Hi, I was just reading the link that was posted to me on the dog general board for What Presley gets fed....(http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8051&highlight=feeding)
I am kinda curious here... When I got Presley from the Breeders she had her on Purina puppy food, when I got her I switched her over to IAMS... Well this is my question. What are the signs of allergies? Presley has a irritation to something and she gets what we here at home call eye snots. I can't remember the tech term my vet called it but he gave us drops to use on her. She is suppost to get these drops everyday 3 times a day 2-4 drops in each eye. Well the snots have never really went away. I thought at first it was because she was in a whelping pen that was full of sawdust and it may have been the dust that was bothering her. But after we got her home and bathed her and a few weeks later it stayed i switched her food thinking it might be that.. Maybe it is still the food? My vet never said it was a allergie. He bascially just said she is getting irritated by something..

Dogs can have allergies to a lot of things...food, airborn, things, etc. Some goop in the eyes is natural. The goop, esp. if it is greenish or mucus-y though, can be an indication of an allergy. The vet can do testing to determine exactly what specific allergies by be there, but it can be expensive.
Sadie has an allergy that we are pretty sure is not food related. She gets goop in her eyes and licks her paws A LOT!!! We have treated this in two ways. First we give her a vitamin supplement to mositure her coat and pads. Second, we give her Benedryl twice a day. It has really helped her a lot. (if you want to try these, please, check with your vet first!)

The other reason for excess gunl couldbe an infection. Check the whites of Presley's eye to make sure they are not red. Hold her head and gently pull her skin back to see the upper part of her whites (the bottom area is redish pink because of the 3rd eyelid) If this appears discolored, she may have an infection and it can easily be treated with antibiotic

Can you tell we have had some eye issues with our dogs?!? :)

Gosh! allergy signs our pretty vast, such as licking, scratching,
snorkling-breathing,sneezing,eyes,skin,coat and spitting up.
Two of my dogs suffer, which I Believe is allergy because
it seems to be seasonal. My Rocky is the worst, it can be air borne and also something he eats outside that upsets him.

If you do decide to question
your vet about Presley getting allergy tested,
I am curious what your vet says.

It may sound weird, but many dogs are allergic to rice. I was having difficulty with my dog's skin until I read an article about dogs and rice. I asked my vet and he suggested a dog food, the name escapes me but it is a science diet made of fish and potato. It stinks something aweful, but my puppy loves it and his skin has cleared up. If you look at dog food, and treats you will be surprised how often rice is one of the ingredients. Hope this helps.:)
