This morning Tikeya and Baby were out in the backyard playing, while my mom and dad sat on the sundeck. Baby dugg up a dentibone, and Tikeya wanted it.. So she went topick it up, and Baby did at the same time.. That was it, the fight was on.. Tikeya didnt hurt baby at all, she pretty much submissed right away.
My dad split them up in a matter of seconds,
but it was too late, Tikeya was very badly hurt..
And baby had a little limp.
I rushed Tikeya to the Vet, and she went into surgery.
4.5 hours/and a couple hundred $$$ later, she is home..
Shes super groggy, but shes expected to heal really well.
here are some pics..

I hope she heals up quickly. Fights are nasty things!

Females are famous for this kind of stuff. Two females will fight til they kill each other, doesn't matter if one submits or not. That tends to matter to males, but not females. I've found my girls tend to hold grudges too, much longer than the boys. If I were you, I'd keep them completely seperated at all times from now on.

Sorry to hear about the dog fight. Those are huge looking wounds. I agree with Glacier I would keep those dogs apart. Good thoughts & prayers sent Tekyia's way for quick healing.

Yikes! Poor Tikeya!!!!

Yup, the two girls will have to be separated whenever there's food, treats, or anything else involved.

Bad girl, Baby!

Those are huge looking wounds

Yeah they are'nt as bad as they look.
They are long (as you can see), but not deep.. the vet was really worried that they would just keep ripping and getting longer if not dealt with.

I am so sorry, to hear about Tikeya.
Poor girl.
It is a shame you have to separate them.

I remember when Rocky and Sheba went at it a couple of times.
Lucky I was their and grabbed Rocky before he could
hurt her. After that I took everything out of the back yard and in
the house they could possibly fight over. I kept them separated
for about 6 months when I was not home to supervise them.
I stopped letting them rough house with each-other too.
Eventually I was able to keep them together unsupervised.
Till this day, I never have anything laying around they can fight over
including me.
(of course Sheba is so old now)
I was told early on by a woman who ran an Akita rescue,
that dogs never forget and once they have a drag out fight
it is rare they can be together again.
I hope that is not the case with you. :(

It was a fight over a prized possession namely food, not over dislike for one another. If they got along well before there is no reason for major concern as long as no food treats are laying around to cause another fight and even then chances are it won't happen because, Tikeya learned an important lesson today and will never likely try to take food from Baby again. Dogs can have tiffs and it is over within seconds, if the loser got knocked down a notch in their pack order they might be acting warier for a few days, showing more submissiveness as a repectiveful gesture of a lower ranking member to the winner but rarely is there lasting anomosity, if there is it is usually caused by the humans favoring the lower ranking dog. I can understand worrying though, when I fostered I always used muzzles on all the dogs my own included(to make sure none had the advantage over the other) until I was absolutely positive that all were getting along. Over the years I have had dog disputes especially when a new dog is brought into the home, especially when I had one very dominant foster, or my own very dominant female who like to ket new dogs know she was the boss within the first 15 mnutes of meeting, so far muzzles have prevented any trips to the ER. One of the best muzzles available is what is called the italian muzzle, it is similiar to a greyhound muzzle allowing the dog to be able to eat and drink with it on and most important pant easily or vomit safely if they are ill unlike many other commercial muzzles, it is lighter in weight and more flexible than the greyhound muzzles. Greyhound muzzles are used not because the dogs are agressive but they can be competitive and rough play can easily result in tearing their very thin skins, so minimizes possible damage. Here is an example of the italian muzzle http://www.dogmuzzle.com/itbaspoldogm1.html

personally I dont really like the idea of muzzeling the dogs.
We'll just keep them seperated when food/treats are around, or in the backyard. If worse comes to worse, and Tikeya cant find common ground with Baby.. Then her and I will have to leave.

Mandy and Luka got in a fight just over a week ago. Mandy lost two teeth in the fight, one of which was sticking through her bottom lip. Luckily I called my boss and she came up to the vet (it was waaaay after hours) and she surgically removed it. Mandy also has several puncture wounds.

I guess I could say I know what you're going through. The only time Mandy and Luka are allowed together now is if they are tired, and Luka doesn't sleep often.

Poor girl :( She submissed, too? Man ... I can't believe Baby went after her if she submissed. Our problem is that Mandy has always been the dominant one but now Luka is, and Mandy doesn't seem to want to accept it. The fights usually start over Nova, although Nova runs away from it.

I'm really sorry about that :( :(

Unfortunately, I think it's usually that way. My mom only wants girl dogs, and she said the other night "let's get two more". I'm like ... only if they're males. 5 girls? Nooooo way. They're just b*tches, through and through, most of the time.

Poor Tikeya! :( I'm sending good thoughts her way. I have three females, I'm so scared they will end up in a fight one day. I pray if it happens that I can remain calm and get it broke up. Jada did go at Diamond awhile back at the park. I did get them broke up ok but its a scary thing to deal with....

Thanks for all the warm replies.
This whole incident has really scared me, and my family..
We are making alot of adjustments around
our house to assure that these girls dont go at it again.
No more eating in the same rooms, Baby gets fed first.
Baby gets treats first, and eats it all, before the other two get treats.
Baby goes outside alone(unless supervised),
Oscar and Tikeya can go for pees together.

Anytime anyone comes over,
we remind them not to let Tikeya and Baby outdoors together.

I really hope we can avoid this from EVER happening again.
(((sigh)))

shes doing alot better though, shes not licking at her owies..
Her wounds and stiches arnt red in color anymore.
They seem to be healing really well..
She even has some peach fuzz growing hehe.

Dang! Those are some nasty looking places. Looks like your girl really got the worst of it:(
I'm sooo sorry to hear about this. Goes to show that you never know what's going to happen.

I just hope and pray nothing like that happens with Bon and Roxey, I don't think I could bear it.

Big {{{HUGS}}} to your sweet girl and good healing vibes coming her way.

I am so sorry to hear this, I hope she heals up quickly!
Growing up we had a GSD mix and my grandmother that lived next door had a lab, and every summer they would get into a fight like that. It's like that's all they needed was to get all their anger out once a year then they were fine.
I hope everything goes well for all of you, and no more fights happen.
My friend has to male Malamutes that are siblings and they fight all the time but they cry and go nuts when they are not together. (Talk about a love/hate relationship!! )

i´m sorry......poor Tikeya........ i had the situation and i have my girls separated, when i had a male around there was no problem, but when he passed fights started between them, so i got them separated, it´s sad since they really got along well before.

Poor Tikeya, those are big ouchies! part of the reason we have a male now is that before when we had two females, they started to get into these knock-down drag-out fights and it was getting bloody. So after Rosie was killed by a truck, we decided to get a male. There have not been any fights between Star and Sherman. in fact, she lets him take any treats she doesn't want, even from right under her nose.
I agree that you can't leave the two females alone now, once ours started to fight, it happened more frequently and over the smallest thing.
Prayers going out for Tikeya's recovery. and hugs to you, it's so upsetting to have your babies fighting.

Tikeya is doing great..
Everytime Baby comes around, Tikeya submisses..
We have been very stern about not letting them out together at the same time.
And It seems to be working really well.
Tikeyas fur is already growing back, and she goes to get his stiches taken out this weekend!.

owie! I have dealt with a LOT of dog fights but nothing that has ever ended up that bad! the worst was with Shadow, but that was 5 against 1 and only resulted in a slit eyelid, and a couple of punctures  i hope Tikeya is all better now :(
