Hi.
I haven't been here in awhile. Seems like I only come on here when there's problems.
There's a problem.
As I talked about here a few months ago, Brutus has been peeing where he shouldn't pee - on the stove, on the entertainment center, on the OUTSIDE of litter boxes, on our keepsakes chest. You get the picture.
We have increased the number of litterboxes to 12- one for each cat.
we've had uti ruled out by our vet.
The trouble started when we started taking in feral cats that we trapped in our garage- about 1 1/2 yrs ago.
We went from 5 to twelve cats since then, plus gave away a dozen kittens from feral mama's- gave them to interested people & some to shelters.
We had his name on waiting lists at 2 shelters.
We could have taken him to one saturday, but decided we'd wait until our last two kittens (one male, one female) are fixed to see if that would make a difference.
I came home from work an hour ago & my wife told me that Brutus had peed all over a cat bed.
My wife is at the end of her rope.
She thinks the best thing to do would be to put him down.
She says that if we take him to a shelter & he gets adopted & if he starts doing it at his new humans home, they might not be so understanding & would maybe harm or kill him. That is a valid concern, & to be honest with pet talk, when I called to put Brutus, I was NOT honest with the shelters about why we need to surrender him. I thought if I was honest, his chances of adoption were nil. In my own defense, I've read on the internet that if a cat is doing this because of too many cats in a household (which is almost certainly the case here) The behavior will MOST LIKELY stop if they go to a new home with one or no other cats. That is why I lied to the shelters. I told them he was depressed & lethargic since the other cats came to be with us, & that he's probaly like to be an only cat.
I CANNOT allow him to be "put down"
I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
If he was ill or injured beyond help, then yes.
Not because of a behavior problem.
It's a territorial thing, right?
What can we do?
He is SUCH an AWESOME cat. This just sucks.
In my mind, WE have let HIM down by having too many cats.
I could go on & on & on.
If anyone knows anyone who would be willing to take a chance, I will hand deliver him anywhere in north america & pay for shipping anywhere else, plus I'd be willing to send the adoptive parents 15-20$ per week for his food & litter.
He is a grey tabby, 5 yrs old. nuetered & front declawed. He is sooooo full of personality. He is my good boy & I hate to have to part with him, but I don't see any other way.

The only thing I can think of is to keep this guy in a separate area and maybe give him some medication, prescribed by the doctor.

I just know that other folks will have good ideas for you. It seems such a shame to put him down. There must be some little old lady looking for a cat to keep her company. Try to find him a new home! Is that possible?

Help needed here, everyone!

Good luck. Don't get rid of this poor guy. He sounds like a wonderful cat.

I wish I could take Brutus but I am full up and not sure how we will make it through the winter as it is... but please contact Cats International. The hotline phone number is 262 375 8852. This is an organization founded by a woman I am acquainted with who is very dedicated to cats and specializes in "potty" problems. This group might be able to help you find a placement for him.

If you have any choice at all, please don't put him down. He will probably be ok someplace else. You are doing your best.

Good luck.

Hi.
Thank you both for your replys.
I agree. Brutus would be an awesome cat for an older person.I'm so sorry to him for making this house...welll... just too full of cats. Barncat, I did go to the cats international website this morning just to read, & they seem to know what they're talking about. I will call that number this weekend. I wish I thought that Brutus could continue living here, but it sounds like in order for that to happen, we would have to get rid of absolutely every scent of where he's marked. I honestly believe that in order to do that, we would have to move.
He's a sweet kitty. A headbutter.
