Hey, all! I don't usually post over here, but, I met some beautiful animals today, and, thought I'd share the photos with you. My step brother dressed up as a character from The Lord of the Rings for Halloween and wanted to have his photo taken on the back of a Shire horse. He's a police officer and they keep several of their mounts at this farm about twenty minutes from my house. I went with him to take the photos. It was awesome! Check out dog general if you wanna see the adorable puppy that was there, too! Here's the link...farm puppy (http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?p=1310479#post1310479)

Harvey and Shiloh...I couldn't get many of them because Trouble kept coming over to me, and, they wouldn't while he was there. :)

Windchime, the burrow. This little man is over forty years old and the farm is named after him. :) He was sweet, and, noisy!

And, last but not least...Beorn. He's over 2600 pounds and stands over 18 hands at the withers, he was beautiful! My step brother is tall, so, the photo of me in the saddle was taken after Allen had been on. So, the stirrups were nowhere near my feet!

Isn't Beorn magnificent?! He ate some apples out of my hand and spit all over my shirt in the process. :) It was funny...and, nasty! The two guys that were there invited me to go riding with them sometime soon. I hope I get to go! :) And, Windchime is adorable! And, so tiny! I need to see if I got one where you can see how small he is in comparison to the horses. :)

I want a little donkey!!!
My neighbors had a donkey and a few horses, the donkey always wanted to play and frolick with the horses, but they just used to ignore him. So when i go home, I always launch some carrots to him.

They said that Shiloh is sorrel. Red roan is a color, not a breed, right? I'm not that educated on horses, sorry. But, I did ask her color. And, they said sorrel, which I have heard of before...and, she's a quarter horse. As far as I could tell, Harvey was just really dark brown or black. But, I'll ask them again when I see them next week (hopefully!). He's a thoroughbred. And, trouble is a quarter horse.
Yeah, those Shires are really big horses, I love how they lower their heads so that they can be haltered...if he put his head up, it'd be over 8 feet up! :)

Aw, that's sweet of you to wanna see him! :) I actually didn't get any pictures of him with my camera. He wanted me to get photos with his two cameras, so, I was busy snapping away with those two when he was around. Actually, hold on! I do have one photo of him walking in front of me, but, behind Beorn. So, you don't see the front of his outfit...but, it's still cool! I'll post it in just a moment! :)

Here's my step brother, Allen, walking towards Beorn. He wanted a spot that didn't show any modern things...telephone polls, etc...so, we walked for a few feet to a good spot. I was bringing up the rear. :)

Ok, this is a learning experience for me. :) I went to the online dictionary and looked up sorrel. Shiloh's definitely that. :D Then, I looked up roan, and, it said chestnut, bay, or sorrel coat thickly sprinkled with white or grey. None of the horses had that...is that what you were meaning by roan? Like I said earlier, I don't know horses all that well, although I'd like to. :)
Gasp!!! Beorn is just magnificent!!
Thanks for sharing - even the butt shots! :D

Thanks for the photos! She's definitely not a red roan, she has no white at all in her coat. Except for some on her feet (socks, maybe?). But, there's no white flecking through her coat at all. Of the three you posted, she's more chestnut...but, again, he called her sorrel, and, sorrel, according the the dictionary means "A brownish orange to light brown", so I guess chestnut and sorrel mean about the same thing. :)

This is what one of the girls that I show horses with horse looks like (red roan):

I'd have to say that Blue or Red roans are my favorite COLOR of horse. But dont ask me to chose between a Blue and a Red that would be almost impostible :o ;)

I don't know the answer to either of those questions, actually. :o I don't know who Beorn was named after (actually, I thought it was supposed to be spelled Bjorn when I heard his name pronounced, but, I saw his stall plaque). And, as for my step brother, I want to say Boromir, but, I can't be for sure. I'll ask him next time I talk to him!

Here's a front view of Allen, on Beorn. :) It's hard to tell, but, he's actually got a full chain mail shirt on under the suede vest thing. And, that sword is ten pounds of stainless steel. He's got an actual machete on his other hip. He really went all out, it was awesome!

Shilo looks like a red roan in the picture. But if you say he has no white flecks in him he might be a sorrel. Here is a pic of a sorrel since nobody has posted one. *my horsey*

Yeah, here's a closer photo of Shiloh. Definitely no white in her coat...I think she has some white socks...but, other than that...she's all the same color all over. She's not as bright as your horse, though. She's really dusty, must've been rollin' in the dirt! :D

does look alot like a red roan...I am very educated in horses, even if it gives a slight sorrel color, it could still be red roan. If it is darker at it's head and rear and legs and lighter on it's back and stomach and fades into the legs and rear and head, so it looks like a roan, though it could be a strawberry roan... http://www.western-saddle-horse-tack-for-sale.com/images/gracie6041_edited.jpg
Blue Roan:
http://www.powderriverhorses.com/Essie%20Mae%20Hanock.jpg
Blue roan gies the impression that the color is Blue, but it is actually a light grey and dark grey, no more, no less...light greay in the middle and dark grey on the head and legs. Sometimes with red or strawberry roan it is simply a variety of colors, like the strawberry roan is only a dark and a light sorrel...and it makes it look like a strawberry red

But, isn't there white in a roan? Geez, I'm only going by what y'all are showing me and what I saw...she looked nothing like that, her coat was the same color all over, just dusty. And, she had definite white socks, no fading at all. And, the other horse was dark, but, not grey anywhere...blech. I'm not trying to be a pain, but, I just don't see what y'all are seeing...unless what I read is not what roan is. But, every photo I've seen (the ones y'all have shown me and the ones I've found on my own) show roans as having white intermixed with the other color....

No, in the second picture you can definently see that she is NOT a red roan. She is definently a Chestnut. I am very educated in horse too, and I now for sure that she is a Chestnut, so Kari, we have to give YOU the credit, you were right all along! ;) :p
-edit- Her mane and tail arent black though are they? Because then she would be a bay :p. See, this horse stuff is complicated

Well, it wasn't so much about me being right...it was more about me making sure i understood what the crap a roan was. ha ha. But, no her mane and tail are basically the same light reddish/brown as her coat. I called her a bay when I first saw her and he said she was actually more of a sorrel. :) I think chestnut and sorrel can basically be just about the same thing, right? And, yeah, one thing I did know...was how complicated the color thing is. :)

Well, whatever, and it doesn't necessarily mean if there is a black tail it's a bay cause i have rode a horse *Trained by a professional breeder and trainer* and she said it doesn't matter if the horse is chestnut and haas a black mane and tail, it's still chestnut, and it's only bay if it's a DARK brown

No matter what color brown (except a buckskin or dun), if the horse has a black mane, tail, and black points (black legs fading to brown and black muzzle fading to brown) it is a bay.

This site is amazing. And, wildly confusing! Ha ha, there are so many things that go into determing the colors. Wow. Anyway, I thought with the interesting little debate going on in this otherwise undebatable thread, I might just post this link. I've been reading a lot of the stuff about chestnut and sorrel (they are the same, which is kinda what I thought), and, started reading about the modifiers and all that other stuff. Just thought I'd specifically share the page about "bay", but, the other pages are interesting too if anyone wants to check them out. Cool stuff. :)
