I bought a pair of "four paws" thinning shears for Kaige, well they don't cut well at all. That is the only brand I can find so far (in a store thats nearby anyways). I did notice that petco sells the "Millers Forge" brand but they don't look much better & are also pretty cheap ($10ish).
I don't want anything fancy or expensive just something decent. Can anyone reccomend a good quality thinning shear for a decent price?

what do you mean by "donīt cut well"?? donīt cut enough hair, none at all, or what??

please dont take me wrong but i guess they are supposed to cut just a bit, not the whole hair (maybe you know this) but maybe you expected something else, perhaps

Yeah I knew that, thats why I want a pair. :p
But they do not really cut at all. The fur just bends with the sissors, almost like the joint is not tight enough but I tried tightening it & loosening it. And the hair that actually makes it in between the blades is not getting cut enough like the blade is way too dull. They pretty much just crimp the hair.

thats a shame, and really frustrating, are people shears too expensive??? theres a web but i dont know which one to suggest since i dont use them :p but you can check them out at
www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com
or try a beauty salon supplier to see if human shears are about the same

My friend bought the brand from Petco. It worked fine when I visited her last. She told me it was around 10-15 dollars. I don't know if they only work once or what. But I'd try both brands and see which is better. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I think I'll stop by petco & give theirs a try.

I have a crappy brand too. I bought it for Mandy's tail ... her fur is abnormally long and doesn't "flow" with the rest of her so I trim it. I didn't want something expensive because it's not a huge deal as her fur never matted or anything. But, what I found worked was to just cut closer to the joint of the shears. I guess you can do that in the meantime until you get another one, or just live with it like I do :p

I have a pair from PetEdge, but for the life of me can't remember what kind they are. But I've heard good things about Miller's Forge. :)

Are you using it the right way? The way I was taught was to start about 4-5" from the tips and rapidly open and close the scissors while moving to the tips of the hair. I agree with Sarah, as well. You get better results when you cut closer to the joint of the shears.

Yeah I am doing it both ways, cutting as close to the joint of the sissors as I can (but they aren't that long either) and I also start towards the tip of the hairs & cut really fast backwards (I learned that from watching human hair dressers use them). lol
One of my friends is a hair dresser and I need my hair trimmed soon anyways, I'll have to ask her what brands she reccomends. I don't think there is a difference at all between human & dog thinning shears, is there?

I don't think there is a difference between human and dog. We got ours at the dollar tree and its still working well. We used it for Pepper and ourselves. Can you return the one you got and tell them it isn't cutting?

Yes I can return. I think thats why it's dull, I jinxed myself. LOL When I purchased it I asked (because I know that four paws is not that good of a name but it was all I could find) that if I was unsatisfied with it could I return it? They said as long as I have the packaging & cleaned it up. Which I kept the package & they aren't even dirty.

I thought of you today, and checked my thinning shears, they are Anvil, made by Top Performance, which is the PetEdge brand. They work great for me, had them for over a year now, and still work great! :)

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to my friends (hairdresser) tonight to get myself a trim, if she doesn't have a good pair that I can purchase or knows of a retailer that is close by (I use my credit card for emergancies only... or at least try) then I'll be sure to get a pair of those.
