Getting a male for your female bunny because you think she's lonely will give you even more trouble than what you have right now :o

I think you're making a mistake.. do you have homes for these baby bunnies lined up already?? Do you have money for vet bills and vaccinations for the babies after they're born??

Breeding is not something to go into just because "you want her to have babies". If you don't have the money to get her spayed, you certainly don't have the money for an emergency C-section, should it come up. Can you afford a separate cage for the male?
If not, the male will impregnate her very quickly after she gives birth, over and over again. Breeding so often will deplete her calcium and cause all sorts of EXPENSIVE health problems.
What would you do with all of the babies produced? My rabbit's first litter was of eleven babies, and even though I had homes lined up I had a heck of a time placing all of the babies and wound up keeping two of them just because I couldn't find homes. What if the babies have health problems or birth defects? Can you afford veterinary treatment for them if that comes up?
Do you know the genetic lines of your rabbit? Before breeding, you really should take into consideration the ancestry of both the male and the female - are there any genetic defects in either line? What colors do they carry in their genes? In many animals, certain colors should NOT be bred together, they produce hich rates of birth defects.
If she is a pet rabbit that you got to be a pet rabbit - keep her that way. Spaying her will reduce her aggression and make it easier to introduce a new companion - male or female. When I was eleven, I spent several months doing chores for my neighbors and saving money to get all FIVE of my rabbits (two females and three males) neutered. It was one of the best things I have ever done. It's not a terribly expensive operation - you can find a way. :)

Ditto. I didn't mention it in my post, but the one time I DID breed a litter it was a miserable experience for me and mama bunny.

Rabbit breeding, like the breeding of any animals, isn't to be taken lightly. Vet bills are expensive, and there are many things that can go wrong. You risk your girl's life by breeding her. Is that a good way to treat a pet? Spayed and neutered rabbits are much calmer, cleaner, healthier, and better pets. Did you know that most unspayed rabbits will develop cancer? By spaying her, you'll ensure she lives a long, full life.
And about her attacking you... Rabbits are territorial animals. They don't like you invading their space. Try opening her cage door, and letting her come out on her own terms (put the cage on the ground first, if it's up high). And many rabbits don't like to be picked up - but they do love to be petted.
Make sure you rabbit proof your house first (or a room). The House Rabbit Society (http://www.rabbit.org/) has a wonderful website about all things rabbit. I suggest you check it out!

yes, you really need to spay your rabbit. another rabbit may make it worse. not trying to be a hypocrit, i have bred two litters. it is a fun expirence (sp?) but they are hard to sell and no more bunnies in this world is needed. I do have hollond lop CROSS bunnies if you want one. please dont chew me out because there crosses, whats done is done and i have learned my lesson. If you would like a bunny of mine you can have one. but two things-
1. you have to be within two hours of me. it is too much stress for a bunny to travel across the country.
2. You have to nueter the bunny if you want one. no breeding my rabbits!
good luck!

i don't think breeding is a good idea at all. What if you can't find the babys homes there are sooo many homeless animals aready. If you got her for a pet keep her as a pet both of you will be happier in the long run!But if you want to breed to some research find out how much vet bills cost if you don't have any money to get her fixed how are you going to feed the babys, get them vet checked, what if something goes wrong at birth?Think about long and hard.I don't know that much about rabbits but what i just posted can go for all animals
dab_20
11-07-2005, 03:29 PM
true. so where do you live?
crazy_caique
11-07-2005, 03:34 PM
dab_20 i wouldn't give her a rabbit how do you know she will have him/her fixed?
dab_20
11-07-2005, 03:46 PM
ummm isnt there a contract or something they can sign that tells me that they will get him fixed or they can get the rabbit takin away? thats what they do at humane societies.
dab_20
11-07-2005, 03:49 PM
ohh, and i do have experience with breeding rabbits and taking care of the babies. there is alot of sadness that goes with it and do NOT recommened breeding AT ALL. alot of time, money, and research goes along with that as well. unless you plan to breed for show, and know alot about it, please don't do it.
crazy_caique
11-07-2005, 04:27 PM
i 100 percent agree with dab_20 about breeding!I bet there is a contrat but i wonder if you have to get lawers involved??but wouldn't the damage already have been done by the time you took him back she could breed him with her rabbit before you found out if she didn't fix him
dab_20
11-07-2005, 04:30 PM
that would be weird if i had to get lawyers. lol we woulden't do that. this person doesnt even live in my area i bet anyways.

I highly doubt you need to get lawyers ;)

dab_20
11-07-2005, 06:59 PM
lol yep
and i know my rabbit cocoa will enjoy not having to have babies anymore. shes a good mamma and enjoys it, but i know she'll love just being a pet even more. she loves cheek rubs too. lol

Well i have done a lot of research and my dad also thinks that it is a good idea for me to let her breed. it may not be that great for you but i think that its a great idea....so i am sorry that none of you feel the same way that i do about this
crazy_caique
11-10-2005, 10:31 AM
I wish we could stop you but we can't.
My prayers are with your bunny
Jessika
11-10-2005, 11:54 AM
You don't have the money to get her fixed, yet somehow you will "magically" have money to breed her?? I only pray to God that nothing bad happens to these bunnies.
Cristy35
11-10-2005, 01:17 PM
well i hope that you dont pray to hard for my rabbit because i have done much research and i am not totally stupid about this...... although you know my dad is now offering to help me out....

11-10-2005, 01:43 PM
Then please explain to me how you can afford money for vet bills for the babies and the mom during her pregnancy when you can't afford to get her spayed?

I hear they have very realistic stuffed bunnies these days. They snuggle nicely and hardly take any money for care at all. Think about it.

11-10-2005, 03:16 PM
I will prayer for your rabbit very hard. :)
I hope she will be ok if you breed her. :(
I still don't think you should breed her.
does your bunny have a name?
I would like know so i can prayer for her by name. :)
dab_20
11-10-2005, 06:05 PM
i know you and i don't want her to breed, but you can't convince her not to anymore.
my thoughts are with you and your rabbit that the pregnancy goes well. and make sure you have homes for the bunnies before they are born.... any plan for the babies?? like showing, so you know they go to a good home?

11-13-2005, 01:38 PM
you know i wasnt even sure in the first place if i was gonna breed her or not you i was just thinking that it would be nice for her to have a friend that she could play with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dab_20
11-13-2005, 02:43 PM
Please don't be angry with us. If you are breeding her, all we want is a safe delivery, and hope all the bunnies go to a nice home. It's ok you want to get your bunny a new friend. Go ahead, but it doesn't mean you need to breed her.
Never ever give your bunnies away for free!! (unless you know the person really well) because some people will look in the newspaper or find someone with free rabbits and eat them, use them to train their dogs to kill rabbits, and other horrible things.
buttercup132
11-13-2005, 02:50 PM
i have earned some money and i could get her spayed but i am not
well then your NOT a good owner are you! you are be selfish and stupid!
and should not own a animal if all you think about is wat you want not your bunny!
you know i wasnt even sure in the first place if i was gonna breed her or not you i was just thinking that it would be nice for her to have a friend that she could play with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ya and if you get her a boy to play with then she definatly wont be happy cuz she'll be shooting out babies every month and thats not healthy that like being a back yard breeder and that gross and sick and just wrong!
It's ok you want to get your bunny a new friend. Go ahead, but it doesn't mean you need to breed her.
exactly and it dosent mean you have to make it a boy, especially if it is a deiiferent breed then her it will extra hard to find homes for the babies and also find homes that know about bunnies ect your being very stupid and ignorant right now and not thinking about how your poor bunny is gonne feel...stupid juts stupid...

well how do you know that i am just fourteen and there isnt anything that makes me more mad than someone calling me stupid especially when they dont even know me........anywayz just because i love my rabbit and have thought some things over dosent mean that i want to torture her.........you know i have always wanted some baby bunnies and i might even keep some for myself.......i can always get her spayed after the first little.........you i dont even care because people just get to over excited about these things.....but i understand that some of you think that other things are better but i used to have a bunny and she had babies and it was actually quiet exciting....so
crazy_caique
11-14-2005, 04:25 PM
so you have already had a rabbit have babies?
Cristy35
11-14-2005, 04:33 PM
yes actually i have......she was a beautiful rabbit and i loved her dearly.....things happened and i had to move so i had to give her away.....although she was a very happy bunny..... i just couldnt let her travel that far
crazy_caique
11-14-2005, 04:36 PM

yes i know ......... but like i said i didnt even know in the first place if i was gonna let her have babies
buttercup132
11-14-2005, 04:44 PM
well if you plan on keeping ALL the babies then it makes the situation better but instead of making your bunny have babies why dont you go to your shelter and find some babies or a pregnant mother that is due...it would be better and it would make you feel better aswell and if you want you can keep some babies as a frend for your bunny, but i hope you know not to put the babies near another rabbit or have another rabbit in the cage when the babbiies are born

that actually a great idea "but it almost sound like you want the babies for a thing to watch" or the joy of birth. It really is a sad situation but I think you need to do alot more reserch find a perfect boy bunny, because on you first post, of this topic you were looking for any old kind of bunny  Plus the male might be mean because he might be territorial. Wow, Buttercup, you are a HUGE hypocrite. When we were trying to explain to another pet talker about keeping her dog chained 24/7, you were there telling people not to argue, and defending someone who was/is wrong. I don't see the difference in this case, except you are calling this person stupid and selfish. Give your head a shake. Like Poofy just said, arguing only makes it worse.
