Recently my sister's 7 year old golden retriever, Skylee, has had blood in her urine. They took her to the vet and the vet said it was either kidney stones, urinary infection, or possibly a tumor. I think they gave her antibiotics to try first to see if it would clear up if it was a urinary infection. I haven't heard if that cleared it up or not.

My questions are is there anything else besides those that would cause blood in the urine? Also she is feeding Skylee really bad dog food (in my opinion)....Kibbles n' bits. She said she won't eat any other kind of dog food. I was wondering if there's something in the dog food that could cause a urinary infection or kidney stones?

And another urine related question. :o Nebo has always been very well potty trained, but he has peed in the house 3 times in the last month which is so unlike him. Every time it has been after or during a visit from his dog friend, Cisco. It's not a territorial thing (and he is neutered), he's not lifting his leg or anything. I think it's because when Cisco is over they run and run like crazy then drink a TON of water afterward. Two of the times he didn't actually stop to pee it just dribbled out as he was running down the stairs to the back door. I understand if he just couldn't hold it any longer and I didn't get mad at him, it just seems odd to me it would happen 3 times like that and well I'm paranoid and worry about everything. :o Has anyone else had this happen with their dog?

Blood in the urine sounds like a urinary infection. It really good be anything-I'm not too sure if Kibbles n Bits would cause that. I knew a dog on Gravy Train his whole life and he's still kickin at 17 with no problems other than being blind and somewhat arthritic. If the dog's straining to pee, if very well may be kidney stones-it's very heartbreaking to see. :(

How old is Nebo? It could just be he couldnt hold it. Maybe some slight bladder weakness. At least he was trying to get outside. If it continues, or worsens or anything you might want to talk to your vet.

The blood in the urine does seem like it caused by a UTI, stones or bladder infection. Did the vet take a urine sample???

I personally think that some foods can cause problems like that.

Years ago Raustyk was on purina pro plan when it first came out. It was a pretty decent food back then, Nutro was just barely emerging, innova and the like were not even available yet. For 3-4 years straight she would get UTI's literally one right after the other. About a week off antibiotics she'd get another one. She had other problems too, like her ears would get dirty very fast, I'd have to clean them out every 3 days or so otherwise an infection would start, she had a weird rash on her belly that wouldn't go away and her anal glands needed to be expressed every 1-2 weeks otherwise they would become impacted/infected. We did allergy tests, blood tests the whole nine, couldn't come up with anything.
I started to learn about better fodds that were coming out, nutro, innova, etc... and changed her diet to Nutro natural choice for large breeds because it was a better food. Within one week almost all of her problems dissapeared, within 3 weekd everythign was gone! A few years ago I ran out of dog food and was unable to get to the store so my mom went for me, picked up a small bag of proplan, sure enough her problems started to come back after only 2 days on it, then about a year ago again my mom went to the store and picked up a small bag of maximum nutrition from walmart and with 2-3 days a UTI appeared again. Come to find out the ingredient are VERY close to pro plan.

About 2 years ago I was speaking to a Nutro representative at a pet store & we were talking about the product, I told my story that I told above and she said that that was funny, she just had a customer come in w/ a toy poodle that had the UTI's on pro plan & purina one for years & went away within a couple weeks of being on Nutro. This got me wondering so I decided to a study on it.
Now purina one & pro plan are almost the same diet, there are only like 2 ingredients that are different and the shape of the kibble is slightly different.

So I went to the local vets office & a local pet store for 2 days each and out of about 400 dog owners, about 90 or so fed pro plan or one, and out of those about 45 all had one or more symptoms that were similar to Raustyk's. Out of those 45, 30 all had UTI's and out of those 30 about 25 switched foods (not that they knew about the food, just because they discovered better foods) and they ALL had all of their symptoms dissapear within a few weeks on a new food. (the numbers are close but not exact I don't have the actual paperwork with me but I have a good memory on this subject).

Sorry to make that a long story. lol

How much time laps between the time he slurps up water & goes potty in thge house? Does he go into a deep sleep after he drinks water but before he has an accident?

I would say he just couldn't hold it because as you said it just sort of leaked out while he was walking, not like he stopped & peed or marked his territory by lifting his leg. It could be that he over did himself and drank too much or it could be the start of a weak bladder.
I'd say to keep a close eye on him. After a big day maybe let him have a small amount of water but offer it frequently. Make sure to let him out shortly after. If it continues then I'd make a trip to the vet.

I am not too sure about the blood in urine. I just hope Sklee is ok.

About Nebo peeing, could it be from excitment? I know when Bo is really hyped up he dribbles when he runs. It has happened less and less, but maybe that is the reason?

Thanks for the replies.

The info about proplan is very interesting, Lv4dogs (glad Raustyk's problems are gone now!). Do you have any theory to what ingredient in proplan could be the problem?

Nebo is 3 years old. I don't think it's excitable peeing, he's never peed when excited, being submissive, or anything like that, I think he just couldn't hold it. There was a bit of time the last time it happened (couple of days ago) where they were both laying around in my room for a while after they had just ran around and drank lots of water. The first time it was about an hour after they had been at the pet fair and running/playing in the water, second time I wasn't home at the time (Cisco had just been over, we left to take him home and go somewhere) but my mom said she had all 3 dogs locked upstairs because company was over  and when she let them out Nebo dribbled on his way running down the stairs. I think next time Cisco comes over I'll just let Nebo drink a little bit at a time and see if it happens again. I hope he doesn't have a weak bladder or anything like that. :( He doesn't go during the night, in his crate while I'm at work, etc.
