I needed Pet Talk this weekend and don't have access to a computer!!!! When I got home from work on Friday, Duncan was very sick!! Diarrhea in his crate, I gave him a little burger and rice and he threw it up almost immediately!!! I took him for a walk and he was his usual joyful self but straining to go # 2 about 15 times in 20 minutes!! I was a nervous wreck but I had to go to my second job!! I called someone to come over and watch him and Jack (since the roommate was "out") and I didn't know if she had let them in the basement that morning or the garage and they had found something poisonous.....I just didn't know! Duncan had diarrhea all weekend and threw up 2 more times on Saturday. He's only eaten ~1/2 of his regular amount of food and I've ben giving it to him in very small doses to be sure it goes and stays down. Yesterday and today he seems much better although a bit more sluggish than usual but the diarrhea has abated quite a bit.
Anyway, the only thing I can think of that may have made him sick would be butter! The other day, I caught him eating Land O'Lakes sweet cream whipped butter right out of the container that he pulled off the counter. But I didn't think it would make him that sick!!
If he is still having trouble tonight, he's going to the vet. He seems to have a very sensitive stomach. I hate to see him suffering....
Any home remedies for an upset stomach? Does anyone know why/how butter is bad for a pup?

What a scare you had this weekend. A trip to the vet may be best just to ease your mind. The butter could have done it. It acts like a lubricant and too much of it can really make them go. Cheese can have the opposite effect on some animals. If Duncan has a delicate tummy, all that grease could upset it. I can't eat fried foods for the same reason. A check-up would be best. Hope he is all well soon. Please keep us posted.

Oh, poor Duncan!!! My Star is the queen butter eater. When I'm baking, she trys desperately to get the butter every time. A few times she's succeeded! Sounds like the butter was the culprit! Often, dogs, especially during holidays, become ill with upset stomachs from eating too much rich and fatty foods. Sometimes, it can result in an acute case of pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas from too much high fat food. I'd call the vet stat! Sounds like he needs to be treated with some fluids and medic! He may be becoming dehydrated. Please do call! And let us know how he is, ok??? Love and hugs to you and Duncan!!!
Jennifert I have never had this happen, but I would tend to agree with Nurse Sandra. It sounds like a very good reason for a vet visit ASAP. It sounds like Duncan may be over the worst of it, but I would still at least call and get his/her opinion as to any follow-up care after this kind of thing. Please keep us posted!
And yes Spencer, I did originally think this post was about Logan's cat!! :D

Jennifer, Duncan and Butter are NOT a good mix, either kind of Butter!!! :D Thinking of your earlier post about Duncan locking you out of your house, and the antics of my Butter.......together could be bad news!!
I hope his tummy will feel better soon. Sounds like he is on the mend.

Sorry it took me so long to post but I wanted to hear from the vet before I did. Duncan had a regular #2 this morning!! YEA!!! I was so excited over his elimination this am on our walk. Thank Goodness no one saw me hugging him and jumping up and down!! They would have thought I was potty-training a toddler!!:D Anyway, the vet said since he ate the butter on Thursday and his #2's( I hate the word p**p!) are harder and harder every day that her only concern now is that he has a "sore fanny" :( She did mention the pancreatitis (Good job Dr. Sandra! ;) ) but she said since he is such a big dog and he didn't eat too much butter relative to his size, she thinks he will be fine! She would like me to put him back on his hamburger, rice and green bean diet for a week or so and pick up some antibiotics for his "inflamed" fanny. (He's had this fanny thing before so same meds!) You know my one concern about getting a dog was that I hate to pick up dog p**p and now I have this HUGE dog with huge you-know-whats that I have to pick up and NOW he's having trouble with that whole area......That is TRUE LOVE!!!
Thanks for the advice and concern everyone! I really was terrified this weekend and after I read the posts last night, I felt better! Even though they were saying, yes butter IS bad, it ruled out a bigger problem which is what I was worried about. You know how the mind wanders when you dont' know something, always thinking the worst is going to happen....
Once again, Pet Talkers have eased the mind of another crazy worried mom!! XXXXX :D

Well I may have spoken too soon fellow Pettalkers...:( :o
My roommate gets home from work before I do and she found diarrhea by the front door. Duncan was in his crate all day but she said she didn't think it was Jack that did it? I don't know how she would know the difference but....Duncan was out of my sight for maybe a minute that morning so I don't know how he would have done it.....
BUT to be on the safe side, he has a vet appt tomorrow at 4pm. They want to make sure he doesn't have a fever or any internal damage to his tummy....
I'm sure he'll be fine. Thanks for all the well wishes. I will update ASAP after the vet tomorrow! I truly think he is fine since his POOP! (Gross! Sandra, I noticed you even did it in brown!! YUCK! ;) ) was normal again this am. But geez, I've got $200 extra dollars in my checking account and I was looking for something to do with it anyway. :p :D

Well Duncan went to the vet yesterday. He has a fever :( . She put him on some medicine for his sore fanny ( I can't remember the name of it) but she didn't want to put him on antibiotics because she was concerned they would upset his belly more. He has to eat his bland diet for a few weeks along with 10 days of the medicine and 2 pepcid tablets a day. She said the butter probably did it but she's not sure since he does have a slight fever. She felt his belly and said it was "tense" but that could have been because he was really nervous. If his fever is not gone in a few days and he is still acting strange along with the diarrhea, we'll go back for blood tests.
He is usually very good at the vets but yesterday he tried to "get" the vet. She came around the table to examine him and he lunged at her barking and growling. I had taken his gentle leader off so that she could get a better look at his ears and mouth if necessary. I put it back on him and held his head while she examined him. I had to do the tooth and gum part for her. She was very nice about it. I thought she would be mad and give him a red sticker on his file!! :o But she understood that he was very "protective" and very nervous and wary of strangers. So it's the "one step forward, two steps back" theory again!!!
On top of all that, last night, I found a pretty sizable cut on his back paw, right next to his pad. So I put triple antibiotic on that and will keep an eye on it! Boy, it's alot of work to have a dog!! Whew:rolleyes: ;) :D
Well Duncan went to the vet yesterday. He has a fever . >>>>>
So sorry, to hear that Duncan is still not feeling well.
Wishing him many get well wishes.
Please keep us informed on how he is doing.

Thanks for all the well-wishes everyone!! I'm actually not sure how Duncan is to be honest...He has been on the medication, his bland diet and the Pepcid since Friday. But last night he did feel warm to the touch and he was asleep before I was! Completely unusual behavior!!! I had to work my second job yesterday and when I got home my roommate said he had had diarrhea on their evening walk. 2x. So I don't know....If the diarrhea has not gone away and he still has a fever.....I'm going to give it a few more days though. This morning he didn't "go" despite walking for over an hour! The most noticeable thing is his sleepiness but that could be the medication. And of course the poop problems....
Sandra, I did notice last night that his nose is pretty runny...this symptom comes and goes but at night it is always present the past few days. Maybe he has some type of cold?
Thanks for your concern and encouragement everyone. Please don't worry. I would hate to see everyone worried about us. I'm sure he will be fine. Just a spring cold? I'll keep this post updated until he's 100%!!!!
Thanks again!!:D :D

Hey Jennifer! Well, I wish that the news was a little better....Poor baby's stomach! I quick looked back at the previous posts...what medication aside from the Pepcid was he given again??? I was thinking....did the vet show you, or can you take his temperature? That would be a good assessment tool that you could do yourself. I know that would probably be hard for you! But, if you can, that would be good. Make sure he's drinking enough water. That's SO important if he's still making diapoopies. Dehydration can make him very sleepy and sluggish. Is he eating his food? I would keep a chart or piece of paper on the frig and make a note of his poops....times, amts., description; also when he ate, amt. and type of food, any vomiting, sudden diapoops, etc. Did the vet mention that he might have a virus? Colds are viral, not bacterial, though colds that go untreated can lead to secondary respir. bacterial infections. (The proverbial cold that keeps holding on forever is an example of that!) Make note of the drainage, if any from nose and eyes. If it's clear, I wouldn't worry to much. But call the vet if it's yellow or greenisih, or if he sounds wheezy. Poor Duncan, poor Jennifer! How can we NOT worry!!! Please give Duncan a big hug from me. Love to you both. Sandra, Cody and Star

I think I can report that Duncan is doing better! On his walks last night and this morning his #2s were small and a little sloppy but I wouldn't call them "diarrhea" (I can't believe how much time I spend talking about Duncan's *poop* and that people actually LISTEN!!!!) LOL :D :p
Sandra, he is taking something called "metronidazole" I don't know what it is exactly. She did say she wasn't going to give him antibiotics because of the stomach problems so I'm assuming it's like compazine for people maybe....? I'm sure I could take his temperature and I may do that. I have an old mercury thermometer around. I would feel awkward doing it but it would be a good idea. Instead, I run around feeling Duncan's temperature and checking to make sure his gums are pink. Then I run around after Jack, the roommate's dog, and try to see who feels hotter!! ;) :D :p
The vet didn't mention a virus. I think she was concerned that if he threw up more or if his diarrhea did not go away, that he had something more than a self-inflicted "butter-ache" I did find that cut on his pad AFTER the vet visit. Maybe that was what gave him the slight fever? It's not that big and was fairly new when at the vet's... (I've been putting antibiotic cream on that and that's healing nicely!) The nose is clear and he's breathing fine so maybe just the same spring runny nose that his mom has!
I think I will make up a little chart for the fridge, one that I can keep a weekly running total on. It's a good idea to have anyway since I have a roommate and although I ask her NOT to feed him anything or give him dinner until I get home, she doesn't always comply. (The other day, she "forgot" and gave him Iams for dinner instead of his special food! Could be why the diarrhea has not really abated too much! I told her that from now on, I will feed him all his meals, thanks anyway!) It would be nice to have something where I can write down what he's had, when and how much.
Thanks for all your help, advice and encouragement Sandra!! I think we'll be up and running soon, Duncan and I!
Time to get back on the well-wishing wagon and spread the love to others!!! I thank God for the small problems sometimes.....:(

HERE I GO AGAIN!
Watch out for side effects from Metronidazole. Look for yellowing of the eyes, orange urine and severe loss of appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you notice this and mention liver problems. Be sure the vet LISTENS to you. It could be serious. I don't want to scare you. Usually there are no serious side effects, but be aware that it is POSSIBLE.

Thanks ladies! I took him off the medication a few days ago. He didn't finish the 10 days.
I'm still worried about him and I think I need to take some time off from work and get serious with the vet.
His diarrhea is still hanging around. He'll have a regular bowel movement and then a few minutes later, diarrhea.
This morning he showed no interest whatsoever in his food. he just looked at it and went back to lie down.
Something is wrong and I don't know what. I need to call the vet, bring in a stool sample, and get some blood tests done. Enough scr*wing around. I have some money saved and I think this is what I will need to spend it on.
I can't sleep at night worrying about him. I have no idea what it could be.

Jennifer, I think you're right. You need to get some firm answers! Did they not ask for a stool sample before??? Did they do any blood work? I have to go back and re-read your original post. Was it Flagyl (metronidazole) that he was on??? I know how this is stressing you. When something's wrong, but you don't know what or why, it's on your mind constantly. Do you have faith in your vet? If you don't get the answers you need, perhaps you could see another? I feel so badly for Duncan and you too! Let us know what you decide. We're thinking of you, and send love and hugs to Duncan! Well, it appears to be getting worse.. Duncan had thrown up at least 15 -20 times during the day yesterday while I was at work. It was all over the house, little puddles. It looked like he had one good one of whatever was in his stomach and then the rest was just water. He had also been eating my roommate's plant. I let him out and he immediately started eating more grass. He had terrible diarrhea that was just more watery than anything.
I had to go to my second job and my roommate was going out partying with her friends so I called my mother and she came over to get him and brought him home with her. I asked her to put a cup of food down but he didnt' touch it or the water. I did get him to swallow 2 Pepcids tablets before I left for work. She said he didnt' throw up or go #2 at all while he was at her house. When I got out of work around midnight, I went over there. He came to the door looking so sad and tired and weak. We went outside to walk around in case he had to go but he didn't. I dont' think he had anything left inside since he hadnt' eaten since Wednesday. We slept in my mom's spare room on a twin bed together. I felt him for a fever. He seemed warm on his back legs and the paws of his feet? This morning he woke up his usual cheerful self. He still had no interest in any food and took a small sip of water, which he threw up in the car on the way home.
I called the vet this am and he has an appt tonight at 5. They said I should bring him in right away but I couldn't get the time off of work!
Needless to say, I'm a nervous wreck. I do like his vet but since his last 3 appts have been "emergency" or short notice, I have to see whomever is available and it's been someone different the last 2 times. They are very nice and have a great reputation in town but I think they aren't taking me seriously. And Duncan doesn't do well at the vet, he gets nervous and snippy, so he doesn't make a good impression. Regardless, I will MAKE them listen to me tonight. He obviously has something wrong with his stomach, maybe damage from when he was a stray, or...I dont' know, I just don't know....I just want him well so he can enjoy his life. It's so heartbreaking to see him sick
Thanks for all the support through this everyone. It means more than you know. My life is so hectic, no one seems to want to take the time to hear about Duncan or have some consideration for my feelings about my baby dog...except Pet Talkers!!:) I get that "oh, it's just a dog" look all the time and that just makes me feel worse. So thank you to everyone for being so thoughtful and helpful.

You're right Logan, I don't have access to a computer on the weekends. I did think of you guys though and I felt bad that I couldn't update everyone over the weekend. I tried to get to the library but with everything going on I just didn't get a chance....
So here goes...
At the vet on Friday, he was miserable and cranky and tried to bite every person and dog in the waiting room that came within 10 feet of him. A clear sign that he was very ill.
The vet couldn't get near him to examine him while I was in the room so she took him in the back and muzzled him :(
She said he was dehydrated from not drinking so he had to have fluids injected under his skin, making a big bubble around his neck that would slowly rehydrate him and decrease. She took blood to do some tests and said that there was "thickening of his bowels" But no fever. She sent him home with me until the results of the blood tests were in. She called about 8:30 pm. His blood tests were fine, ruling out cancer or any infection or disease I think. He still wasn't eating although he seemed hungry by now. (His last meal was Wednesday evening!)
On Saturday morning at 8am he had to go back for xrays. I had to leave him there this time.:( Around 11am the vet called and I went in for a consult. (I was a nervous wreck all weekend to say the least!, especially at this point!) She showed me his xrays, it looks like he may have sticks imbedded in his stomach wall. She also said his stomach was very swollen and the ridges in his stomach wall were very inflamed. On the other xray, she was unsure because she couldnt' get a good look at his stomach, meaning either his pancreas was swollen, blocking the view or his stomach on that side is so inflamed and swollen? She said she's not worried about cancer or a tumor becuase he is so young and the blood tests didnt' show evidence of pancreatitis but she couldn't be sure until she had the radiologist look at the xrays. She said he may have a gastric ulcer. She also said that if he doesn't pass what looks like sticks in his stomach, he may have to have surgery to remove them.
So, she let me take him home Saturday!:D I could feed him but only 2 or 3 tablespoons of hamburger and rice and 2 or 3 tablespoons of water or an ice cube. He was thrilled to eat again which was a great sign! He didnt' poop at all Saturday though. But around 7:30, he went and got his bear and wanted to play. :D He did poop a little yesterday and this morning but no sticks that I could see. And he is so eager to eat! I can only give him 1/2 the amount of the bland food and a pepcid with every meal. If he starts throwing up again or any other symptoms, he will need to have a barium series to see what else is going on in his belly.
I think that they really have no idea what is wrong...I 'm still confused as to where we go from here. The radiologist will be getting the xrays in the mail today and I assume will get back to the vet asap. Even if he continues to improve, I think he will have to eat special food and take pepcid forever! :( Today is the first day he is alone and he was so very sad when I left this morning....I hope he will be ok.
So I know this sounds so confusing and it's hard to tell exactly where we stand but that is how I feel! I'm happy that he is eating and keeping his food down. I'm very happy that he doesn't appear to have any cancer or disease. I'm not so happy about the permanent damage to his stomach or the fact that he may have to live in discomfort for a long time... I guess I just need to take it one day at a time from here on. I will be talking to the vet everyday for the next week or so and monitoring his progress.
Thanks for the support everyone! I had a terrible stress-filled weekend worrying about him. And as usual, no one but my mom and dad seemed to think a very sick dog is anything worth worrying about...:( So I'm very grateful for my friends at PetTalk who will listen and give a d*mn! ;) :D
Bottom Line: He's better everyday. So far so good.

Jennifer. What a weekend you had! And poor Duncan has really been put through the mill! You must have been on pins and needles all weekend. I was so relieved to hear that the vet does not believe there is any cancer or infectious process going on. I wasn't surprised to hear about the dehydration. After all that diarrhea and vomiting, with little food or fluid intake, he was bound to be behind in fluids. Hopefully the radiologist will be able to narrow it down further. My beloved Jingles (RB) was hospitalized once after a night and day of vomiting and diarrhea. The diagnosis after xrays..."multiple foreign objects!!" The "objects" included a bird skull, sticks, small pebbles and sand! Luckily she passed them. I am thrilled that Duncan is eating small portions again. Did the vet actually say that his stomach or bowel was permanently damaged?? In what way?? Perhaps he meant that bowel is irriatated and inflammed from the sticks?? We'll just have to hope and pray that he won't need surgery. You're such a wonderful, dedicated Mom to Duncan!! Hang in there; we're all with you. We'll he praying for a full recovery for sweet Duncan. Please let us know when you hear from the radiologist. Hugs and kisses to you dear Duncan:)

Well the radiologist called today. He doesn't think there is any obstruction in Duncan's belly, not did he see anything wrong with the pancreas. :D :D
He thinks that there are just sticks or twigs in Duncan's stomach that will hopefully pass naturally....*fingers crossed*
So as long as they come out in the next few days we're ok. if not, surgery will still be the option. :( I've been checking his p**p the last few days and nothing yet! Hopefully soon. Because we all know how I feel about p**p and looking through it is not my favorite thing to do!!!
Sandra, the vet pointed out a separate area in Duncan's stomach where she thinks he may have a gastric ulcer. We're going to deal with the sticks problem first though and see how he does. (He's a worrier, like his mom! ;) )
I think I figured out how he got those twigs in his belly: When we go to the park in the morning, he likes to run through the woods. I dont' like him to because he always gets twigs and burrs stuck in hs tail and the feathering on his legs. Sometimes, he will pull them out with his teeth and spit them out. he may have swallowed some and Wa La....$400 vet bills!!
Anyway, I'm happy that I'm getting closer to closing the chapter on this little incident. And I'm sure you all are too!! What started out as a little taste of butter has turned into something much bigger and poor Duncan has had enough I'm sure!!
Thanks for everything!:D :) :D

Jennifer, I was just thinking that...didn't this all start out over a stick of butter??!!! But the news sounds good so far!! Phew! And of course, we are all hoping that Duncan can avoid sir-jury! But Jennifer, you deserve the mother of the year award in my book. Never has a poop hating mother come so far, so fast!:D The image of you poking through his poop for the evidence made my day!!;) Give that beautiful boy a big hug from me, Star and Cody!

Duncan seems to be doing really well! His p**p has been regular the last few days, normal size and consistency. BUT, still no sign of the sticks yet!! And believe you me, I've about had it with the searching!!!:p ;) Maybe I missed it....
I'll tell you though, he is back to his old self personality-wise which makes me happy! He's so interesting to be around and fun and charming and sweet and it really makes me happy to see him so carefree and healthy. That is what this pet ownership thing is all about!!!
Thanks so much for asking about him Sandra and for all the advice and concern! I really appreciate everything! I wil be sure to give him a hug and kiss from his Aunt Sandra and his friends Star and Cody!:D

I really missed the boat on this one...I read the first few, when Duncan was doing better and didn't realize things had gone downhill. Glad that Duncan is doing better now!!! :)

Here's a poop patrol story for you.....
One our first anniversary my husband gave me a band with channel set diamonds to match my wedding ring. A week or two later we went to his brother's house for a Confirmation. When we got there I showed my sister-in-law my new ring. They had a Yorkie puppy -- adorable -- and a chewer. I got down on the floor to play with her. She chewed my belt, my earrings, my rings, everything. When we were done I went to wash my hands and took off my rings..... a diamond was missing.
The next day I spent the party waiting for the dog to poop and then checking for my stone. I never found it.
Had to tell the jeweler "the dog ate it." (It should not have fallen out and they replaced it!)
So glad Duncan is better!
