I'm sorry if this has already been posted.. I tried searching but got an error every time so if it WAS already posted, my apologies!!

I found this on another forum I post on and though you might find this interesting!!

Why Its NOT ok to "give away" your pet :
This is how some people see your "free" loved one:
-- Free bait to train fighting dogs.
-- Free bait to train greyhounds.
-- Free fish bait.
-- Free snake food.
-- Free food for other cultures that eat them
-- Free for animal research, they pay $180.00 per cat
-- Free sacrifice for satanic rituals.
-- Free animal for malicious pranks.
-- Free animal to insert a firecracker into.

"Free" is seen as "worthless" in the eye of the beholder. Don't offer your animals FREE to a good home, unless you don't care what happens to them.
It happened to me. Ask for ID, copy it
Get phone numbers
Check out the home, make sure they live there
Get a vets reference, ask for a donation for the pet, tell them you will drop in to follow up on its welfare.
If someone can't afford to buy an animal, can they afford to feed & vet it?
Search "free to good home" on the internet. The stories bring tears to your eyes.

Along with the post was this link: http://www.petrescue.com/library/free-pet.htm

I know that before ever giving away any of my animals (if I were ever in a situation to do so and I know I wouldn't because I always have my parents who would be more than happy to take them if I couldn't) I would seriously do a lot of checking on any family that was interested in taking any of my pets! :(

The only thing that really upsets me is that people "give away" their pets every day. And its not a question of how much they WERE loved, its more a question of WILL they still be loved in their new home?? And its scary, because those scenarios aren't made up. They have REALLY happened to someone before :(

Yup I think that's true. I don't think the rabbits are actually HARMED but, still. Would you want your pet rabbit being chased and scared out of its mind??

Yes, but not PET rabbits. Some rabbits (like mice) are bred specifically for reptile food.

How would you like it if you had to give up your pet rabbit whom you've loved dearly to soemone who PROMISES to love and take care of it as you did.. only to find out later that yeah, the rabbit sure was loved as part of a python's dinner.

I wasn't raised that way so it is really hard to think that way, sorry. If I couldn't keep Oslo he would go to his breeders daughter (my 4H leader) if not her then his breeder, and they have no limit on rabbits, they will take any.

Sorry, just wanted to mention that it is an extremely malicious, out-dated practice to train Greyhounds on live rabbits  Nobody does that anymore since there is no significant difference between a Greyhound trained on live rabbits versus a Greyhound trained on white, plastic jugs and plush toys (these are the common training devices nowadays). But at any rate, I always cringe whenever I see the title "Free to Good Home". IMO, no matter how greyt the prospective home is, I will always require an adoption fee.

Oh man, I can't tell you how much this bothers me. I just can't imagin selling a pet that way  I do have to say that some people just aren't educted as to WHY they should not offer pets for free. I've had several friends who simply said "I don't need to money so why make someone pay".
