliver. He is not a bad weight, just a bit pudgy, though he has always been that way since he was a little baby. Tobias was the big boy at the time so I guess Oliver decided to make himself fat lol. I admit though, I have been a bit neglegent with out-of-cage time so he hasn't been getting as much exercise as he should. As soon as I move into my new place, he and Tobias will have run of the house when I'm at home so he should get back on track.

As for the rest of them, Caleb is alright, he's gotten pudgier since I moved out though. My mom feeds him more than I did. Tobias is the perfect weight as far as fat goes, but I'd like to see him gain some muscle. Visa is my problem child. She is the perfect weight now, but she's very difficult to keep that way. She's a picky eater and she has a ridiculously sensitive stomach (as practically every Belgian does). She is very lean with tons of muscle because of the amount of exercise she gets, so she has no trouble keeping muscle. It's just the fat. But once I put her on a RAW diet everything will get better. She will be much more inclined to eat and her body will absorb the nutrients better.

Our vet says that Taffy is a bit overweight but she weighs the same as the other cat Max I had two years ago which I had to put to sleep and he was never overweight and I know of a lady who lives in town and she finds homes for cats and she told me that Taffy is not overweight and she takes her cats to the same vet as I do.

I do have my two cats on a light cat food though as they are indoor cats just to be safe with their weights. They do get some treats too. So I don't worry too much about it as long as I watch the amount they eat and they do some play time.

NO WAY! I think it would be really obvious if my greyhound was even a tiny bit overweight. She has always been a skinny girl. Lucky.

A funny story:

I was at a dog park once and Jenny was playing with some other dogs when a boy {6 or 7 years old I'd say} came in with his mother and lab. I was sitting on the bench and didn't mind when he started chasing Jenny with his lab. After all, I thought, they'll never catch her. They ran past me and I realised he was chasing her trying to pet her calling "Skinny Dog, Skinny Dog" I called Jenny back and let the boy pet her...I guess, now that I think of it, she really is a skinny dog. :D
