I am new here with a new puppy! Sort of a long story, but she is a schnoodle that is 12 weeks old. One of her littermates had Coccidosis? and the entire litter was treated for 7 days with Albon. She tested neg. when I first got her. Anyway, a few days ago she had loose bowels and no appetite. You could actually hear her stomach gurgling across the room. She would not play, eat, or drink. I took her in to see the vet and he gave her Albon again and a pill that I am not sure what it is.... to be taken twice a day. She seemed much better the next day and was eating again and playing. Well, today she started again with the loose bowels, gurgly stomach and no appetite. She is also having some really smelly gas! Her diet has remained the same. Just Iams puppy food (dry). She hasn't had ANYTHING different to eat. Does anyone know anything about this virus that can shed some light on it for me? I thought she was over it, and now it's here again!!! THANKS!!!

How long have you had her?? I know when dogs are stressed they can get diarrhea. Maybe the stress from leaving her littermates and mom and going to a new home stressed her out and is messing with her tummy??

is not a virus, but rather a protozoa organism. The smell is the sloughing of the intestinal lining, and disease process.
There is a danger in puppies that persistent and severe diarrhea can lead to life threatening dehydration. Is the puppy continuing to drink water? If the puppy has not drank fluids for the past 24 hrs and/or the saliva is sticky or forms strings on your fingers, then puppy is dehydrated, and should get medical rehydration as soon as possible.
The one medication Albon is appropriate for coccidiosis. Did the Vet confirm coccidiosis with a fecal exam prior to giving the Albon? One would think puppy would not relaspe while on the Albon, unless a bacterial overgrowth is occuring secondary to the coccidiosis.
If the condition does not improve contact your Vet again. If puppy starts vomiting, get puppy to an emergency Vet immediately as it could be Parvo instead of Coccidia.
So your strategy should be:
1. Keep puppy hydrated. If puppy is already dehydrated, then it's an emergency. While in get a Parvo blood test just in case.
2. Give the Albon + mystery drug 24 more hrs to show improvement. If no improvement call the Vet.
3. If puppy becomes nauseated and starts to vomit- possible Parvo and an emergency situation.

No diarhea today, just the opposite. She has eaten more today and drank also. Stomach isn't rumbling today either. Hope this means all is going to be well. It has been weird, one day sick, the next not.

You may want to try a bland diet for your puppy to help keep her more balanced from one day until the next. You only have to do this for a few days. It is certainly not ok if your puppy loses hydration. You can cook regular white rice (about as much as she normally eats, maybe a little more), drain it, cool it and let her eat that. You may also boil some chicken and give her that too. That helps immensely. If this happens again, I would consider consulting another vet - it is never ok for a puppy to have continual diarrhea which will lead to dehydration as others have said.

When I first got Pandy as a pup I had her about 4 days and the exact same thing happened to her. I could hear her tummy gurgling and moving - she had diahareah and vomit etc. It was parvo - luckily she survived - hopefully yours will too - I would ask the vet about a possible Parvo situation!!!!
